India's active Covid-19 cases rise to 2,710; 7 deaths reported, most with comorbidities
NEW DELHI: India's active Covid-19 caseload has climbed to 2,710, with 1,170 patients discharged, according to the Union Health Ministry. Seven fatalities were reported across multiple states, with most deaths linked to underlying health conditions, as per state-wise data.

Delhi reported the death of a 60-year-old woman with acute intestinal obstruction post-laparotomy. Covid-19 was an incidental finding in her case. Gujarat also reported one death, with further details awaited.
In Karnataka, a 70-year-old man died due to acute cardiorespiratory arrest, acute encephalopathy, seizures, severe anaemia, and thrombocytopenia. He had multiple comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, and ischemic heart disease.
His Covid status is pending RT-PCR confirmation.
Maharashtra reported two deaths: a 67-year-old man with acute respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, and comorbidities, and a 21-year-old man with diabetic ketoacidosis and lower respiratory tract infection. One of the deaths was part of a reconciliation process.
Punjab reported the death of a 39-year-old man with Hepatitis B and acute respiratory syndrome, while Tamil Nadu recorded the death of a 60-year-old man with diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease.
Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases at 1,147. Reconciliation of mortality data is ongoing. Bihar is yet to release its daily update.
Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, said on Friday that the Centre is fully prepared to handle any possible situation.
'Our Central Health Department and AYUSH Ministry are on high alert and closely monitoring developments across all states.

We've held discussions with health and AYUSH secretaries and concerned ministers,' Jadhav told ANI.
He added that preparations are underway and infrastructure built during previous Covid waves—such as oxygen plants and ICU beds—has been reviewed.
'Our health systems are well-equipped and ready to deal with any eventuality,' he said.

Most cases in these states: Kerala tops the Covid tally chart with 1400 active cases, followed by Maharashtra (485 cases) and Delhi (436 cases). Covid death in Delhi: A 60-year-old woman who tested positive for Covid-19 died in Delhi, officials said on Saturday. This is the first fatality in Delhi amid the current surge in cases. "The woman was suffering from acute intestinal obstruction post-laparotomy. The Covid-19 finding was incidental," PTI news agency quoted an official.

No need to fear COVID-19, thanks to acquired immunity, says Soumya Swaminathan
There is no reason to fear COVID-19 due to the immunity people have acquired over the last few years, said Soumya Swaminathan, former chief scientist of the World Health Organization, and chairperson of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation. According to the data from the Union Health Ministry as of May 31, India saw an increase of 685 active COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases to 3,395 since January. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of Scope 2025, an international conference on endoscopy organised by GEM Hospital in Chennai, Dr. Swaminathan explained that the current surge is driven by subvariants of the Omicron strain. While the virus may have undergone some mutations, the overall strain remains the same. India and other Southeast Asian countries have reported a similar trend in slight increase of COVID-19 cases. She said that the widespread use of vaccines, and in some cases, booster shots, has provided immunity. As a result, even if someone contracts the virus, symptoms will likely be mild, such as a two-day fever, cough, headache, and body aches. Dr. Swaminathan also recommended wearing masks when experiencing symptoms like cough, cold, or fever to prevent transmission to others. She warned that high-risk individuals — such as seniors, and those with diabetes, hypertension, or cardiac and lung conditions — should remain cautious. She urged everyone to continue following basic precautions, including wearing masks, washing hands thoroughly upon entering the home, and avoiding spitting in public.
