According to a release, the family said, 'James Earl felt that the voice of Darth Vader was inseparable from the story of Star Wars, and he always wanted fans of all ages to continue to experience it. We hope that this collaboration with Fortnite will allow both longtime fans of Darth Vader and newer generations to share in the enjoyment of this iconic character.'
Jones, who died in 2024, had previously announced he was stepping away from the role. But before he died, he signed off on archival voice recordings being used by young filmmakers, who plan to utilize artificial intelligence synthetic speech technology to recreate Jones' younger voice from his previous films for future Lucasfilm projects.
The company recurited the assistance of Respeecher, a Ukrainian startup that uses AI technology to craft new conversations from revitalized old voice recordings. Respeecher's relationship with Lucasfilm began with the Disney+ series 'The Book of Boba Fett,' for which they recreated the voice of young Luke Skywalker. The two also teamed for the voice performance of Darth Vader on the series 'Obi-Wan Kenobi.'
In the game, Darth Vader will be a boss in battle royale. 'Ask him all your pressing questions about the Force, the Galactic Empire… or you know, a good strat for the last Storm circle,' reads the official post on Fortnite's site. 'The Sith Lord has opinions.' It continued, 'Darth Vader wouldn't be nearly as sinister without the legendary performance of James Earl Jones, who voiced Vader in the 'Star Wars' films.'

Brandon Scott Jones on CBS' ‘Ghosts': ‘I enjoy playing characters that are desperate'

Surprise! CBS' Ghosts is quite a revolutionary endeavor, especially for a sitcom on a broadcast network. A big part of that is thanks to costar Brandon Scott Jones, who plays the ephemeral, late Isaac Higgintoot — a soldier who fought on the side of the American Continental Congress in the Revolutionary War. Now, Isaac wasn't a big fan of war — he preferred surrendering post-battle — and actually met his end not by a barrage of buckshot, but due to dysentery. Still, Isaac isn't only revolutionary thanks to his character: He's possibly one of the first American military men to adhere to the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of being gay in the U.S. armed forces. More from GoldDerby Critics hail Celine Song's 'Materialists' as an 'exquisitely made' modern love story - not a 'glossy romantic comedy' Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro reunite, tease 'Meet the Parents 4' 'Heartwarming' yet 'bloated': Film critics are mixed on 'How to Train Your Dragon' live-action remake "In his brain he was so jazzed to be at the beginning of America, and he's not even realizing that some of the stuff he's doing is working against who he is as a person," Jones tells Gold Derby (watch the full interview above). "There's something subversive about that." Like the other ghosts who populate the New York manor in the series (which was recently renewed for a fifth and sixth season) Isaac has some issues to work through before he can finish the death process. But he has a habit of getting in his own way — like when at the end of Season 3 he left the dear, departed redcoat he loved, Nigel (John Hartman), at the altar. "I enjoy playing characters that are desperate, and he is a desperate man who wants to be liked, he wants to be remembered, he wants all these things, and he's trapped in this world where he has to live with his legacy," says Jones. But, he adds, "I think there's something fun about him wanting to be a better person. He's a very slow learner, but he's realizing that he has to make some adjustments and changes." That meant in Season 4 that he literally was in his lowest place – dragged under the dirt by ghostly Puritan Patience (Mary Holland). "He's slowly finding little moments and opportunities to be a good person," explains Jones. "And then he has all these trials and tribulations where he, like, freaks out because the stripper he's in love with dies on the property." The stripper, for context, is not Nigel! SEEDanielle Pinnock on playing Alberta in CBS' 'Ghosts,' representation, and what's next for the hit comedy There are other ways Ghosts pushes the envelope in revolutionary ways, particularly with some of its out there colloquialisms. Ghosts who complete their duties on earth and are taken away are said to be "sucked off," something that might not have made it onto broadcast TV in previous decades. The wording gets Jones chuckling. "Can you believe it?" he says. "We get 'jerked off,' we get 'sucked off,' we get 'go down on us,' like, that's the stuff. It's wild what they can get away with! How lucky are we that we get to do it?" But perhaps the thing that Jones finds most original about the series is that thanks to his character and Nigel's, there's finally a bit of American history being shared in a broadly-watched TV series. "What do we as a collective people recognize to be true about that time period?" Jones asks. "Where does the Revolutionary War stand in pop culture and the Zeitgeist? As I've been playing the part, I've slowly been learning more and more [about history], which has been really fun." While Isaac may be Jones' longest-played character, he's far from the Maryland-born actor's first role. Jones performed with the Upright Citizens Brigade and co-wrote and starred in the 2022 film Senior Year. Audiences may also recognize him from his roles in The Good Place and The Other Two, and he's often cast as snooty, snarky, sassy — or all three. "I'm always interested in playing more that side of things," he says. "It's a fun way to access that part of me that … exists. We all have a little clap-back in ourselves, right? You get to have catharsis on camera and get paid for it." Meanwhile, Jones is working on several non-Ghosts projects that he can't talk about just yet — but he does have one new major element of his life he's happy to discuss: He's now a homeowner. And he's stressed out about it. "Oh, my God, I'm so nervous to become an adult," he says. "I still feel like Kevin McAllister [from Home Alone] every time I go to the grocery store? I'm like, 'What am I doing?' … 'God, these plants!'" Just wait until he finds out whether his new home has any ghosts. Tony Gilroy Knows ‘Andor' Broke the Heart of Cassian and Jyn Shippers

