'Narender surrendered to Adani, China': Congress ups ante with fresh jibe at PM

The Congress on Thursday upped the ante with its " Narender-surrender " jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi , alleging that he "surrendered" before billionaire Gautam Adani as well as to China. There was no immediate response from the government or the Adani Group over the Congress's accusations but the business conglomerate has, in the past, rejected all such allegations against it. Congress leader Ajoy Kumar said the duo of Adani and Modi has left behind the Jai-Veeru duo from the film "Sholay". "The process of Narendra Modi's surrender before (US President Donald) Trump has happened after many years of practice," Kumar said at a press conference at the Indira Bhawan, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters here. "Wherever Narendra Modi goes or whatever Adani wants -- he gets the contract.... The diplomatic moves of India's prime minister have helped industrialist Mr A to expand his international business interests in ports, airports, electricity, coal mining and weapons," the Congress leader claimed and cited examples from various countries. Live Events "Narenderji has hurt his country's relations with her neighbours as well as with other countries by brazenly promoting Mr A's ambitions. The growth of the Mr A Group outside India over the past decade or so has been closely aligned with the diplomatic efforts of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he alleged. Many of "Mr A's" international deals were struck soon after Modi's official visits to certain countries or after heads of government visited India, Kumar claimed. Alleging that Modi had also "surrendered" before China, he said "Narender-Surrender" must apologise to the country for his "clean chit" to the neighbouring country on its invasion of Indian territory in 2020. Kumar claimed that China has vowed to stand by Pakistan in defending its "sovereignty" and "territorial integrity", and called it its "iron-clad friend". "China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, recently gave a statement that his country would continue to stand by Pakistan in upholding its sovereignty, territorial integrity and national independence. China has supplied arms worth over USD 20 billion to Pakistan," Kumar claimed. The Congress had said on Wednesday that it is wrong to think that "Narendra Modi is India and India is Narendra Modi", as it slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its criticism of Rahul Gandhi over his dig at the prime minister, and doubled down on the "Narender-surrender" jibe. Gandhi had said in Bhopal on Tuesday that "as soon as Trump signalled from there, picked up the phone and said, 'what are you doing Modiji? Narender, surrender'.... And Modiji obeyed Trump's orders with Ji Huzoor'". Urging people to remember 1971, Gandhi said back then, a phone call had not come but the United States had sent its 7th fleet, weapons and an aircraft carrier, but prime minister Indira Gandhi did not surrender and said she would go by national interest. Referring to the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Gandhi said they are habituated to writing "surrender letters" since Independence. The BJP has accused Gandhi of insulting the armed forces with his "surrender" barb at Modi, saying it amounted to undermining the success of Operation Sindoor. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Congress leader has surpassed even Pakistan's army chief, prime minister and the terror masterminds based there in speaking in support of the neighbouring country, and alleged that his jibes reflect a sick and dangerous mindset. Gas price index up 19% in May; IGX trade volume dips 5% on weak power demand

New Delhi: India's Gas IndeX of India (GIXI) for May 2025 rose 19 per cent year-on-year to ₹1,016 or USD 11.9 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), tracking an increase in international spot gas benchmarks, according to data released by the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) . The GIXI recorded a 5 per cent decline on a month-on-month basis due to lower demand and higher supply. High inventory levels among marketers, who had anticipated increased demand from the power sector, coincided with lower actual power demand following an early monsoon and a peak of 231 GW, lower than the expected 260 GW-plus. Internationally, the Dutch TTF benchmark rose 16 per cent year-on-year to USD 11.7 per MMBtu and was up 2 per cent month-on-month. The West India Marker (WIM) climbed 8 per cent year-on-year to USD 13 per MMBtu ex-Dahej. The US Henry Hub (HH) benchmark rose 43 per cent year-on-year to USD 3.45 per MMBtu. Trade volumes on IGX declined 5 per cent year-on-year to 4.7 million MMBtu or 118 million standard cubic metres (MMSCM) in May 2025. Free market gas accounted for 80 per cent of the traded volume, while 20 per cent was High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) domestic gas traded at the ceiling price of ₹861 or USD 10.04 per MMBtu. A total of 140 trades were executed in May. The most active delivery points were Chhara for free market gas and Mallavaram for ceiling price gas. Other active points included Dahej, Mhaskal, KG Basin, Bokaro, Bhadbhut, Hazira, Dabhol, and Ankot. Of the total trades, 44 were in Day-Ahead contracts, 39 in Daily, 24 each in Monthly and Fortnightly, 8 in Weekly, and 1 in Intraday contracts. Exchange-managed deliveries amounted to 7.9 million MMBtu, or approximately 6.4 MMSCMD. Shapoorji Pallonji Energy Private Limited joined IGX as a proprietary member during the month, taking the total number of registered members to 50. GIXI-West for May was recorded at ₹1,025 or USD 12 per MMBtu, 1 per cent higher than the all-India index. GIXI-East and GIXI-South were lower by 13 per cent and 8 per cent respectively, owing to transmission and tax differentials. GIXI-Dahej was steady month-on-month at ₹1,016 or USD 11.9 per MMBtu, trading at a 9 per cent or USD 1 per MMBtu discount to WIM ex-Dahej. IGX currently offers trades at 17 delivery points comprising five LNG terminals, nine domestic gas field landfall points, and three pipeline interconnection points. It supports trading in seven spot contracts—intraday, day-ahead, daily, weekday, weekly, fortnightly, and monthly (up to 12 months)—and two long-duration contracts of 3 and 6 months linked to benchmarks such as GIXI, JKM, WIM, and Dated Brent.

Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs to rein in costs as tariff uncertainity looms

Procter & Gamble said on Thursday it would cut 7,000 jobs, or about 6 per cent , of its total workforce over the next two years, as part of a new restructuring plan to counter uneven consumer demand and higher costs due to tariff uncertainty. The world's largest consumer goods company also plans to exit some product categories and brands in certain markets, executives said at a Deutsche Bank Consumer Conference in Paris, adding the program could likely include some divestitures without giving detail. The Pampers maker's two-year restructuring plan comes when consumer spending is expected to remain pressured this year, and global consumer goods makers including P&G and Unilever brace for a further hit to demand from even higher prices. "This is not a new approach, rather an intentional acceleration of the current win in the increasingly challenging environment in which we compete," executives said. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on trading partners have roiled global markets and led to fears of a recession in the U.S., the biggest market for P&G. The company imports raw ingredients, packaging materials and some finished products into the U.S. from China. Trump's trade war has cost companies more than USD 34 billion in lost sales and higher costs, a Reuters analysis showed, a toll that is expected to rise. In April, the Tide detergent maker said it would raise prices on some products and that it was prepared to pull every lever in its arsenal to mitigate the impact of tariffs. Pricing and cost cuts were the main levers, CFO Andre Schulten had said then. On Thursday, Schulten and P&G's operations head Shailesh Jejurikar acknowledged that the geopolitical environment was "unpredictable" and that consumers were facing "greater uncertainty." The company had about 108,000 employees as of June 30, 2024, and said the job cuts would account for roughly 15 per cent of its non-manufacturing workforce. P&G added that the restructuring plan would help simplify the organizational structure by "making roles broader" and "teams smaller". The plans to divest certain brands will also help adjust its supply chain in order to reduce costs, P&G said.
