Youths must show patriotism in daily life: YB

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: Norazlinah signing the KMJG 2025 record book. KUNAK: Young people must play their part in showing love and loyalty to the country, said Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif. She said youths should fulfil their responsibilities as Malaysians by demonstrating patriotism in their daily lives. 'My call is especially to the youths in Kunak, Sabah and throughout Malaysia — let us fulfil our responsibilities as citizens. Despite whatever polemics may arise, we must first prove our commitment to the nation. Before voicing too many negative views, it is far more important to set a good example, and that example must come from within ourselves. Let us prove our love and patriotism for our country,' she said after officiating the Kunak District-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 programme. Norazlinah said youths should not be excluded from nurturing a love for the nation. She commended Kunak's youth for winning first and second place in the National Storytelling competition organised by the Malaysia Information Department (JaPen). 'This shows that young people are no exception in having love for the country. I believe competitions and activities like these can inspire greater patriotism among our youths,' she said. The KMJG 2025 convoy, led by Sabah JaPen Director Jainisah Mohd Noor, arrived at the Kunak Youth Arena Hall after a 10-day journey covering 37 stops. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 187,652 individuals with debts get second chance

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 187,652 individuals with debts not exceeding RM200,000 have been freed from a life of bankruptcy from March 2023 until June 2025 as part of the government's Second Chance Policy, says M. Kulasegaran. The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said this included young adults under the age of 40. 'This achievement is proof of the government's push to implement reforms that deliver direct impact to the people. 'Through this effort, we have not just freed the people from the burden of debt, we have also helped to restore their self-worth, giving them a new chapter in life,' he said during the Ministry Question Time in Parliament yesterday. Kulasegaran said the government hopes this move will serve as a fresh start for Malaysians to move forward in their daily lives. 'It aims to provide a second chance to those in the early and mid stages of their careers, who are important assets to the nation, so they can recover and actively contribute again to the family and national economy,' he added.

2026 Budget: East-West Highway upgrades a priority for Works Ministry

KUALA KANGSAR: The East-West Highway (JRTB), particularly the Gerik-Jeli stretch, is among the key priorities for the Works Ministry under the upcoming 2026 Budget, said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He said the ministry has submitted a request for funding to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation will depend on the government's final decision. "It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the JRTB," he told reporters after the official opening of the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong today. Earlier, the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially inaugurated the bridge. Also present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, as well as Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He said the JRTB's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history. Data collected via the app, he noted, has already supported federal funding requests, leading to repair and upgrade works along the JRTB and other federal roads in Perak. – Bernama