The 'Star Wars' showrunner apologizes for dashing the dreams of one particular slice of the 'Rogue One' fandom. The adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) powered Andor's two epic seasons. But getting to know who he was through those he loves is what catapulted the character from Rogue One one-off into the pantheon of beloved Star Wars heroes. Seeing the added layers of his family and friend circle captivated audiences and introduced us to even more characters we hope to see more of in the future, including his partner and romantic interest, Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona). A rebel heroine in her own right, Caleen pretty much stole our hearts too, but dashed the hopes of Jyn Erso and Cassian shippers across the fandom galaxy. The fleeting tension in Rogue One's elevator scene between the two rebels on the trail of the Death Star plans—who then embrace one another in their final moments—had the fandom taking the mere tease of a romance to mean more. It's something Andor creator and Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy is well aware of. 'I knew very well what had happened with Jyn and Cassian in Rogue One and what had happened in the elevator,' he told Collider; it's something he truncated in the process of re-working the film (there was a kiss shot originally). 'I knew that scene very, very well. I probably went back and looked at that. I was pleased to see that my memory of it was of all the other takes and other things, and I was really pleased to see how we'd edited that, that it was really ambiguous about what it was, and then I didn't care anymore. I was like, 'Okay. It makes sense.'' He explained that Cassian and Bix's love story realistically explores the dynamic of two people who have been in each other's lives for longer than a mission, and who we meet while they're very much not together. 'I mean, they're both pretty sexually liberated in their way,' he said. 'I think that first kiss they had, I think the first person they ever slept with is each other. Who knows how old they were on Ferrix? Probably very, very young. And over time, they were together and not together.' They've clearly had their own separate life experiences. 'Timm starts off the show, and who's in charge of that relationship, right?' Gilroy said, calling out Bix's not-long-for-the-world jealous beau on Ferrix. 'Cassian certainly has a rich history in just the little bit we see, and has alluded to, and his mother calls him out on all his girlfriends, and there's Windi on Niamos. I think they have a very healthy idea of what the different calibrations of love are.' So yes, Cassian and Jyn may have had a moment but its informed by the knowledge of their win against the Empire. 'I mean, why wouldn't you hold somebody's hand at the end of the world?' Gilroy said. 'I felt bad for the people who had invested so much time in the fan fiction and stuff like that. The people who really had gone deep on it. It's not considered canon, and it's not something I have to pay attention to, legally, within the order, but people worked hard on that stuff, and it meant a lot to them. You don't want to trample on somebody's flower garden, you know? But I have to do what I have to do.' As the writer, who is actual steward of the lore, Gilroy at least offered his condolences for blasting the ship along with the Scarif shore Cassian and Jyn held each other on, stating, 'I'm sure there's somebody who will never get over that. I apologize. I really do.'

