Muscat: Tourism authorities from Goa, a state in western India with coastlines stretching along the Arabian Sea, expressed their interest in bolstering bilateral tourism ties between the two countries with a successful roadshow last week.
A 'Goa Evening' and road show was conducted at the Crowne Plaza Muscat, where attendees experienced a glimpse of Goa's vibrant culture through traditional folk performances, a destination presentation, and a networking dinner.
The Goa Tourism roadshow was aimed at reinforcing its commitment to promoting the then-Portuguese colony which has the largest number of beautiful coastal tourism options as a premier tourism destination in the Middle East.
The roadshow served as a strategic platform to engage with key travel trade professionals, tour operators, media representatives, and potential investors, highlighting Goa's diverse tourism offerings ranging from popular stretches at Baga and Palolem to those in laid-back fishing villages such as Agonda, and the preserved 17th-century churches and the area's tropical spice plantations, and emerging opportunities.
The event held under Kuldeep Arolkar, Managing Director GTDC, and leading stakeholders from Oman's travel and hospitality industry, witnessed an overwhelming response from the Oman tourism fraternity as well as wanderlusts.
The Goa Tourism delegation was accompanied by the members of the Travel Trade Association led by TTAG President Jack Sukhija, and others comprising charter operators, hoteliers, and travel agents.
The roadshow featured an engaging networking session, where key discussions revolved around new tourism initiatives, including regenerative tourism, eco-tourism circuits, and the promotion of niche segments such as wellness tourism, adventure tourism, and cultural heritage experiences.
Tavishi Bahl, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Muscat, addressed the gathering where she highlighted the growing tourism and cultural ties between Oman and Goa.
Speaking to the Observer, Rohan A Khaunte, Goan Minister of Tourism said, "Goa is evolving beyond its beaches to offer a diverse and enriching tourism experience from the serene charm of our hinterlands and spiritual circuits to world-class infrastructure for MICE tourism. Through this roadshow in Oman, we aim to strengthen ties with the Middle East market, inviting travellers and businesses alike to discover Goa's vibrant culture, natural beauty, and growing potential as a holistic tourism destination."
"Goa continues to position itself as a global tourism hub, offering diverse experiences beyond its beaches. Goa has always been a melting pot of cultures, offering visitors a blend of rich heritage, serene landscapes, and immersive experiences. Through strategic international engagements, we aim to strengthen tourism partnerships, enhance connectivity, and showcase our commitment to regenerative and sustainable tourism,' said Kedar Naik, Director of Tourism.
Kuldeep Arolkar, Managing Director of GTDC, in his keynote address, emphasised Goa's position as a world-class tourism destination and highlighted new initiatives under the Regenerative Tourism model. "Oman is an important market for Goa, and we are committed to strengthening tourism collaboration between our regions. The response from Oman's travel trade community has been overwhelmingly positive. We look forward to welcoming more visitors from Oman and working closely with stakeholders to create customized experiences that showcase Goa's rich cultural and natural heritage"

Fernandes rejects Al Hilal offer to stay at Man Utd
LONDON: Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned down the opportunity to join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in order to keep playing "at the highest level", he said on Tuesday. The Portuguese midfielder admitted that he had considered the move, which media reports said was worth four times his current salary, after being contacted by Al Hilal's president. "There was that possibility, the president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it," Fernandes, who is preparing to face Germany with Portugal, told reporters on Tuesday. "It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future." Fernandes ultimately decided to stay at United and said he was motivated by his desire to continue playing at the top level and encouraged by his family and the club's coach Ruben Amorim. "I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so," Fernandes added. "I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. "I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. "It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision." The 30-year-old Fernandes scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season, winning the club's Player of the Year award for the fourth time. However, it was a season to forget for the team, as they finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest league finish in half a century, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. — AFP

