Dulux Paints takes court action over Cork site

The site, which straddles the River Bride near the Commons Road in Blackpool on the northside of the city, had been used to manufacture paint for 140 years before Dulux closed it down at the end of last year.
Dulux Ireland has now filed in the High Court a special summons, which is normally a fast-track procedure that can be used to resolve questions around deeds or the administration of trusts.
Simon Colvan, head of communications UK and Ireland, for Akzonobel — the Dutch company that owns the Dulux paint brand — said in response to queries that the action was 'a relatively routine administrative process'.
'The case relates to our site in Cork and aims to resolve a historical ownership issue around part of the site. We're taking the necessary legal steps to ensure property records are accurate and up to date,' he said.
Colvan did not respond when asked whether the legal move was necessary as part of a potential plan to sell the site by the firm.
In May last year, Dulux announced it was shutting the paint manufacturing business on the Commons Road with the loss of 45 jobs. Most manufacturing of Dulux paint was moved to existing UK facilities. The news was a blow to the area and there were calls at the time for the site to be redeveloped.
Reports at the time said although more than €2m was invested in an upgrade of the plant in 2010, that modernisation was needed and a new facility would have been required to retain production at the site.
In 2019 the firm pleaded guilty after it was prosecuted by the Environmental Protection Agency for a breach of its Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Licence.
A spokesman said 'the department has not received any papers in relation to any case involving Dulux Ireland. As such we cannot offer any comment.'

Nato to deliver more military aid to Ukraine after Dutch minister announces deal

Nato has started coordinating regular deliveries of large weapons packages to Ukraine after the Netherlands said it would provide air defence equipment, ammunition and other military aid worth 500 million euros (£434m). The equipment that will be provided is based on Ukraine's priority needs on the battlefield. Nato allies then locate the weapons and ammunition and send them on. 'Packages will be prepared rapidly and issued on a regular basis,' a Nato spokesperson said. Air defence systems are in greatest need, as the United Nations said that Russia's relentless pounding of urban areas behind the front line has killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians. American air defence systems and munitions, in particular, are crucial for Ukraine to defend itself Russia's bigger army is also making slow but costly progress along the 620-mile front line. Currently, it is waging an operation to take the eastern city of Pokrovsk, a logistical hub whose fall could allow it to drive deeper into Ukraine. European allies and Canada are buying most of the equipment which they plan to send from the United States, which has greater stocks of military material, as well as more effective weapons. The Trump administration is not giving any arms to Ukraine. The new deliveries will come on top of other pledges of military equipment. The Kiel Institute, which tracks support to Ukraine, estimates that as of June, European countries had provided 72 billion euros (£63bn) worth of military aid since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, compared to 65 billion dollars (£49bn) in US aid. Dutch defence minister Ruben Brekelmans said that 'American air defence systems and munitions, in particular, are crucial for Ukraine to defend itself'. Announcing the deliveries on Monday, he said Russia's attacks are 'pure terror, intended to break Ukraine'. Germany said on Friday that it will deliver two more Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine in the coming days. It agreed to the move after securing assurances that the US will prioritise the delivery of new Patriots to Germany to backfill its stocks. These weapon systems are only made in the US.

Conor McGregor adds €17,500 red wine to Black Forge menu

McGregor charges €6.50 for a pint of Guinness in his pub, compared to his own-brand Forged Irish Stout's €6 price point Conor with Stephanie Simons in the Black Forge with two bottle of Petrus worth €35k Conor McGregor has been whining this weekend about losing his appeal case against Nikita Hand but he also enjoys a wine of a different nature — which is undoubtedly the most expensive served in an Irish pub. The MMA star has on his drinks menu at his Black Forge pub a bottle of Petrus 2005 red wine for an astonishing €17,500. Other bottles of red wine are in the more affordable bracket for most punters, ranging in price from €32 to a still pricey €690, while the cheapest bottle of white is €32. A rosé starts at €36, while bottles of champagne range from €150 to €780. McGregor charges €6.50 for a pint of Guinness in his pub, compared to his own-brand Forged Irish Stout's €6 price point. Most lagers in the pub are priced at €7.30. The Black Forge wine list 'I was taken aback at how someone going to a pub in a working class area like Crumlin would be even thinking about spending nearly twenty grand on a bottle of wine,' remarked one person in the pub, who highlighted the startling price on the menu. 'I was told that of course no one from Crumlin or Drimnagh would spend €17,500 for a bottle of wine, but that it is 'Conor's favourite', and he drinks it from time to time when he's in the pub.' It's unclear whether McGregor actually puts the huge cost of the French wine on his bill, but he would still be hit deep in the pockets either way. That's because online wholesale prices for that same bottle of wine show that it's fetching around €5,600 on the open market, leading to a profit of just over €12,000 if any customer decided to fork out for it in the Black Forge. The 2005 Petrus on the Black Forge wine list for €17.5K . 'Petrus is often considered the pinnacle of the Pomerol appellation and is undoubtedly one of the most revered wines in the world,' says one expert. 'The 2005 Petrus is dazzling. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2005 possesses magnificent density from start to finish.' McGregor is currently on holiday with his family on his yacht in the Mediterranean. On Friday he issued a rambling statement after Nikita Hand's latest victory, in which he vowed he would not be paying his pal James Lawrence's legal costs after the High Court threw out both of their appeals. Conor with Stephanie Simons in the Black Forge with two bottle of Petrus worth €35k McGregor had tried to challenge the outcome of a civil rape case Nikita Hand won against him last year when a jury found he had assaulted her in a Dublin hotel in 2018 and awarded her almost €250,000 in damages. McGregor had asked the Court of Appeal to allow in new claims that Ms Hand was punched and kicked by her then partner just hours after she says she was raped by McGregor in 2018. However, the allegations, made by Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins, former neighbours of Ms Hand, were dramatically withdrawn by McGregor's legal team on the morning the case opened in July. Nikita Hand slammed the allegations as 'lies' and is now suing both the couple and McGregor for damages, claiming they had been involved in 'malicious abuse' of the processes of the Court of Appeal.
