Niagara Falls city councillor charged with assault
The 54-year-old former boxer was arrested by Niagara Regional Police early Saturday after an incident at his home in Niagara Falls.
Court documents show Strange was charged with assault on a woman and released from the St. Catharines courthouse the same day with conditions.
'I've never harmed a woman and wouldn't under any circumstance,' Strange said in statement after being reached by phone Tuesday.
'This situation has a vindictive element that unfortunately may need a court process. Until that time, my family and I will have to stay strong in the face of all the negative insinuations.'
Strange, who wasn't in council chambers for the start of the Niagara Falls council meeting Tuesday afternoon, added, 'I stand against intimate partner violence in all forms.'
Strange wasn't present when council voted to go in-camera at the start of the meeting, but was in attendance when the public portion of agenda resumed.
A Niagara Regional Police spokesperson said officers were called to a Niagara Falls residence in the area of Rousseau Place and Appleford Avenue at about 3 a.m. May 3 for a report of a domestic assault.
Police said officers arrived to find an adult female with injuries, who was treated at the scene.
Shortly after, a 54-year-old male was arrested and charged with domestic assault.
Police said they would not release the name of the accused to protect the identity of the victim due to the nature of the charges.
Court documents show Strange was released from custody on a promise to pay $2,000 if he fails to comply with conditions of his release order and $2,000 from a surety.
The conditions of his release include that he reside at an address approved by his surety, that he not contact or communicate with the alleged victim and that he not be within 100 metres of where she might be, including home, work, or any other place she frequents.
He also can't possess any weapons.
His next court appearance is on June 6 in St. Catharines.
Strange is a three-time Olympic boxer and Commonwealth Games champion, who's now a Niagara Falls city councillor, realtor and organizer of fundraising events to support children and their families dealing with life-threatening or life-altering illness or injury.
In March 2024, Strange, who had a 20-plus-year boxing career, was inducted into the Canadian Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame.
In 2022, he was inducted into the Canada Games Hall of Honour as a distinguished alumnus.
Strange went on to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games, winning gold in 1994 and 1998, and at the Olympic Games, competing in 1992, 1996 and 2000.
In 2001, Strange was acquitted on two drunk-driving charges, but in 2002 was convicted for drinking and driving. He was fined $700 and was prohibited from driving a motor vehicle for one year.

‘Devastating to the family': Investigation into child fatality at St. Catharines parking lot continues
Police say the child that was killed outside the St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre this week was part of a group walking on a sidewalk when a car left the roadway and struck them. Niagara Regional Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision that happened at about 11:40 a.m. on Thursday. Const. Rich Hingley said out of respect for the family's privacy, police are not releasing the exact age of the child, who was under 12, or the child's gender. 'This is devastating to the family, obviously, and the community is heartbroken,' he said by email. 'Our investigators are also sharing in their grief and are doing everything in their investigative capacity to bring a complete and thorough investigation back to the family and public.' The child was on site taking part in a day program. Hingley said at about 11:40 a.m., a group of children and a counsellor were walking along a sidewalk from the facility to the park area when a vehicle left the roadway portion of the parking lot and went up onto the sidewalk. The child was struck and died. At least two other people were hit by the vehicle — another child and a counsellor — but had minor or no injuries. Hingley said it is too early for investigators to determine a cause of the collision. The exact circumstances around whether the vehicle was entering a parking spot are still under investigation. The driver remained on scene. Police have ruled out impairment by drugs or alcohol. The St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre is located at the corner of Carlton and Niagara streets in Lester B. Pearson Park, which has a range of outdoor amenities. The city said the child was part of a private camp that was using the fields. The city closed the aquatics centre and its Dr. Huq Library branch on Thursday. They reopened the buildings on Friday but the pools were closed and all programs were cancelled for the day. St. Catharines CAO David Oakes said the decision was made to give the aquatics and facilities staff 'the time they needed to process and deal with the traumatic event that occurred.' 'We understand the importance of our services to the community, and we want to ensure that our staff is well-supported during this time,' he said. He said the facility will resume normal operations on Saturday. Mayor Mat Siscoe put out a statement of condolence on social media saying he was devastated by the tragic news. 'On behalf of city council and the City of St. Catharines, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to the family of the young victim. Your community is standing with you during this difficult time.' Ontario recently made changes to the Highway Traffic Act to expand careless driving laws to private parking lots. Hingley said it's too early in the investigation to determine if any charges are applicable. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. ‘Terrible dream': One horse found dead, others maimed in targeted attack in rural Welland
One horse is dead and several others were injured in what Niagara Regional Police are calling a disturbing act of animal cruelty at a rural property in Welland. In a news release, police said eight horses were targeted overnight Thursday at a horse boarding facility on Buchner Road , east of Highway 140. While police did not name the facility, it has been identified as Eagle Wing Ranch, 426 Buchner Rd. — a family-owned hunter/jumper training farm with indoor and outdoor riding arenas. In a post on Facebook , Eagle Wing Ranch owner Amanda Janssen said there were 'no words to describe the shock and devastation our barn staff and family felt as yesterday unfolded.' 'It felt like a terrible dream you were begging to wake up from. The grief is heavy as we mourn the loss of a very special horse and the injuries of seven others. We are still reeling trying to make sense of something so unnecessary and evil.' Located on 6.5 hectares along the north side of Buchner Road, the ranch includes a 17-stall barn, tack and feed rooms, and backs on to Lyons Creek, according to its website. It offers lessons for beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. Farm staff discovered the injured animals during their morning routine. Several horses had wounds consistent with cuts or stabbings, and one horse was found dead, said police. Another was taken to an out-of-town veterinary hospital for emergency care, while others received treatment on site. Forensic unit investigators examined the scene and are continuing their investigation. Horses are seen outside Welland's Eagle Wing Ranch on Friday. Police said they take reports of animal cruelty seriously and are asking for the public's help. Janssen said in her social media post that all thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for the injured mare are appreciated. 'A special thanks to Dr. Matt Nugent who came promptly and triaged horses as we sickeningly came to conclusions this was an act of violence. 'Thank you to the police, detectives and forensics for their professionalism, attentiveness and empathy. Thank you to all the overwhelming support we have felt from our horse community near and far,' she said online. 'Right now we are taking it day by day and hugging our ponies a little tighter,' Janssen posted. Anyone with information is asked to call 905-688-4111 , option 3, extension 1009487.
