A popular restaurant near the University of South Carolina campus was on fire Saturday night.
California Dreaming, at 401 South Main Street with Green's Beverages, near Assembly Street, was the scene of a fire, according to Columbia Fire Department.
Members of the fire department responded to the restaurant just before 9:30 p.m., and quickly called for more help in the form of a 2nd Alarm after flames were seen shooting through a rear section of the roof and the building's third floor, the fire department said.
Both customers and employees were inside the restaurant when the fire started, according to the fire department. Everyone evacuated safely and there were no injuries, including the emergency responders, the fire department said.
Firefighters established a water supply before they entered the burning building and traced the fire to the ventilation system of the restaurant, according to the fire department.
At 10:22 p.m., the fire department said the blaze had been brought under control, and by 11:11 p.m. officials confirmed the fire had been extinguished.
Information about what caused the fire in the restaurant's ventilation system was not available, and officials did not say if the blaze remains under investigation.
There was no word on the extent of the damage to the restaurant caused by the flames, smoke and water the firefighters used to quickly contain and limit the blaze.
Prior to the fire, California Dreaming was scheduled to open at 11 a.m. Sunday, according to the its website. Calls to learn about the restaurant's status were unanswered, but at about 10:30 a.m., restaurant officials used a Facebook post to announce they'd be open as scheduled.
'Greetings from California Dreaming. We're open today, Sunday, 5/25— and feeling extra grateful.'
There was a similar fire at the restaurant in June 2018, and it was soon again open for business after that incident caused minor damage.
California Dreaming is part of a restaurant chain. The chain operates six locations overall, with four in South Carolina and single restaurants in Georgia and Alabama, according to its website.

Major Exmouth gas network upgrade making 'good progress'

A major gas network upgrade is moving forward on schedule. The £552,000 investment project is being delivered by Wales & West Utilities in the Salterton Road area of Exmouth to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of gas to homes and businesses now and for years to come. The work, which began in February, involves upgrading ageing gas pipes as part of a wider programme to modernise the network. Roxanne Whittaker from Wales & West Utilities said: "We are making good progress with this project and, barring any engineering difficulties, we are on track to finish during November. "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. "While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the area. "Whether it's heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it. "This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future." Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Devon County Council to coordinate the project and manage traffic disruption. Current traffic measures include a road closure on the Salterton Road service road until Thursday, June 20, and a parking suspension on Salterton Road, also in place until June 20. Chapel Lane will be closed from Sunday, June 23, until the end of August, with residents being notified directly about access arrangements. Anyone with questions about the work can contact the company's customer service team on 0800 912 2999, or reach out via X (formerly Twitter) @WWUtilities or on Facebook at Wales & West Utilities serves around 7.5 million people across the South West of England and Wales.

Once again, people are asking if there are mountain lions in the Mountain State

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — After a few locally viral Facebook posts, people are once again questioning whether the Mountain State is home to mountain lions. Snake season: What to do if you find a snake in your yard Todd Dowdy, Wildlife Biologist with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, said no, there are no native mountain lions remaining in West Virginia. He said, if there were, someone would have gotten more concrete proof, especially in this day and age. 'Most hunters use trail cameras at this point so there's thousands of trail cameras on the landscape here in West Virginia every fall. We have several houndsmen that pursue bears with dogs and raccoons. So, these sportsmen are gonna run into a mountain lion at some point, if there were mountain lions on the landscape,' said Dowdy. Dowdy said in the 25 years he has been with DNR no one has provided hard evidence of a mountain lion in the state. He said hard evidence would be a very good quality photo, a print or casting of a track, mountain lion scat, or the full mountain lion carcass. Dowdy said it would be hard to mistake a creature that is nearly seven feet long, tip to tail, and weighs upwards of 80 pounds. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rodeo Star Spencer Wright's Wife Kallie Honors 3-Year-Old Son on the 1-Year Anniversary of His Death

Levi Wright's mom, Kallie Wright, is remembering her late son on the one-year anniversary of his death. 'A year ago today we held you as you took your last breaths. They said it could take a day or 2, I was so scared I wouldnt be holding you when you left and that was so important to me,' Kallie captioned an Instagram post on Monday, June 2. 'You stayed with us 17 minutes. As you left an overwhelming feeling came over me & I knew we had done right by you.' In the photo, Kellie held Levi in his hospital bed while her husband, Spencer Wright, stayed close to them both. 'For me this isnt the day you fully left us but the day it became official,' Kallie's caption continued. 'Levi we talk about and think of you everyday. We live for you! Our love for you is stronger than ever.' Levi was hospitalized in May 2024 following an accident that caused a severe brain injury. The Beaver County Sheriff's Office confirmed that 3-year-old Levi 'had driven a toy tractor into a river' and received 'life saving measures' before being taken to the hospital. After a day of medical care, Levi's family — including Spencer, a rodeo star, and Kallie — offered an update on his condition through family friend Mindy Sue Clark, who was sharing updates via Facebook. (The couple are also parents to daughter Steeley and son Brae.) Rodeo Star Spencer Wright and Wife Kallie's Family Album With 3 Kids: Photos Kallie also offered an update on her son's condition hours before his June 2024 death. 'After several sleepless nights, lots of research, multiple conversations with the world's best neurologists & millions of prayers we are here in the face of our biggest fear. Levi showed us just enough to buy us time for all of this,' Kallie captioned a Facebook video at the time. 'We prayed those things were him defying odds & proving to us that he wanted to stay here but we see now he wanted to give us time to find peace with letting him go. I told you my baby was thoughtful & considerate, I truly believe he did that for us.' Levi was put on life support following his accident. 'Here soon I'll climb into bed with my baby and hold him as he falls asleep for the last time on this earth,' she wrote. 'I find comfort in knowing he will be restored to the perfect little boy he was & have the ability to do all the things he loves! I know there are Angels up there waiting to hold him until I can again!'
