Heartbroken family of Scots sailor who went missing pay tribute to 'lovely and kind man'
Garry Turnbull from failed to return from a sailing trip off the Solway coast, with his body found following a major search.
The heartbroken family of a sailor who went missing off the Solway coast have paid tribute to a 'lovely, personable and kind man'.
Garry Turnbull from Gatehouse failed to return from a sailing trip in Fleet Bay.
That sparked a major search for the 72-year-old involving lifeboat crews, Coastguard teams and a helicopter, with his body later found near Whithorn.
His family said: 'Sailing was his 'forever' hobby, especially dinghy sailing, and every summer you would see Garry launching off Mossyard beach in his wee dinghy Jolly.
'He was a lovely, personable and kind man. He was so generous with his expertise. Incredibly practical but also creative, always happy to share what he knew.
'He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he gave so much to.'
Mr Turnbull had gone sailing on the afternoon of May 13 and was reported missing that evening after he failed to return.
Coastguard teams from Ballantrae, Isle of Whithorn, Kirkcudbright, Portling, Stranraer and Portpatrick, RNLI boats from Kirkcudbright and Stranraer and Port William Inshore Rescue Service were involved in the search of the Fleet Bay, Wigtown Bay and Garlieston Bay areas.
Also taking part in the search were a Coastguard helicopter, Galloway Mountain Rescue Team, drones and air support units.
His dinghy was found on Wednesday, with Mr Turnbull's body being found near Whithorn on Thursday afternoon.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: 'There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.'
His family said: 'Garry grew up in Castle Douglas with his siblings Peter, Lindy, Michael and Ali Turnbull.
'He did his Highers at Kirkcudbright Academy and went on to college in Glasgow and qualified as a quantity surveyor, however he didn't use this qualification and instead turned his mind to the film industry while living in Edinburgh.
'This took him to London in the early 1970s where he and his German girlfriend Sibs set up house in Soho and then Brixton where they raised their family – Hannah, Felix and Jim.
'He recently became a grandfather to Felix's newborn daughter Jeanie, who he loved very much.
'Garry went on to follow a career in film making as a cameraman, often travelling to Turkey to work frequently in Istanbul filming commercials, feature films and music videos.
'He was always drawn to Galloway and came often with his (now) wife Sibs and children to holiday in and around Gatehouse and Mossyard.
'Garry and Sibs moved to Castle Douglas from London when they both retired, buying a plot of land in Gatehouse and spending a couple of years building their home, moving in about four years ago.
'Garry quickly became a valued member of Gatehouse life.
'He was a volunteer at Wheels of Fleet and a trustee at the Mill of Fleet and a well loved member of the community, greatly missed by all who knew him.'

Investigators congratulate themselves as Madeleine McCann searches end
Search teams wound down the operation in Atalaia, near Lagos, Portugal, on Thursday, after three days of scouring scrubland and abandoned structures. Their efforts focused on a 120-acre stretch of land, using equipment such as chainsaws, diggers and a ground-penetrating radar. The operation comes 18 years after three-year-old Madeleine disappeared from nearby Praia da Luz while on holiday with her family in 2007. The British girl vanished after she was left sleeping while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, went for dinner in a nearby restaurant. Officers involved in the latest searches held a debrief before leaving the site, and there was a round of applause before a crate of German beer was removed from one of the tents in the designated base area. After the Augustiner beers were carried away, some officers struggled to grapple with the tents they were taking down because of the blustery conditions. Earlier in the day, personnel could be seen holding pitchforks as they combed stretches of land. Pick-axes and shovels were used to dig some of the undergrowth and a digger was again used to remove rubble from one of the abandoned structures at the site. They spent the first two days of the search focusing on one particular derelict building, using ground-penetrating radar on the cobbled ground after clearing the area of debris and vegetation using a digger and chainsaws. British officers have not been present at the latest searches, the Metropolitan Police said. Madeleine's parents have not commented during the 'active police investigation', staff at the Find Madeleine Campaign said. German authorities requested the search as part of their continued attempts to source evidence to implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought. In October last year, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. In 2023, investigators carried out searches near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz. Brueckner spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017 and had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir.

Earlier today, investigators indicated that they were expected to end their search on Thursday if nothing was found. The operation kicked off on Tuesday, June 3, with teams scouring through more than 20 plots of land east of Praia da Luz. This included spots between the Ocean Club holiday resort where Madeleine vanished and the cottage where German authorities' prime suspect Christian Breuckner lived. Search teams discovered animal bones and pieces of adult clothing at these sites, according to Portuguese TV reports. The huge operation saw more than 60 officers involved in the latest search. Police were pictured using a JCB digger and cutting-edge ground-penetrating radar scanners. One of the places searched was a cottage once lived in by prime suspect Brueckner. The fresh search was reportedly prompted by new information about their suspect. Convicted paedophile Brueckner is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany. He was caged over the 2005 rape of an elderly woman at her Praia da Luz home but he has denied any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine.
