Prisoners celebrate Independence Day in Karachi
Jail Superintendent Abdul Karim Abbasi and other officials attended various events that have been organised. Quran recitation ceremonies were held, accompanied by prayers for the country's progress. Sports competitions are also being arranged inside the jail as part of the celebrations.
Over the decades, as part of the ongoing jail reforms, the provincial governments in the country are focused on making the prisons reformatories. 'Hate crime not the criminal,' is written in bold letters at the entrance of the Karachi Central Jail as well as other penitentiaries of Sindh.
Besides conducting schools and skills classes for the prisoners, the jail administrations celebrate national days and religious festival in grand manner to bring some light to the otherwise dreary routine of the jailhouse.
Apart from the ongoing Independence Day celebrations at the Karachi Central Jail, Defence Day and Pakistan Day are celebrated with national fervour. Similarly, Eidul Fitr, Eidul Azha and Miladun Nabi are celebrated behind bars with solemnity and festive mood.
On all these occasions, special meals like biryani, qorma and kheer are cooked for the inmates.

In one message sent after the killings, Adeeba wrote: 'Now you must be happy, do you see what I have done because of you?' The conversations reveal routine discussions in the hours leading up to the incident. At Adeeba's request, Ghufran had bought Independence Day clothes for the children. Messages also show her asking about their preparations: 'Does Zarrar have a shalwar kameez for tomorrow?' and 'Tell Sameeha what to wear tomorrow.' Adeeba also wrote, 'Sameeha has prepared for tomorrow, she also has flags with her.' Ghufran replied with photos of the children dressed for the celebrations, to which Adeeba responded, 'Mashallah, when did they get ready? Where is Zarrar's cap?' Later, she asked her ex-husband whether the children had sought permission to stay the night, to which Ghufran responded with a smile emoji and said yes. A day earlier, the police arrested Adeeba and recovered the sharp object she used to slit her children's throats. According to authorities, she had a history of mental illness and frequent seizures, which led to her divorce last year. The court had granted custody of the children to their father, Ghufran, who would occasionally send them to visit their mother. On the day of the incident, the children were staying with Adeeba when she allegedly suffered a seizure and, in a state of mental imbalance, attacked them in the bathroom. The victims were identified as 4.5-year-old Sameeha and seven-year-old Zarrar. Police said Adeeba called her ex-husband to confess to the killings. The father and the children's uncle then alerted police through the emergency helpline. Officers arrived at the scene, recovered the bodies, and shifted them to Jinnah Hospital for legal proceedings.
