Fire put out 21 hrs later; ‘mall safety system didn't work'
No one was injured, but the fire caused large-scale destruction. It spread across the basements and four floors and engulfed the roof dome, multiple shops, garment stocks, cosmetics and other goods, covering 8,000-10,000sqft. The mall had 220 shops and two eateries.
Hundreds of shopkeepers who lost inventory worth lakhs returned to survey the damage from outside, worried about an uncertain future. "Authorities have sealed access, citing dangerously high temperatures, preventing us from retrieving anything that may have survived the fire," said Imran Sheikh, one of those affected. Another shopkeeper, Azim Khan, said he lost inventory worth Rs 6 lakh. Many said they had recently increased their stocks for the vacation months.
According to the fire brigade's preliminary report, the absence of ventilation in the basements and an internal firefighting system contributed to the fire's rapid spread. "The enclosed roof and glass exteriors prevented the smoke and heat from escaping," said a civic official. Officials said the resultant intense heat and dense smoke made it difficult to access the upper floors. Senior officials said the crammed passageway to the basement and the delayed SOS call hit firefighting operations.
The fire brigade has launched a probe into the fire's cause. Following a demand by Bandra West MLA Ashish Shelar, BMC appointed joint commissioner Gangatharan D to hold a separate probe.

BMC seeks public views on pigeon feeding at kabutarkhana
MUMBAI: Following a Bombay High Court directive, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun inviting suggestions and objections from citizens on whether pigeon feeding at designated kabutarkhana should be regulated. Mumbai, India. Aug 06, 2025: On Wednesday morning, over a hundred members of the Jain community protested at Dadar. They forcefully opened the Dadar Kabutarkhana, removed the plastic sheet, and offered grains to the pigeons. Mumbai, India. Aug 06, 2025. (Photo by Raju Shinde/HT Photo) (Raju Shinde) The move comes after the court, on August 13, ordered the formation of a committee and mandated public consultation on the issue. So far, the civic body has received three formal applications—one from the Dadar Kabutarkhana Trust Board, another from Yasmin Bhansali and Company, and a third from animal and bird rights activist Pallavi Patil. While the applications will be made public on Monday through the BMC's official website, it is learnt that all three parties have offered to take responsibility for feeding pigeons at shelters and to supply pigeon feed. In line with the court's order, the BMC has now opened a window for citizens to share their views between August 18 and 29. Feedback is being sought on whether feeding should be restricted to fixed hours, carried out only in a regulated manner, and on broader concerns about the management of pigeon shelters. Residents can send their responses by email to suggestions@ or submit written feedback in person at the designated BMC office during working hours.

Mumbai civic body says it has received three applications for controlled feeding of pigeons
Mumbai: After the Bombay high court told the BMC to seek feedback from the public before deciding whether to allow controlled pigeon feeding, the BMC said it had received three applications, including from the Dadar Kabutar Khana trust for controlled feeding, and sought objections and suggestions from citizens. They have been asked to submit suggestions and objections, on allowing controlled feeding at specific timings to pigeons at areas where they are fed, between August 18 and 29. The Bombay high court Ddivision bench of Justices Girish Kulkarni and Arif Doctor on August 13 said, "You (BMC) cannot just allow feeding now once you have already taken a closure decision keeping public health in mind. You will have to take a well-considered decision. Once an application is received, you need to issue a notice and invite objections from people and then make a decision. Once you have taken a decision keeping people's health in mind, you need to maintain that sanctity.
