Microsoft CEO says OpenAI alliance changing but remains strong
Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella said his company's crucial partnership with OpenAI is changing, but remains strong.
'Any company that has gone from being a research lab to one of the most successful product companies of this age, obviously things have to change for them and for us and in the context of the partnership,' Nadella said in an interview on the The Circuit with Emily Chang.
The world's largest software maker is seen as a leader in commercializing AI due to its relationship with, and $13.75 billion investment in, the ChatGPT maker. Still, there have been signs of friction between the companies as each launches competing products and seeks out additional partners.
Nadella noted that OpenAI is Microsoft's largest infrastructure customer and said his company is 'thrilled' to have access to the AI powerhouse's technology. 'Having that multifaceted partnership is what we are really focused on,' he said. 'Why would any one of us want to go upset that?'
The current contract continues through 2030, but a revision earlier this year allows OpenAI to rent computing power from other providers to train AI models. 'I hope that for decades to come, Microsoft and OpenAI will be partnered in variety of different ways,' Nadella said. 'Will they have other partners? Absolutely. Will we have other partners? Absolutely.'
In a previous episode of The Circuit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, 'We do get a lot of great stuff from Microsoft, but I think this is more than any one company can deliver.' To secure more computing for its power-hungry AI models, OpenAI has joined forces with Oracle Corp., SoftBank Group Corp. and others on an AI infrastructure effort called Stargate.
Still, 'Microsoft will do a lot of compute for us, a lot, a lot,' Altman said. 'We're very happy about that.'
Microsoft, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has been weaving AI tools into its suite of business applications — an effort designed to boost the company's share of the global market for cloud services.
Nadella also is keen to use AI to reboot Microsoft's consumer business, which has long struggled against its peers. To accelerate the process, he recruited DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman last year to create an AI-focused consumer franchise. Suleyman has pledged to create emotionally intelligent assistants that can be tailored to users' individual needs.
'The number-one priority for us is that we have to produce beautiful, elegant consumer products that regular young people love,' Suleyman said an interview. 'And that is not the way that people currently think of Microsoft products today.'
Microsoft's consumer assistant, dubbed Copilot, has gained some traction but is up against steep competition, most notably from OpenAI. Last month, ChatGPT was downloaded 105 million times between Apple and Android mobile phones, roughly 20 times the number of consumer Copilot downloads, according to research firm Sensor Tower.
Nadella points out that because Microsoft provides much of OpenAI's computing, his company makes money every time ChatGPT is used. 'Every day that ChatGPT succeeds is a fantastic day for Microsoft,' he said.

Google Gemini now supports scheduled actions, introduces new swipe gesture for Live
Google was one of the few companies that jumped on the AI bandwagon early on, but the tech giant still seems to be playing catch-up with startups like OpenAI. Earlier this year, in January, the Sam Altman-led company introduced a new feature that enabled users to schedule tasks in ChatGPT to run automated prompts. Now, in a blog post, Google has announced that it is bringing 'Scheduled Actions' to Gemini. Announced at this year's I/O, Google says the new functionality is 'designed to proactively handle your tasks.' Similar to ChatGPT's schedule tasks, Gemini users will now be able to streamline their routine tasks and even get personalised updates from the AI chatbot. The tech giant says users can now ask Gemini to do things like completing a task at a specified time, or changing the prompt you are already using for a recurring task. Moreover, Gemini can now show you a summary of your calendar, unread emails, and fetch information and give updates about your favourite sports team on the go. However, the scheduled actions feature is limited to users with a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription and eligible Google Workspace business and education plans. Also, it is still unclear if Gemini, like ChatGPT, has limited scheduled action to ten active tasks and if they can pause or delete an old task if they hit the limit. Google also said that Gemini will soon get an 'upgraded preview' of Gemini 2.5 Pro. The new large language model builds on the company's recently unveiled 2.5 Pro model, which is better than its predecessors in coding. The company is also making it easier for users to access Gemini Live. Instead of tapping on the dedicated Gemini Live action from the bottom of the screen, you can now simply swipe from the right side of the screen to the left to open Gemini Live.

AI University: State govt, NVIDIA Sign MoU
Vijayawada: The Government of Andhra Pradesh and NVIDIA have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance the establishment of a proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) University and foster a robust AI ecosystem through skilling, research, infrastructure development and startup acceleration. This collaboration is aimed at positioning Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in AI-driven innovation and talent development. As part of this partnership, the two parties will work together to skill 10,000 engineering students across Andhra Pradesh over the next two years. NVIDIA will also provide curriculum guidance and technical training resources to support AI education and capacity building in engineering colleges across the State. In addition to workforce development, the MoU also focuses on enhancing research and development capabilities. NVIDIA will support the identification and establishment of AI research centres that will address pressing technological challenges and develop transformative solutions across sectors. Both parties will encourage joint research initiatives that contribute to the growth of AI knowledge and applications. Speaking on this occasion, IT Minister Nara Lokesh said, 'This partnership with NVIDIA marks a decisive step in our vision to position Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in artificial intelligence. By equipping 10,000 students with cutting-edge AI skills and supporting our startup ecosystem, we are laying the foundation for a future-ready economy driven by innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.' Google Gemini now capable of scheduling tasks like ChatGPT
If you've ever wished your AI assistant could remember the small stuff so you don't have to, Google has just granted that wish, at least for some of you. Gemini, the company's increasingly capable AI chatbot, is getting a proactive makeover with a handy new feature called Scheduled Actions. It's essentially your digital butler, now with a teased at Google I/O, this new functionality is finally rolling out to select users on Android and iOS, and it's designed to do more than just answer questions. With Scheduled Actions, you can instruct Gemini to carry out tasks on a recurring or timed basis, and it'll follow through without further prompting. Think of it as giving Gemini a standing order, and it actually say every Sunday you want five fresh blog post ideas, or perhaps you fancy a digest of your calendar events and inbox highlights every morning at 8, or maybe you simply need reminding about that dentist appointment on Tuesday. Gemini now has you covered. Once set, these scheduled prompts are managed from the new Scheduled Actions section tucked inside the app's settings. The feature brings Gemini one step closer to its ChatGPT rival, especially the Tasks tool that OpenAI launched earlier this year. But where ChatGPT sends scheduled reminders through the app and email, Gemini goes a step further by integrating seamlessly with Google's ecosystem, from Gmail and Calendar to Docs and beyond. The result? A smoother, more centralised experience that keeps everything under the Google Gemini has already been able to help users stay on top of to-dos and information through on-demand prompts, Scheduled Actions now allows it to deliver what you want, when you want it proactively. Not everyone will have access to Scheduled Actions straight away. If you're on a free tier or standard plan, you'll have to wait your knowing Google's history, there's a decent chance that Scheduled Actions will become widely available down the line. After all, features like Smart Compose and Google Assistant routines eventually made their way to the masses — often at no extra short, Gemini's new scheduling ability is a meaningful step towards making AI more useful and less reactive. For busy professionals, students, and anyone juggling a million tabs — mental or otherwise — this update might just be the productivity nudge they've been waiting then, those lucky enough to get early access can enjoy Gemini acting like the most dependable colleague you've never had, one that never forgets, never complains, and doesn't even need a coffee break.
