PM Anwar: Tengku Zafrul delivers results, will stay on as minister despite Umno exit

KUALA LUMPUR (June 1): Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's decision to quit Umno and express his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will not affect his position as Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
The prime minister said Tengku Zafrul has been performing his ministerial duties well, especially in matters related to investments.
'Tengku Zafrul is a minister who has carried out his responsibilities very well. Our investments amount to hundreds of billions, many of which have been handled through his efforts.
'So, his position as minister is not affected, and we want him to continue his duties as his performance has been good, and the country needs his contribution,' Anwar told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025 here today.
Also present at the event were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, PBAKL 2025 organising chairman Mohd Khair Ngadiron and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Dr Hazami Jahari.
Anwar, who is also PKR president, said the party has yet to formally discuss Tengku Zafrul's intention to join, and any decision would be made after consulting coalition partners in the MADANI government.
'He (Tengku Zafrul) has opted to apply (to join PKR). We haven't discussed anything yet… let him complete his Hajj pilgrimage first, and let's not jump to unhealthy conclusions.
'When someone makes a decision, we respect it. So, on behalf of PKR, of course we will need to discuss it with our fellow government coalition parties and decide what's best,' he said.
On Friday (May 30), Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as Umno Supreme Council member, Kota Raja division chief and party member. At the same time, he expressed his intent to join PKR.

Anwar receives Aidiladha greetings from Iranian president, reaffirms support for Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR: In the spirit of Aidiladha, which upholds the values of sacrifice and justice, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the steadfastness of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in defending the plight of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. In a phone call with Masoud earlier Thursday (June 5), Anwar said Malaysia stands firmly with Iran in strongly rejecting all forms of occupation and the ongoing expulsion of Gaza's people, who continue to be oppressed by the Zionist Israeli regime. "I also conveyed that Malaysia's foreign policy is not dictated by external powers but is built on national interests and firm convictions. "Malaysia condemns the hypocrisy of certain countries that claim to uphold human rights yet silently allow mass killings without any dignified action. Silence in the face of oppression is a betrayal of universal human values," he said in a Facebook Thursday. Anwar said Masoud also extended Aidiladha greetings for the celebration on Saturday (June 7). Khaled: Obsolete thinking among certain Malay leaders a greater threat to community
KUALA LUMPUR: Outdated, backward and obsolete thinking among certain Malay leaders poses the greatest threat to the community, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said many of these leaders failed to recognise that Generations X, Y, Z and Alpha were no longer easily swayed by emotional politics used merely as a means to gain power. "We need to practise politics that are rational and grounded in the best values. Sentimentalism will not help us win in the arenas of technology, tariffs, the advancement of knowledge or the future business world. "The Malays must possess strong competitiveness, knowledge and superior skills. Only then can we become a great and respected nation," he said, in response to the formation of a new movement to unite the Malay community under a single umbrella by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Khaled also said the rights and interests of the Malays remained secure. "No one will ever infringe upon the rights and interests of our people. These have long been enshrined in the Federal Constitution and safeguarded by our wise Malay rulers," he added. Yesterday, Mahathir said the formation of the movement was not about politics but a collective response to what he described as the growing challenges faced by the Malays. He said the secretariat aimed to unify Malays across political lines under a single movement, noting that fragmented efforts had only led to division and weakness.
