Australian hairdresser sparks debate after touching South African woman's hair: 'Oh my god'

Daily Mail17-07-2025
An Australian airdresser has faced backlash after sharing a video touching and playing with a cruise ship worker's braided hair.
Perth hairdresser and salon owner of Circles of Hair, Sharlene Lee, was on a seven-night cruise of the Greek Islands aboard the Ritz-Carlton earlier this month.
Ms Lee, who has been a salon owner for more than 30 years, befriended one of the yacht staff members - a woman from South Africa.
Ms Lee asked for permission to touch her hair and share their interaction in a video posted to social media.
'Oh my god your hair is beautiful, how long does it take for you to do this,' Ms Lee said.
The woman explained it took seven hours for her hairstylist with the help of her husband to complete the braids.
Fascinated with the woman's braids, Ms Lee was seen grabbing her hair, twirling it in her hands, and even stroking the woman's head.
'Omg it is so beautiful. Is it heavy? Oh my god, this is so good,' Ms Lee said as she tried to style the woman's ponytail into a bun.
Ms Lee said the braided style was not something she could do in her salon in Perth and asked the woman how much it costs to braid her head of hair.
To much of Ms Lee's disbelief, the woman said she paid a total of $30 to have her hair braided which included $10 for the synthetic hair and $20 for the labour.
Ms Lee asked a second female worker, who joined the conversation, why she did not have braids as she reached to touch her hair.
The worker dodged Ms Lee's touch and jokingly claimed horse hair was used to create her colleagues braids.
'Horse hair?,' Ms Lee said. 'Is this horse hair? Are you wearing a horse?'
The video ended with Ms Lee embracing the female worker, stating 'this girl, on the Ritz Carlton, has been amazing and she has the most amazing hair'.
Social media users were not impressed with Ms Lee's constant touching, with many claiming she was invading the woman's personal space.
'The lady clearly looks uncomfortable with her touching it over and over again! Touch it once and ask the question,' one person commented.
'White women should not be going around trying to touch the hair of people of colour. Is commonly known that this is disrespectful,' a second person wrote.
'Please don't reach over and touch peoples heads. You may say you got permission however I seen the second lady recoil when you took the liberty to try and touch her head,' a third said.
A fourth person added: 'She let you touch her hair which is fine but there's a point where you let go. Not keep flipping it upside down and on top of her head'.
A fifth person wrote: 'You're treating her as if she's part of an exhibition.'
Ms Lees fired back at the comments, claiming she asked the woman for permission before touching her hair and sharing the video to her social media account.
'She asked me to touch her hair and we then did a video,' she said.
'She absolutely gave me permission babe no questions about that.'
Many others backed Ms Lee and argued hairdresser's should be allowed to touch people's hair.
'Stop gas lighting. She is a hairdresser. It's innate to handle hair etc & most importantly she has consent!,' a second person commented.
'Y'all complaining about the hair touching but the lady doesn't seem uncomfortable at all,' a third chimed.

Inside Yahoo Serious' Hollywood downfall, from having the world at his feet in a $3 million mansion with his glamourous wife, to living out of his car at age 72

