St Augustine Catholic Church youth brings hope to Wedela on Mandela Day
The church's Youth Ministry visited the Vukani Home-based Care Centre in Wedela, where they spent their 67 minutes of service in the spirit of Ubuntu. During the visit, they donated food and clothing to support vulnerable residents in the area.
'We donated food and clothes to the community. The event was a success, and we intend to do more for this community to bring change to other people's lives,' said Anastasia Lefalatsa, an active church member.
She added that the church hopes to secure sponsorships from local stakeholders, including the municipality and nearby businesses, to make an even bigger impact in the future.
The heartfelt initiative reflects the true meaning of Mandela Day — serving others and uplifting communities in need.

Peace programme inspires NOFTA's elderly to find calm
NOFTA is helping its elderly residents discover personal peace through the Peace Education Programme launched last month. 84 guests attended the session, where it was said that the concept will, hopefully, cause a ripple effect of positivity on global harmony. The team, comprising Pravin Vadher, Umesh Jivan, Vinay Vadher, and Nirana Jivan, was joined remotely by Dr Kay Maharaj (Durban) and Mukesh Parbhoo (Johannesburg). The presentation included video excerpts from internationally acclaimed author and speaker, Prem Rawat, whose powerful insights resonated strongly with NOFTA members. Following the positive reception of the introductory session, NOFTA has invited the Peace Education team to roll out the full programme for its members. Participants have already expressed enthusiasm about continuing the journey toward inner peace. Each participant will receive a certificate upon completion of the programme. About the Peace Education Programme The Peace Education Programme is a video-based workshop series designed to help individuals discover their inner strength and personal peace. It encourages reflection on themes such as choice, hope, and dignity. Rather than defining personal peace, the programme empowers participants to develop their own understanding. It has been implemented successfully in community centres, schools, universities, healthcare facilities, senior centres, homeless shelters, rehabilitation clinics, and correctional institutions. The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) makes the programme materials freely available to volunteers and organisations, offering access in over 84 countries and 40 languages. Police station gets Mandela Day overhaul
Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) took their Mandela Day community service initiative to new heights this year, spending not only 67 minutes, but a whole two weeks in service of the community, by carrying out extensive maintenance at the Roodepoort Police Station. According to RNW chairperson Andreas Oberlechner, they have, over the past two weeks, tirelessly worked to reach their goal of completion by Mandela Day. 'The initiative was driven by Captain Juanita Yorke and the RNW as part of the Roodepoort CPF,' says Oberlechner. 'It involved the painting of a reserved parking bay for one of the physically challenged officers, so that accessible parking is always available for him. 'We also conducted a much-needed cleanup and maintenance of the police station grounds, cutting back trees and vegetation within the precinct.' Local business Gibson's Tree Felling and Garden Maintenance Services showed exceptional community spirit, and agreed to tender their services free of charge for the drastic cutback of overgrown trees and vegetation and the removal of invasive trees and shrubs. 'Tons of wood and vegetation were removed and the parking area was cleaned and rid of weeds, transforming and uplifting the precinct that, due to severe budgetary constraints, has not been maintained as it needed to be,' says Oberlechner. 'The RNW would like to thank all parties that participated, especially Gibson Chikwanda and his team, Felix de Gouveia of Village Fastfoods, for sponsoring and supplying the refreshments and Captain Yorke for the initiative that made this Mandela Day project possible,' he concludes.

School in Eikenhof receives boost from community, corporate partners
The Elethu Themba Combined School in Eikenhof recently had a heartwarming two-part celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, receiving generous support from a wide network of partners and community members. Due to the reopening of schools on July 22, the first leg of Mandela Day activities took place on July 25. This phase focused on beautifying the school environment, including cleaning and painting to give the facility a much-needed facelift. This effort was made possible through the collaboration of teachers, parents and community members, who donated their time and energy. Corporate support added further value to the day: • Astron Energy Kibler Park contributed essential consumables; • Astron Energy Eikenhof supplied paint; • Eye of Africa Estate helped clean around the school and prune trees; • The Sharing Kindness Foundation provided plants to enhance the school's garden. The second leg of the initiative was held on July 31, with a strong focus on supporting learners. This day was made memorable through the efforts of Astron Energy, Reef Tankers and Gift of the Givers. These organisations donated: • much-needed shoes, restoring dignity and comfort to underprivileged learners; • stationery packs for distribution later in the year to support learners during exams; Ward 125 Clr Matsobane Sekhu said while bringing smiles to children's faces is a joy in itself, these efforts also contribute to a larger goal. Nelson Mandela believed in the power of education and envisioned it as a cornerstone for nation-building. 'As a community, we share this vision. Those who seek to build a successful nation must invest in education and the well-being of our children. 'On behalf of the Ward 125 community, we thank all the partners and individuals who continue to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy by supporting our school and its learners. Your kindness and commitment make a real and lasting difference,' noted Sekhu.
