Blackhawks' Defenseman Chosen for Mid-Season Rookie All-Star Team

Yahoo30-01-2025
It is a good time to check in on the rookies just past the halfway point of the season as they are not only the future of the NHL, but the present. Some of the rookies have really impressed and are in a tight race for the Calder Trophy, while others might not get the respect they've already earned.
NHL's official site released their Rookie All-Star Team at the time when All-Stars would normally be selected to participate in the All-Star Skills Competition and All-Star Game. This all-rookie team features three forwards, two defensemen, and a goalie. Manning one of the points in the selections is Nolan Allan of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Allan might not be a name that many fans of hockey know, but that's because he is a defensive defenseman on one of the worst teams in the league. Connor Bedard also gets a ton of the attention directed towards Chicago.Allan didn't see any NHL action prior to this season and has played 40 games so far. There have been a lot of defensemen used in Chicago, but he has held firm on the back-end as he kills penalties as well.
As a rookie defenseman, Allan isn't getting as much playing time as he will down the line with only 15:10 per game this season. He's only 21 years old, but he knows how to throw his body around with 55 hits and knows how to sacrifice the body with 41 blocked shots.
Defensive defensemen aren't given as much recognition for their play as offensive players, but what Allan has done and can do is still impressive. There are some other defensemen who could challenge for the all-rookie team by the end of the season with more games, but the closest contenders to Allan's spot on the mid-season team is Isaiah George, Albert Johansson, or Owen Pickering.
Allan is second to Lane Hutson (also among the selections) in points from rookie defensemen with eight (one goal). Head coach Anders Sorensen said that "...he's got Niklas Hjalmarsson-type qualities in his game...so that should be a really good fit for some of these other guys."
With where Allan's game is at and the role he plays, the 32nd overall pick from the 2021 draft is set to have his role increased over the next few seasons and be a great shut-down d-man on the Blackhawks for years to come.

Eight Florida Gators named to 2025 Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team

The 2025 edition of the coaches' preseason All-SEC Teams was released on Tuesday and included eight members of Florida football's roster for the upcoming campaign. Redshirt senior offensive linemen Jake Slaughter and Austin Barber both earned first-team honors to lead the Gators, while redshirt senior defensive lineman Caleb Banks, senior kicker Trey Smack, and redshirt senior long-snapper Rocco Underwood were second-team mentions. Sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Eugene Wilson III and edge defender Tyreak Sapp round out the nominations on the third team. For Slaughter, this is his seventh first-team nomination and second for an All-SEC first team while Barber earned his second preseason All-SEC first-team nomination after being named to the media's first-team selection following SEC Media Days. Banks earned his third preseason All-SEC second-team honors entering his third season in Gainesville, Smack got his second preseason All-SEC second-team call for both the place kicker and kickoff specialist positions, and Underwood also earned his second All-SEC second-team nomination following his Patrick Mannelly Award-winning campaign in 2024. Lagway got his first All-SEC honor after not being chosen by the media following SEC Media Days while Wilson, who is coming off a season-ending injury last fall, is looking to pick up where he left off. Sapp was named to the preseason Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List following a season in which he led the Gators with seven sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss for 48 yards while tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles. Kansas City Chiefs DE Ashton Gillotte appreciates growth in his special teams role

During his press conference on Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte shared his appreciation for any opportunities on special teams. "I think (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator) (Dave) Toub has put me in a lot of positions to work and compete," said Gillotte, "and that is kind of the bridge of trust there, him putting me in a position just to be able to work or put my talents on display. Then just doing it from there." Gillotte spent four seasons at Louisville. Last season, he earned Second-team All-ACC honors and led the Cardinals with 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, starting 12 games and recording 43 total tackles. He embraces the chances to play on special teams because it gets him in the game aside from the defensive game plan. "Yeah, obviously. Anything that gets you on the field is a good thing, and special teams is a big part of our game. Obviously, we want to get our special teams to be number one or number two type, because it is a phase of the game," said Gillotte, "The hidden phase or lost phase. Us being good on that will help set up our offense better (and) our defense better. So, really, any way we can contribute." The Chiefs have solid depth on the defensive line, but with recent injuries, it could put Gillotte in more packages for Steve Spagnuolo and less time on special teams during the season.

The unveiling of Sue Bird's bronze statue outside Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday was more than a celebration of a Hall of Fame career. For Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers, it was another reminder of how one of basketball's greatest leaders continues to shape her own path. Bueckers, 23, has long been clear about who provided her model for success. "She was somebody I aspired to be when I was young and growing up," Bueckers told before facing the Las Vegas Aces. "I followed in her footsteps to UConn, and I'm following in her footsteps again by making it to the WNBA." The connection between Bird and Bueckers goes beyond shared school colors. Bird has served as a mentor since Bueckers' college days, offering advice and perspective during critical moments. "She's just been there every single time I reached out with questions," Bueckers said. "She has been a huge part of my development—not just as a player, but as a person." She has praised Bueckers' poise, versatility, and ability to impact games on both ends of the floor, often pointing to her as a natural successor in the line of elite UConn guards. As Bueckers has transitioned to the WNBA, Bird has publicly acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence that she has the skill and mentality to succeed. Both players' careers were shaped at UConn, where Bird won two national championships and helped establish the program's dynasty. Bueckers has said Bird's example was part of her decision to play in Storrs, calling her the blueprint for the career she envisioned. The statue, the first for a WNBA player, is a permanent reminder of her impact on the sport. For Bueckers, the symbolism resonates as she begins her own career. "The way she brings people together... She demands a lot, but she supports you and challenges you at the same time," Bueckers said. "That's something I really admire and something I want to embody as a player myself." Bird's likeness in bronze reflects her place in history. For Bueckers, it also serves as a reminder of the standard she is chasing every time she takes the court.
