Dublin appoint Ger Brennan as senior football manager

Irish Examiner7 hours ago
Three months after leading Louth to their first Leinster SFC title in 68 years, Ger Brennan has been appointed as the new Dublin senior football manager.
The St Vincent's man, who left the Louth role in early July after two years in charge, has been given a three-year term.
He replaces Dessie Farrell who stepped down after six seasons in charge following June's All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Tyrone. Brennan's management team will be confirmed at a later date.
Brennan won two All-Ireland senior medals as a player – 2011 and '13 – before retiring from the inter-county game in 2015. He captained St Vincent's to an All-Ireland senior club title in 2014 and had been part of the team that won the 2008 crown.
Confirming the news, Dublin chairman Ken O'Sullivan said: 'Ger has achieved the highest honours as a player with Dublin and he has our full support in leading the Dublin Senior Football panel in pursuit of further honours in the coming years. We wish Ger, his team and the panel the very best and look forward to the 2026 season'.
Brennan is the first man to manage Dublin having previously taken charge of another county team since Tommy Lyons in 2001 – Mayo native Lyons had guided Offaly to a provincial senior champions in 1998.
Brennan is the Gaelic games executive in UCD where he succeeded his late club-mate, Dublin great Brian Mullins. He follows fellow St Vincent's men Pat Gilroy and Kevin Heffernan in taking the reins.

Derry City held by Cork City at Brandywell to damage European ambitions

League of Ireland Premier Division: Derry City 0 Cork City 0 Derry City 's European ambitions suffered a major blow as bottom of the table Cork City held Tiernan Lynch's team to a frustrating scoreless draw at Brandywell on Friday night. The Leesiders were good value for the draw, Ger Nash's men producing a superb defensive display which limited Lynch's team to only a handful of half chances on a night which could cost Derry dear as the season reaches its business end. You had to go back to November 2024, when Shelbourne's 1-0 victory secured the Premier Division title, for the last time Derry failed to score in a league match at the Brandywell. Indeed the Candy Stripes had beaten Cork in their last eight meetings between the teams but there was little sign of that superiority this time. Boos from the home support at the full-time whistle summed up the mood after a result which means Derry have taken only two points from the last 12, a run which has put a league challenge out of sight and left the Candy Stripes looking over their shoulder anxiously in the race for Europe. The Candystripes made two changes from the side who lost to Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght, Gavin White and Hayden Cann coming in for recently signing Dip Akinyemi and the suspended Alex Bannon. READ MORE Ger Nash, meanwhile, made one alteration to the Cork City side who defeated Galway to claim a massive three points last time out, Freddie Anderson named in place of Rio Shipston. Derry's previous home fixture against Bohemians was marred by trouble off the field but Derry trouble this was time on the pitch as they struggled to create a chance of note against the bottom of the table Leesiders. The home side saw plenty of the ball but neither keeper was stretched in a first half of little goalmouth action. Seani Maguire sent a shot well over with one of Cork's few foray's into the home half while Sadou Diallo and Michael Duffy were similarly wayward for Europe chasing Derry. Derry did have halfhearted penalty appeals waved away 20 minutes in when Adam O'Reilly went down as he tried to go past Cork's Matthew Kiernan while a Liam Boyce header and Duffy's low shot did eventually bring Conor Brann in action but few inside Brandywell were surprised when the half-time sounded with both clean sheets still intact. A delightful piece of Duffy skill out under the Southend Park stand did briefly rouse the home support upon the restart but there was no immediate second-half improvement from either side, though Cork's threat on the break was growing. Lynch's response was the 54th-minute introduction of summer signing Dip Akinyemi, with Danny Mullen and Ben Doherty, making only his 11th appearance of an injury-ravaged season, following from the bench soon after but little changed in terms of the home side's frustrations. Doherty fired one effort over the bar but if anything Cork, with only three league wins to their credit all season before kick-off, were looking the more likely on the counter as Derry struggled to make any inroads against a well organised, disciplined Cork rearguard. More than six minutes of injury-time offered brief hope but the home fans reaction on the whistle told you everything about a match that won't live long in the memory. Derry City: Brian Maher, Adam O'Reilly, Hayden Cann, Mark Connolly, Jamie Stott, Brandon Fleming (Ben Doherty, 62 mins); Sadou Diallo (Ronan Boyce, 72 mins), Carl Winchester, Michael Duffy, Gavin Whyte (Danny Mullen, 62min62 minsam Boyce (Dipo Akinyemi, 54 mins). Cork City: Conor Brann, Harry Nevin, Evan McLaughlin, Alex Nolan, Kitt Nelson (Kaedayn Kamara, 72 mins), Darragh Crowley, Josh Fitzpatrick, Matthew Kiernan, Freddie Anderson, Seani Maguire (Charlie Lutz, 80 mins), Rory Feely. Tony Brosnan stars as Dr Crokes make winning start in Kerry SFC against Spa

DR CROKES 2-14 SPA 0-13 A much more polished second half display enabled holders Dr Crokes to get off to a winning start from this Killarney derby in their opening Kerry senior football club championship (Group 3) encounter with the hosts at Spa GAA grounds. Despite being sloppy and error-strewn in the opening 30 minutes, the Lewis Road aristocrats still managed to take a one-point lead with them to the break (1-6 to 0-8) and, on the resumption, even against the breeze, they made significant improvements. Goals in either half were decisive. Both were created by star man Tony Brosnan, who finished with 0-8, with the first green flag coming as early as the fifth minute. Mark O'Shea was also involved, and Brosnan supplied Gavin O'Shea for an excellent top-corner finish. Spa, however, were the better side for long periods of the half against their rusty visitors, who were missing the injured Charlie Keating, but otherwise had their six Kerry squad members in action just 12 days after the All-Ireland final victory over Donegal. Centre-back Dan O'Donoghue was impressive, while Dara Moynihan got 47 minutes under his belt, and kicked two fine points for Spa. With Evan Cronin also effective in attack, they were four points up (0-7 to 1-0) before Brosnan rallied Dr Crokes before half-time to lead by the minimum. On the changeover, Dr Crokes were far more secure in possession and against the elements, they showed their trademark patience. David Shaw notched three good points from play, while Gavin White's driving runs from centre-back were regular and effective. The second Dr Crokes goal arrived in the 48th minute when they were just two points clear, 1-9 to 0-10. The evergreen Brian Looney found Brosnan in space, and his unselfishness allowed Cian McMahon to palm home at the back post. Spa kept plugging away, with Niall McCarthy and Gary Vaughan very workmanlike, but with Micheál Burns and White getting on the scoresheet before the end, Dr Crokes finished strongly. The only downside was a first half injury to defender Maidhcí Lynch. Scorers for Dr Crokes: T Brosnan (0-8, 1tpf, 3fs), G O'Shea, C McMahon (1-0 each), D Shaw (0-3), B Looney, M Burns, G White (0-1 each). Scorers for Spa: C Tobin (0-4, 4fs), E Cronin (0-3), D Moynihan (0-2), D Spillane, M Foley, N McCarthy, A Cronin (0-1 each).
