Rig Vedic scholar Satya Chandrashekarendra anointed as junior pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam
The 25-year-old acharya, known as Ganesha Sharma Dravid before his initiation into sanyasa as per the tradition at the Kanchi matam, was identified by the matam as successor to the present Seer Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya. The historic event took place on the auspicious Akshya Thritiya attended by the seers from across the country.
During the Sanyasa Sweekara Mahotsavam, the senior pontiff Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi blessed the Sanyasa name of Satya Chandrashekarendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya to Duddu Satya Venkata Surya Subramanya Ganesha Sharma Dravid, marking the latter's ascension as "71st Shankaracharya of the Peetam" according to Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
The rituals connected with the ascension commenced on Tuesday at the Pancha Ganga Teertham, Sri Kanchi Kamakshi Ambal Devasthanam. Special pujas at Sri Kamakshi Ambal Sannidhi and Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya Sannidhi at Sri Kamakshi temple, marked the occasion.
Special pujas were held at Sri Shankaracharya and Sri Sureshwaracharya Sannidhi, too, followed by the junior pontiff's visit to Brindavan of Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati and Sri Jayendra Saraswati Shankaracharya.
Prasadams from various temples across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and other states were offered to the 71st acharya by the temple representatives.
"The event coincided with the 2534th Jayanti Mahotsavam (May 2, 2025) of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya who established Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam in 482 BCE. Since then, the Peetam has the distinction of an unbroken line of 70 acharyas (spiritual leaders)," according to Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
This Rig Vedic scholar from Annavaram Kshetra in Andhra Pradesh, had served at Sri Gnana Saraswathi Devasthanam, Basara, Nirmal district, Nizamabad, Telangana. He completed his studies in Yajurveda, Samaveda, Shadangas, and Dashopanishat, also.
The senior pontiff was made acharya of the Peetam at a young age of 15 by his predecessor and 69th pontiff Jayendra Saraswathi on May 29, 1983.
Jayendra Saraswathi was made the acharya by his predecessor Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi on March 24, 1954.

Single-use plastic banned in temples across state
Vijayawada: A significant step toward making Andhra Pradesh's spiritual sites plastic-free was taken on Friday with the statewide implementation of a ban on single-use plastics in temples. The initiative, led by the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), aims to promote environmental sustainability and reduce plastic waste. Chairman of the APPCB Dr P Krishnayya announced the milestone, crediting the support of key state leaders. 'The directives of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the commitment of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, the support of endowments minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, and the guidance of the APPCB have made this historic decision possible,' he stated. He also expressed gratitude to endowments commissioner Ramachandra Mohan for his efforts in ending the use of single-use plastics in temples. The initiative will begin with Sri Kanaka Durga temple and the Malleswara Swamy temple in Vijayawada, with plans to expand to over 120 major temples across the state. The renowned Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) was cited as a forerunner in this movement, having already implemented a ban on plastic water bottles and using biodegradable covers for its famous Laddu Prasadam. Under the new rules, plastic carry bags, bottles, disposable plates, and cups will be prohibited within temple premises. Devotees, vendors, and staff are being encouraged to switch to eco-friendly alternatives like cloth bags, steel tumblers, and leaf plates. 'Lakhs of devotees visit temples every year. This effort will significantly reduce plastic waste, increase environmental awareness, and serve as a model for green spiritual tourism,' Dr Krishnayya said. He urged temple managements to enforce the ban strictly and conduct awareness programs for the public. This initiative is part of a broader vision to enhance public health and maintain cleanliness around temples while preserving traditions in an environmentally friendly manner. Dr Krishnayya congratulated the endowments department for blending spirituality with environmental protection and called on everyone to join the cause of making temples in Andhra Pradesh plastic-free.

Bhashyotsava national conference begins at NSU
Tirupati: As part of the three-day Bhashyotsava at National Sanskrit University (NSU), Tirupati, the national conference was inaugurated on Monday. Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham pontiff Shankara Vijayendra Saraswati Swami addressed the participants virtually at the inaugural session and blessed them. Sadhu Bhadresh Das Swamiji from Swaminarayan Akshardham, New Delhi, addressed the gathering and reflected on the spiritual and philosophical depth of the Akshar Purushottam Bhashya, with particular focus on its interpretation of the Prasthana Trayi — the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahma Sutras. The inaugural session featured notable scholars, including UGC Vice Chairperson and ICAPR Chairman Prof Deepak Kumar Srivastava, Prof Sachidananda Mishra, Acharya Harekrishna Sathapati, Prof Murali Manohar Pathak, and Prof Sukhant Kumar Senapati. The speakers highlighted the enduring philosophical relevance and social value of classical commentaries on the Prasthana Trayi, both in Sanskrit and in vernacular languages. Presiding over the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof GSR Krishna Murthy underscored the relevance of these ancient interpretations in addressing the challenges of modern society. He also expressed his appreciation to the organisations and individuals supporting the conference.

Kanaka Durga Temple Dasara celebrations from Sept 22
Vijayawada: The highly anticipated Dasara cele brations at the Sri Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada are set to commence from September 22 and continue until October 2. Temple Executive Officer (EO) VK Seena Naik announced that providing hassle-free darshan for common devotees will be the top priority during the festivities. Speaking to mediapersons at the temple premises, the Executive Officer released the complete schedule of the Dasara celebrations. As per the schedule, the presiding deity, Goddess Kanaka Durga, will bless devotees in various divine forms each day: September 22: Sri Bala Tripurasundari Devi avataram; September 23: Sri Gayatridevi avataram; 24: Sri Annapurnadevi avataram; 25: Sri Katyayani Devi avataram; 26: Sri Mahalakshmi Devi avataram; 27: Sri Lalita Tripurasundari Deviavataram; 28: Sri Maha Chandi Devi avataram; 29: Sri Saraswati Devi avataram; 30: Sri Durga Devi avataram; October 1: Sri Mahishasura Mardani Devi avataram; October 2 (Vijaya Dasami): Sri Rajarajeswari Devi avataram. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will offer Pattu Vastram (silk robes) to the presiding deity on September 29, which marks Moola Nakshatram and features the Saraswati Devi alankaram from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The Maha Purnahuti will be performed at 9:30 am on Vijaya Dasami day, October 2. The celebrations will culminate with the grand Hamsa Vaahana Teppotsavam (float festival) on the Krishna River, scheduled for 5:00 pm on the concluding day of Dasara, October 2.