Everything Announced at Apple WWDC 2025: Unified OS Redesign

WWDC is an annual event where Apple traditionally unveils major software updates to developers, giving them time (and incentive) to support new features and capabilities in upcoming devices -- usually starting with a new iPhone in September. This year brings us a Liquid Glass redesign across operating systems, unified version numbers for the OSes (all ending in 26, e.g., iOS 26), except MacOS Tahoe 26, which still incorporates a tourist destination. Plus, the new Gaming app -- which is mostly a hub but with some group features -- which we've been waiting for. Apple prepped buzz for the event by issuing some retro merchandise for the nostalgic among us. Watch this: WWDC 2025: Everything Revealed in 10 Minutes 09:37 The event began with a buzz video of Craig Federighi, senior VP of software engineering, racing in an F1 car to promote the F1 movie produced by Apple for its Apple TV Plus streaming service. If you're more the "moment-by-moment" type, you can check out our archived live blog. Or just skip to the memes inspired by the closing song. Or just go straight to the part where you complain it bored you. The OS public betas will be available in July. Watch this: Apple Unveils Liquid Glass, a New Design Language 05:53 Liquid Glass redesign stole the show Apple's "gorgeous new design," for all its platforms the first overhaul since iOS 7, made possible by better displays and more powerful components. Apple's vision for its next operating systems' interfaces is almost literally that: It's inspired by VisionOS. The new design system is called Liquid Glass, and brings a return to more pervasive translucency for the OS elements -- the same aesthetic that informs the software for its Vision Pro VR/AR headset. That means more lens-like appearance, with specular highlights and dynamic movement as you change viewing angle. Navigation behavior changes as well. Apple/Screenshot by CNET iOS 26: The new operating system (and naming) is official Liquid Glass will probably make the most impact on Apple's most popular device. But in addition, there's a new unified layout for communications, integrating Phone and FaceTime. Call Screening will wait until someone begins to talk and tell you who it is before ringing through, while Hold Assist will keep the call connected in the background and ring you when someone answers. Across the apps, there are lots of interface elements floating and more features just a tap away. The long-rumored "new destination" for gaming, Apple introduced the Games app. There's a hug for Arcade, and it shows events and your entire game library in a single place. There's Play Together for managing co-op and group challenges. Developers can use that for turning single-player games into group challenges. And it works with a controller. Heck yeah. Watch this: Introducing iOS 26 at WWDC25 04:37 Messages gets a customizable background that's shared across a chat, group chats can host polls, and you can request or receive Apple Cash in group chats. You'll be able to filter messages out from recent and unknown senders out of notifications. Emoji generation gets smarter by letting you combine and modify Genmoji to more accurately reflect what you want to convey. New ChatGPT styles include things like oil painting, or the ability to ask for a specific style that's not a preset. Live Translation is now live in the communications apps with this version of the OS, and will work when you call someone who's not on an iPhone. In addition to the new look, which includes things like dynamic scaling of widgets based on the photo on the lock screen, can automatically make the photo 2.5D and animated artwork for what's playing. There's lyrics, live lyric transliteration, mixing via the new AutoMix feature and music pins in your library. The camera makes it more streamlined to access the basic photo and video modes, plus all the options have been made a quick gesture away. Library and Collections tabs are back in Photos. Apple opens Visual Intelligence to not only screenshot search, but can use it across apps or call up ChatGPT. Maps can learn your preferred routes and take them into account, gives you travel time estimates and remembers where you've been for a visited-location history. Apple Wallet will offer passport info for digital IDs (for everything but flying). Pay will offer in-person redemption of Rewards and use of Installments. Apple/Screenshot by CNET iPadOS 26 gets more Mac-like every year Though probably not the most popular updates people care about, iPadOS 26 did get a lot more architectural changes aside from more Liquid Glass prettiness and the Live Translation, communication and AI features from other devices. The substantive changes include a new windowing system to improve multitasking. There's a grab handle to resize full-screen apps to windows, using the flick gesture to tile -- it works with a trackpad as well as touch. It looks very similar to MacOS. Expose brings up thumbnails of open windows so you can select the one you want. There's also a persistent menu bar at the top of the screen, like a desktop OS. Heck yeah. And it doesn't require a specific high-performing iPad; it works with Stage Manager and on multiple displays. Of course, some people are wondering (dreading?) what it will be like to use on an iPad Mini. Files finally grows up, like a detailed list view with the ability to resize columns, the ability to drag a folder to the Dock and more. Preview comes to the iPad, and the OS adds support for selecting a mic and providing a noise-isolation option across apps. There are also more tools for creators, such as local capture via video conferencing apps, with mic options for better sound. Background tasks -- yes! -- will show up as live activities, so you don't have to put it down and walk away for a render. Apple/Screenshot by CNET MacOS Tahoe... 26 This year's location name is Tahoe, and the update includes the same communications appearance updates as iOS 26. MacOS Tahoe incorporates the Liquid Glass design, too. You can add a new set of controls to the control center, change colors or add emoji to folders. Continuity gets Live Activities, like on the iPhone, and the Phone app comes to the Mac with shared history and the other new AI features. Shortcuts now have intelligent actions, like summarizing text or comparing things. Spotlight adds some of the annoying features of Windows search, like mixing results across types you don't want. Quick Keys are two-letter shortcuts for apps and actions, along with suggestions. It keeps a clipboard history, which should make a lot of folks happy. The Games app on Tahoe has the same features as the app on iPhone, plus an in-game overlay. Updates to Apple's Metal graphics framework, Metal 4, adds frame interpolation, denoising and more for potentially better game performance and quality. Upcoming games include Crimson Desert and Inzoi. Watch this: Apple's WatchOS 26 Gets a New Look and More Features at WWDC25 07:03 Workout Buddy makes its debut in WatchOS The Apple Watch OS incorporates AI in a new Workout Buddy, which keeps your fitness history and offers vocal coaching (ugh, pep talks) with a summary of your workout stats at the end. Workout has a new layout and custom workouts. Smart Stack uses more data to prioritize and predict which features you'll want soon. It's smarter about notifications, basing the volume on the ambient noise in your environment, and adds a Wrist Flick gesture for things like dismissing notifications. The new design permeates Apple TV Plus and TVOS, too. Apple also announced some new upcoming originals and new seasons of existing shows like Slow Horses and Foundation. TVOS will will let you jump back into shows more quickly and gets into karaoke with your iPhone as the mic. Apple/Screenshot by CNET VisionOS 26 adds more for business This operating system already had the look, but Apple's taken VisionOS 26 deeper and more into-the-real-world. Widgets can be personalized and persistently overlaid. The OS will remember window placement. Photos can also create spatial views of photos and automatically convert images in articles, for instance. Personas will potentially look more accurate. Collaborative Pro usage got a co-op game callout, but it's for business. If you're using a shared team device, you can save your settings on your iPhone. There's also a new Eyes Only mode for privacy. Logitech Muse 3D stylus and PSVR hand controllers are two of the interesting new accessories for it. You'll be able to edit Premiere Pro video and playback native 360 degree playback for popular action cams.