Saudis in 'difficult' talks to keep Ronaldo next season: PIF source
Saudi officials are in "difficult" talks to keep Cristiano Ronaldo in the country, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told AFP on Thursday, after the star footballer suggested he was leaving Al Nassr. The Portuguese superstar, whose arrival in 2023 heralded a rush of late-career players to the oil-rich country, could transfer to Al Hilal and feature at the upcoming Club World Club, the source said. "There is an ongoing difficult negotiation to convince Ronaldo to stay and play" in the Saudi Pro League next season, said the source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a major investor in Saudi football. "First option is a transfer to Al Hilal with an opportunity to feature in the FIFA Club World Cup or to Asia champion Al Ahli," the source added. The oil-funded PIF, the sovereign wealth fund behind a number of big-ticket Saudi investments, controls a group of Pro League clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli. Ronaldo posted "This chapter is over" hours after the Saudi Pro League wrapped up this week with Al Nassr finishing third and trophy less once again. A special transfer window opens from June 1-10 to allow the 32 teams involved in the newly expanded Club World Cup to sign players. Last week, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said "there are discussions" over the former United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Sporting Lisbon star playing at the tournament in the United States from June 14. Portuguese forward Ronaldo, 40, joined Al Nassr in early 2023 from Manchester United and his contract expires at the end of next month. "Ronaldo's presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two years and a half. He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia," the PIF source said. Ronaldo's announcement comes just months after Brazilian star Neymar ended his injury-plagued 18-month stay in January, after playing just seven times for Al Hilal -- on a reported salary of around $104 million a year. Although Ronaldo was the Pro League's top scorer with 25 goals, he has been unable to win a Saudi or continental trophy with Al Nassr, who lost in the Asian Champions League semi-finals last month. Last year, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said he could end his career with Al Nassr, the Riyadh team favoured by a number of Saudi royals. Meanwhile, Ronaldo's great rival Lionel Messi will play at the Club World Cup with Inter Miami. During a recent interview with YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed, Infantino said: "And Ronaldo might play for one of the teams as well at the Club World Cup. "There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup... who knows, who knows. " Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's move, and the desert nation will host the World Cup in 2034.

UK signs Chagos deal with Mauritius to seal future of US-UK air base
LONDON: Britain signed a deal on Thursday to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, after a London judge overturned a last-minute injunction and cleared the way for an agreement the government says is vital to protect the nation's security. The multibillion-dollar deal will allow Britain to retain control of the strategically important US-UK air base on Diego Garcia, the largest island of the archipelago in the Indian Ocean, under a 99-year lease. The signing went ahead after a carefully choreographed ceremony was postponed when lawyers representing a British national born in the Chagos Islands were granted an interim injunction at the High Court in the early hours of Thursday. Judge Martin Chamberlain then lifted that injunction following a hearing, saying Britain's interests would be "substantially prejudiced" if the injunction were to continue. The government, which has been criticised by opposition parties for pursuing a deal they say is overly costly and would play into the hands of China, has long said the agreement is essential to secure the future of Diego Garcia. "The strategic location of this base is of the utmost significance to Britain, from deploying aircraft to defeat terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan to anticipating threats in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific," Prime Minister Keir Starmer told a news conference. "By agreeing to this deal now, on our terms, we're securing strong protections, including from malign influence, that will allow the base to operate well into the next century." The signing ends months of wrangling over the deal, the details of which were first announced in October, after the then-Mauritian leader Pravind Jugnauth was replaced by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, who raised concerns about it. It was further delayed after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump in January, with London wanting to give the new administration time to examine the details of the plan. In February, Trump indicated his backing for the deal. Ramgoolam welcomed the deal, saying it had been a long fight to get to this point. "With this agreement, we are completing the total process of decolonisation," Ramgoolam said in a televised broadcast, speaking in the local Creole language. "It's total recognition of our sovereignty on the Chagos, including Diego Garcia." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also welcomed the deal saying it "secures the long-term, stable and effective operation of the joint US-UK military facility at Diego Garcia". The injunction was the latest legal challenge to the deal in the last two decades brought by members of the wider Chagossian diaspora, many of whom ended up in Britain after being forcibly removed from the archipelago more than 50 years ago. — Reuters