In 1988, an unknown bloke with a strange name from Australia's coal-mining heartland became the toast of Hollywood. Yahoo Serious blazed to international success with his film Young Einstein - which he directed and starred in - making $20 million at the box office. His professional relationship with his movie-making collaborator Lulu Pinkus - herself an acclaimed Australian actress and artist - had blossomed into romance. They married in 1989. Yahoo was on top of the world, with US media describing him as 'the next big thing from Down Under'. Which makes it all the more shocking that almost 40 years later, he is understood to be homeless in Sydney after being evicted for illegally squatting in a Palm Beach mansion. The 72-year-old was forced to flee with his Jack Russell terrier Jingle after police were called to help his landlord kick him out last Tuesday. Serious left an array of items behind in his ageing BMW sedan, which lies abandoned outside the Barrenjoey Road home, including a box of Jingle's medication, Ugg boots, a length of rope, an esky, and a cooking pan. It's understood he may still be on the city's northern beaches, given his longtime affinity for the area. In much better times, the then Mr and Mrs Serious owned a stunning house on Norma Road, which overlooked the postcard-perfect biscuit-coloured sands of Palm and Whale beaches. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home featured a pool with a stunning vista over the Pacific Ocean, which the couple sold in 2011 for $3.1 million. It's now estimated to be worth $5.8 million. Ms Pinkus and Serious split in 2007, after working together on Einstein, Reckless Kelly (1993) and Mr Accident (2000). On his website, Yahoo described Lulu as 'My partner in everything. She is an extremely versatile artist. Lulu works so silently that few people are aware that every character and every scene is so enriched by her critical eye and deft touch.' They divorced in 2010. It's not known why they split, but it appears to mark the beginning of Serious' downward spiral. Ms Pinkus has fared far better since the divorce, moving to a waterfront apartment overlooking Sydney's Double Bay, which she bought for $1.5 million in 2011. Today, it would be worth around $2.9 million. He once lived on Palm Beach's Norma Road, with stunning views over the Pacific Ocean She was not at home when Daily Mail approached her for comment on Tuesday. Serious, apparently attached to the northern beaches, rented an apartment in Avalon, which he was evicted from in 2020 for not paying rent - and was ordered to pay his landlord $15,000 in arrears. Not long after, he was homeless and living out of his car with his dog at Palm Beach, using its public shower block for his ablutions, when kindhearted local Margie Charlton took pity on the ageing former star. She told the Daily Mail in June that she invited him to live in the granny flat at the home of Palm Beach resident Charles Phillip Porter, for whom she held power of attorney. Ms Charlton, who lived in nearby Avalon, explained that while she took care of Mr Porter's cooking and cleaning, she wanted someone around to keep an eye on her ageing charge when she wasn't there. She said it was made clear to Serious that the offer only stood until Mr Porter was moved to a nursing home when his dementia advanced so far that living in his mansion was no longer feasible. She would then need Serious to vacate the property so she could sell it to help with Mr Porter's care. But when the time came, Serious not only refused to leave - he had moved from the basement into the main house. This kick-started an ugly battle between Serious and Ms Charlton in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which came to a head earlier this month. Serious was ordered to leave by August 4, and after an altercation between him and Ms Charlton on August 5 - in which he claimed she was being violent, which Ms Charlton vehemently denies - police turfed him out. In the days before his eviction, Serious claimed he was not squatting, but 'surviving'. It is understood he has been receiving treatment for Lymphoma, and indeed in the past year has appeared a shadow of his former self. 'I'm greatly improving, I was very close to death very recently … I just, I'm coming good but I'm having trouble with just, recall of day to day things,' he said during his tribunal appearance. In 2016, he underwent debilitating hip surgery. A quirky website registered to Serious in 2000 - the same year he tried and failed to sue the search engine Yahoo! for trademark infringement -provides an insight into his chaotic mind. After growing up as Greg Pead in NSW's Cardiff, near Newcastle, he explained on his site why he changed his name by deed poll in 1980. 'Each day there are a million choices to be made starting with what you put on your toast. You're born with a name but so what?' he said. 'You can choose every other aspect of your life, so why not your name?' In an undated interview posted to his site, Serious said he sees himself as, 'Nasty, untrustworthy, rude, unreliable, and childish'. A perhaps foreboding sentence uttered years before he left a trail of furious landlords in his wake. Now, grave fears are held for Serious and his dog Jingle's wellbeing. When he was forced to leave the Barrenjoey Road home, Sydney was suffering through days of cold rainstorms. Neighbours did not know where the fallen Hollywood star and his faithful dog went after being kicked out, and his car remained untouched a week after the eviction. A Daily Mail search of the Palm Beach area - where he once enjoyed prime position in the home he shared with Lulu - turned up no sign of Serious or Jingle.

Jodie Whittaker is far too good for this contrived Aussie thriller

You'd be forgiven for thinking you've seen something like this before, as the Australia-set thrillers have been coming to our screens thick and fast recently (see also The Last Anniversary, The Secrets She Keeps, Apples Never Fall). This one, which had a brief showing on Paramount+ in 2023 but is now on ITV1, stars former Doctor Who lead Jodie Whittaker. Sadly it's so lacklustre that Whittaker might wish that she'd opted to eat kangaroo genitalia on I'm a Celebrity with Ant and Dec instead. Since hanging up her sonic screwdriver, Whittaker has spread her wings in eclectic roles. She played an imprisoned single mother in gut-punch BBC drama Time and was the standout star of Netflix's factual drama Toxic Town. Here she loses her native Yorkshire tones to adopt an Australian accent. I'm no expert in Antipodean linguistics, but she does a decent job. Set on the stunning New South Wales coast, One Night follows three women – Tess (Whittaker), Simone (Nicole da Silva) and Hat (Yael Stone) – who remain haunted by a harrowing event during their teens. Twenty years later, Simone writes a thinly disguised novel about that fateful night. It reopens wounds in cathartic ways. There's the germ of an interesting drama here about trauma and truth, justice and healing. But whenever it looks about to emerge, it gets bogged down in repetitive flashbacks or clichéd contrivances. Supporting characters are uniformly ghastly – either leering small-town gangsters, spoilt kids or self-serving adults. Worst of all, there's a fatal flaw at the heart of the story. Simone stole Tess's tragedy for her own gain, yet we're supposed to sympathise as she makes her friend's pain all about her. Stretched out over six episodes, One Night moves with all the urgency of an asthmatic koala. With its ocean views and high-flying female friends, it's a try-hard Sydney spin on Big Little Lies. Whittaker is rawly convincing as a sexual assault victim whose repressed memories come bubbling to the surface. Tess is a mass of body issues: bulimic, covered in tattoos, prone to pulling her hair out. There's a wordless scene in the finale where Whittaker acts her socks off with facial expressions alone. It's just a shame the script isn't in the same league as her performance. One Night is available now on ITVX and begins on ITV1 on Saturday 16 August at 9.30pm

