Levy speaks out on Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham sacking

The National7 hours ago
The Tottenham owner and chairman took the difficult call to get rid of the former Celtic manager despite the fact he had just won them the Europa League, delivering on his promise he always wins a trophy in his second season.
However, the Premier League giants had also finished 17th in the league, just one place above the relegation zone, which is well below their lofty ambitions.
Levy decided he had to part ways with the Aussie, who only lasted two years in North London after heading there from Glasgow.
The businessman has now spoken on the sacking and explained his thinking.
Read more:
'Ultimately, the decision sits with me, but it's always a collective decision,' he told the Overlap.
'We have a board of directors, but under the board, we have a group of technical staff, and they advise.
'We had to explain the decision to part ways with Ange. Ange just won us a trophy – a European trophy – highly significant and he's always going to be in our history.
'However, we couldn't lose sight of the fact that we finished 17th in the league, we lost 22 Premier League games, and it's impossible for Tottenham to be in that position.
'And so we had to take the emotion out of it and we had to give some data points as to why we decided to do what we did.'

Man Utd make bid for Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko after Newcastle's improved offer

The race for the highly-rated 22-year-old is heating up as the Premier League clubs battle to bolster their front lines. PA understands Newcastle made a second approach to Leipzig after seeing an initial offer – reportedly worth 75million euros (£65.1m) with a further 5m euros (£4.3m) in potential add-ons – rejected last week. That improved offer of at least 80m euros (£69.5m) has been followed by Ruben Amorim's United pursuing their long-standing interest with a bid of their own. The Red Devils have tabled a proposal worth a reported of 75m euros (£65.1m) plus a potential 10m (£8.7m) in add-ons as they seek to take Sesko to Old Trafford.

Philippe Clement lifts lid on Rangers boardroom 'total chaos' and reveals what really angered him about sacking

The Belgian was bulleted from his position following a disastrous Scottish Cup exit but at a time of turmoil for the club Sacked Ibrox gaffer Philippe Clement claims his bid to rebuild Rangers was wrecked by 'total chaos' in the boardroom. ‌ The Belgian boss was hired to replace Michael Beale in October 2023 - but he lasted just 16 months before being axed himself. ‌ A catastrophic Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen's Park in February left the former Club Brugge and Monaco gaffer clinging to his job. ‌ But the final straw came a fortnight later as Clement's side slipped up again at home to St Mirren, putting the nail in coffin of their already faint title hopes. However, the 51-year-old believes his chances of surviving in the Ibrox hot seat were undone by turmoil around the directors' table. Gers' preparations last summer were wrecked by a construction cock-up which forced the team to play the first month of the campaign at Hampden, while the club was left rudderless when both chairman John Bennett and chief exec James Bisgrove quit within weeks of each other. "That's the frustration, the frustrating part of the story," Clement told BBC Scotland's Sacked in the Morning podcast. "The first seven months, everybody was really happy about what happened in the club. There was a big change. But after that, a lot of things changed in the club and it became quite chaotic. ‌ "I never had a club or saw a club where you don't have all these positions filled during a season for six or seven months. So a lot of things happened." Clement - who has since been replaced by Russell Martin - expected to be given funds to challenge Celtic having pushed the Parkhead side close the previous season before a late collapse. But he was shocked to learn the budget had been slashed having been given orders from the board to sell his top earners before he could buy in fresh recruits. ‌ "They said we know we don't have the money that Celtic has for the moment," Clement added. "It was quite an old squad. So we know we're going to need four, five, maybe six transfer windows to gain money and to close this gap with Celtic. "And it starts with getting young players in, develop them, make them better and sell them to build the club again where it should be. "The board was afraid to say these things towards the fans because they were already very angry about the stadium issue. I was the only one speaking in the club because there was nobody any more." ‌ Clement lifted a League Cup just two months after arriving in Glasgow but was left playing catch-up on Celtic for the remainder of his time at Rangers. "There was a big difference about everything around the team, even maybe a bigger difference than on the pitch," he said, when asked about the gap between the Old Firm clubs. "In preparation, in everything around the club, Celtic is much more organised than Rangers. And I was there for sure in these seven months where there was total chaos at Rangers." ‌ Clement was binned with his team 13 points adrift of the Hoops. But he was left unhappy after learning through the media rather than the club that his time was up. "It felt really empty," Clement said. "I was also angry that moment because all the journalists knew before me. "I got a lot of messages from Scotland, England and Belgium even, before I get a message from the club, so I was not happy with that. That's not good. "I told them also that it was totally disrespectful, that moment. But I felt really empty because you build something together in your full day and night with everything in the club. "And I had to do much more than you normally should do as a manager in the months before when these positions were not filled in."

Hibs head coach David Gray has confirmed the club are advancing in transfer talks for ex Birmingham City and Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley. The experienced Scotland international was spotted watching on from the stands in Hibs' Europa League second round qualifier against FC Midtjylland last week. Gray's side are a man short at the back after Lewis Miller sealed a move to Blackburn Rovers in a seven figure deal, with a replacement being sought for a man who played centre half plus right back. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A regular for the national team, Hanley was with Blackburn Rovers for several seasons before earning his big break through a move to Newcastle United on a five year deal in 2016. He was signed under the tenure of Rafa Benitez and took the number five shirt previously worn by Georginio Wijnaldum, but left a year later for Norwich City, where he was at until earlier this year when signed by Birmingham City. Grant Hanley to Hibs latest Hanley is now a free agent and ahead of the Conference League third round qualifier against Partizan Belgrade in Serbia, Gray says a possible deal has moved forward. He said when asked about the ex Newcastle and Birmingham man: 'That's obviously one that's been touted a lot around the place. 'We are in advance talks with that one. We're hoping to see what that will look like. Again, he's someone that has played at a very high level. The right type of people. I speak about that all the time, that we're trying to bring the right type of people in the football club.' On replacing Miller, Gray added: 'I think, of course, we wish him all the very best. I feel he deserves his move. He's done really well. A player I've enjoyed working with. When you think to when he joined, the player he is now, the hard work that he's went through, he deserves his move. I wish him all the very best. I think he'll be successful with all these attributes he's got, down in England. It works for everybody involved, which is always good. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Lewis Miller to Blackburn Rovers verdict 'In terms of Lewis moving on and what that looks like, I think it's more a case of looking at the squad and seeing how it looks, and what we're looking at. We have to look at defensive options, players like Lewis attract attention. We've got a lot of players in the group that, whilst the window's open, we need to be ready to be proactive and we have been. We are working hard at that at the minute, but clearly, he's someone that will need replacing because of the attributes he's got. 'I think you're always looking at how strong can you make it. Whilst the window's open, you need to be ready for that, I do think we're still looking. There are still areas in which if it comes up and we think it can improve us, then we'll look to do that. Then you think about what we've done last season. I always keep saying it's the right type of people. We're not just bringing in numbers, there's a lot of hard work going on. We'll continue to go on to make sure we finish the window strongly.'
