Pittsburgh Regional Transit painting new bus lanes across Downtown Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Regional Transit is painting several streets red across Downtown Pittsburgh as part of the University Line bus rapid transit project.
Ask PRT bus riders, and many will say that getting from point A to point B on certain routes can be a test of patience.
"(I'm) late for appointments because of traffic backups and block-ups and whatnot. I've been through that," said Pittsburgh resident Melvin Bradford.
"The hard part is getting into town and getting out of town," Steve Small of McKeesport said.
And that's exactly why PRT is painting at least some of its black tops red.
"Keeping people on the bus moving faster and making us more reliable," said Amy Silberman of PRT.
These new red lanes are for buses and emergency vehicles only; the exception is the striped parts in turning lanes.
The lanes on Fifth Avenue to Grant Street on Liberty Avenue are done. Sixth Avenue from Grant Street to Center Avenue is almost complete. Sixth Avenue from Wood Street to Grant is also almost finished.
On Wednesday night, crews are going to be finishing up the section from Wood to Grant, but more painting needs to be done.
"Next week, we're going to have work on Fifth Avenue, so ultimately, it will be Fifth Avenue to here on Liberty Avenue to Sixth Avenue that will be the full Downtown loop," Silberman said.
What routes will use the red lanes?
"That's the 61A, 61B, 61C, and 71B," Silberman said.
Will it work? The consensus carries cautious optimism.
It's a good concept, but I don't know if it's going to work. Let's hope. Let's keep our fingers crossed," said Jason Key of the Hill District.

Delaware train derailment blocks road in Bear, New Castle County, police say
A train derailed Friday morning in Bear, Delaware, according to state police. Police said this was a Norfolk Southern train. Images from Chopper 3 showed multiple tanker cars leaning off the tracks. The cars were hauling petroleum crude oil. No spills or leaks occurred as a result of the derailment, state police said. The derailment occurred at Old Porter Road and the stopped train is blocking the roadway. It's not clear what caused the train to leave the tracks or if anyone was injured. This is a developing story and will be updated.

2026 Tesla Model S Plaid Costs $5,000 More and Is 50 MPH Slower

Tesla announced late Thursday that its latest refresh of the Model S and X, its two oldest vehicles dating back to 2012 and 2015, respectively, is now available in the U.S. Given the age of both cars, you'd imagine the company would have numerous opportunities to punch them up. Instead, they're roundly $5,000 more expensive across the board, and the Model S Plaid in particular has had its top speed reduced by 50 mph. What? This evolution of Tesla's flagships has been a long time coming, and in some small ways, it is an improvement. Exterior styling has been slightly tweaked; wind and road noise have been reduced alongside an enhancement to the company's Active Noise Cancelation tech; updated suspension should deliver a smoother ride; and there's now 'dynamic' lighting in the cabin, for the people into that sort of thing. The Model X, in particular, now offers 2.5 cubic feet more room for third-row passengers and/or cargo. Tesla's also quoting a range improvement on the Model S Long Range, though you'd probably be hard pressed to notice it in normal driving. The sedan can now travel five miles further than before, up to 410 miles. Meanwhile, three out of four Lucid Air trim levels still perform better, especially the Grand Touring spec with its astonishing 512-mile range. The S Plaid can also now go up to 368 miles on a full charge, an increase of 20 miles. The battery architecture in both the S and X is still 400 volts. Tesla But it's the more performance-minded tweaks to the Plaid versions of both cars that are the hardest to take. The $107,800 Model S Plaid now tops out at 149 mph, when its predecessor maxed out at 200 mph. It's also 26 pounds heavier than it used to be, though, in fairness, that's nothing compared to the weight the Model X Plaid has put on. The SUV is 186 pounds heavier than before, for a total of 5,434 pounds. At least it got to keep its 163-mph top speed. While Tesla seems insistent on not replacing its most expensive vehicles with true next-generation successors, it's still got to make them competitive. This just isn't it. Rivals have not only caught up but flown past in recent years, and while the new S and X are slightly better in the details, a $5,000 hike for incrementally better NVH, a few more miles of range, and a couple extra feet of legroom don't go far enough. Tesla raises prices on new Model S and X vehicles in the U.S.
Tesla on Friday announced it's launching new versions of its Model S and Model X vehicles in the U.S., with new price tags to match. The electric-vehicle maker said the upgraded cars, which it's rolling out Friday, come with a number of enhancements, including better battery range, improved aerodynamics, aesthetic upgrades and more. Buyers will have to fork over an extra $5,000 for the new features, according to the carmaker's website. The Model S now starts at $84,990, while the Model X starts at $89,990. In a post on X, Tesla touted new features to allay one of electric vehicles owners' biggest concerns: range anxiety, or the fear that they won't make it to a charging stations before their car's battery runs out. Tesla said that its Model S Long Range gives drivers up to 410 miles of range, with new wheel designs and a more aerodynamic car body that add more mileage. Other improvements to the vehicles include new suspension design for a smoother ride, more space for third-row passengers and cargo for Model X vehicles. The new cars also feature improved interior noise cancellation for a quieter driving experience. Tesla stock plunged this year, driven down by CEO Elon Musk's leading role in the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, earlier this year, followed by a subsequent public spat with President Trump. Some Tesla owners who were once fans of the electric cars' cutting edge design are also rethinking their purchases and say they want to sell their vehicles to distance themselves from Musk's polarizing public persona.