I'm A Celebrity icon tipped to return as hotly anticipated All Stars takes shape

The I'm A Celebrity… South Africa all-stars series is officially returning to ITV later in 2025—and several legendary jungle stars are in talks to come back. Starting in 2024, I'm A Celebrity… South Africa reunites old campmates from the ITV game show. This time, however, they're trading the Australian jungle for the desert. Last series saw the likes of Shaun Ryder, Gillian McKeith, Helen Flanagan, Phil Tufnell, and Jordan Banjo giving up luxuries for a gruelling challenge once more. The competition was ultimately won by Myleene Klass, who had originally finished second during the show's sixth series almost 20 years ago… but now, some more famous faces are coming for her crown. According to new reports, the latest former campmate being eyed up by bosses is none other than Ashley Roberts, whose first Jungle stint came in 2012. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. Speaking of a potential return from the Pussycat Doll, 43, a source teased that there could be some very memorable scenes from her, thanks to one key element of the camp. 'Producers would love to see Ashley head back to camp. She's warm, hilarious, and, of course, drop-dead gorgeous. 'Just like Myleene Klass, who won the first All Stars series back in 2023, Ashley had some iconic moments soaping up in the outback waterfall,' they told The Sun. But that's not all, as a former fifth-place contestant is also looking set to go back, just three years after first taking on the dreaded trials. Reportedly keen for more, comedian Seann Walsh, 39, previously used the programme to redeem himself after his Strictly Come Dancing kissing scandal four years prior. A TV insider explained to The Sun that trying to claw back some of his reputation was 'no mean feat', given that 'he'd been branded an aggressive gaslighter as a result of his fling with Katya (Jones) and his treatment of his girlfriend.' 'Yet he managed to emerge as one of the more popular campmates and actually finished in a respectable fifth place in the contest,' shared the source. 'Part of the reason why he came across comparatively well was because he went into I'm A Celebrity with an even bigger love rat. 'His entry into the camp was alongside former Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who was at the centre of an exclusive in The Sun revealing he had had an affair with a political adviser, Gina Coladangelo, in 2021.' But the rumour mill doesn't stop spinning there, as beloved King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp is also said to be close to signing on the dotted line with ITV bosses. As per The Sun, Harry, 78, who became the oldest-ever winner in 2018 and was paid £500,000 for his stint, will fly back out for round two in autumn before the series airs in the New Year. 'It's going to be a real coup,' a source told the paper. 'Harry is TV gold and was first on the list of wannabe celebrity contestants.' The football icon's win in the main series was watched by 11million people, with the nation reduced to tears as he was reunited with his wife, Sandra, on the bridge after, having frequently declared his love for her while in camp. Harry's first run for Jungle champ made him one of the programme's high earners, but the likes of Coleen Rooney and Nigel Farage still come out on top, having received a mega £1.5million for their signings. And Harry's people are remaining tight-lipped on his career plans currently, as a spokesperson for the sports star said in response to the rumours: 'This is speculation.' Meanwhile, there's another huge name already attached to the upcoming South Africa series… and it's Gemma Collins. The Towie star and TV personality, 44, is one of the most treasured personalities on British TV, and ITV is apparently hoping she'll boost viewing figures again this time around. Gemma infamously only managed three days in the Jungle when she was last on the show and made no secret of how much she hated every second. 'People who murder get treated better than this,' she famously said before quitting. 'That's the truth. Even a murderer gets fed three times a day.' Gemma's tears and tantrums gave social media a meme collection that still gets used today, so it's no surprise she's wanted back. A source told The Sun previously: 'She hated it first time round, but knows it would be TV gold for her fans if she gave it another go. 'The discussions could go either way, but signing her would be a huge win for execs.' For Gemma fans hoping she'll give I'm A Celebrity a second try, the recent rumours line up very nicely with comments the Dancing On Ice star made in 2019. Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, she said: 'I will never forget getting the call. Looking back, I don't feel I was ready for that show. I was new to TV; I was the underdog on Towie. 'I wasn't the best-looking girl, I didn't have a model figure, I was this car girl from Romford selling cars. I was being put in the Jungle, and in hindsight, I wasn't ready for it.' She continued: I felt hugely out of my depth—I was petrified. If I was to go back now, I've got more experience. I've got a tougher skin now, and I think that's where the GC came into play. If they asked me back, yes, I'd go back.' Things didn't get off to a good start when Gemma went into the jungle in 2014, firstly refusing to parachute into camp with the rest of her teammates. She then withdrew due to panic attacks and later said that her ex-boyfriend, Alexander Moss, had 'severely beaten' her the night before she joined. The reality star said that ITV advised against her entering at first, but Gemma insisted she didn't want to waste the opportunity of a lifetime. Alexander, now 44, was eventually jailed for 21 months in 2019. Gemma told the Everything I Know About Me podcast: '[There was] all the embarrassment of like, you know what the TV programmes were saying, 'Gemma Collins left the Jungle, she was hungry, she was this.' And it wasn't my fault. More Trending 'I can remember lying in my flat where I lived and just thinking, I just want to die. I haven't done anything wrong. I've left the Jungle because of something that happened to me.' ITV has been contacted for comment. I'm a Celebrity… South Africa will return to ITV1 and ITVX early next year.
