Loke: Taxi drivers to get language, etiquette training for VM2026
Loke said the initiative is crucial as the taxi industry is not merely about transportation, but also represents the heartbeat of public service and often forms tourists' first impression of the country.
He added that the government has also increased its contribution incentive to the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) from 10 per cent to 30 per cent to safeguard the safety and welfare of taxi drivers.
"These reforms are ongoing, and I will continue working with this industry to strengthen the public transport sector for the benefit of the people," he said in a Facebook post.
Earlier, Loke officiated the third annual general meeting of the Malaysia Taxi, Rental Car, Limousine and Airport Taxi Association (GTSM), which provided him an opportunity to hear directly from industry players.
As Transport Minister, he said meaningful reforms in the sector could only be achieved through close collaboration with stakeholders such as GTSM.

JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor government will study the management model of wet markets and hawker centres at Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre managed by Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) with a view to be adapted in the state. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the delegation's visit to the centre provided Johor with an opportunity to closely examine the hawker centre management model that is organised, clean and inclusive. He said the two-storey complex, which houses 302 wet market lots and 63 halal food stalls, serves as an important community centre and a symbol of the cultural heritage of the Malay community in Singapore. 'Among the interesting aspects are controlled rental rates to ensure reasonable food prices to ensure affordable food prices for consumers. 'It is also equipped with a strict hygiene grading system, mandatory training for food operators, as well as enforcement through technology such as closed-circuit television (CCTV), an e-fine system and the use of smart sensors (IoT) for sanitation and crowd monitoring. 'In addition, NEA also manages this centre through a social enterprise model, which is a non-profit operator focused on empowering small traders and maintaining social balance,' he said in a post uploaded on his Facebook page. In this regard, Onn Hafiz said the approach by NEA is considered highly relevant to be studied and adapted in Johor, especially in efforts to transform the management of public markets and hawker centres to be more efficient, sustainable and supportive of the people's economy, especially micro-traders, B40 and small business owners. He stressed that the state government would continue to be committed to studying and translating such best practices into local policies. In a Facebook post, she said the proposed new structure will split future EPF contributions into two components — a Flexible Savings account, which members can withdraw at any time, and an Income Savings account, which will be disbursed periodically until depleted. 'This is a key step towards ensuring members have a structured and reliable income during retirement,' she said. Lim stressed that the proposed changes will not affect the existing withdrawal rights of current EPF members. The new structure will apply only to new members after the implementation date, while existing members may choose to opt in voluntarily. She added that the proposal is still in its early stages and that the government is committed to gathering public feedback before proceeding. 'The Madani government will continue to listen to the people and conduct thorough engagement sessions before any implementation. The aim is clear — to help Malaysians manage their retirement savings in a more structured, fair and sustainable way,' she said. Loke: Malaysia's steady course gaining global recognition
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said Malaysia is "moving forward with a stable and prudent administrative direction" after securing a reduction in US tariffs on its products and mediating peace talks in Southeast Asia. "These achievements indicate that Malaysia is moving forward with a stable and prudent administrative direction, aiming to highlight its role as a 'middle power' and open new strategic opportunities for the country to advance," he said is a statement. The tariff reduction, from 25 per cent to 19 per cent, followed a 20-minute phone discussion between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump on July 31. "This outcome signifies a shift from previous threats of high tariffs to a more balanced result for Malaysia, easing economic tensions amid rising global protectionism," said Loke. "Malaysia's current tariff rate is now comparable to other countries in the region, and despite a higher trade surplus with the US, the new rate ensures the country remains competitive," he added. Concurrently, as the current Asean chair, Malaysia successfully mediated peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia. US President Donald Trump also confirmed his attendance at the upcoming Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Loke, whole is also the transport minister, said these achievements are seen as recognition of Malaysia's leadership within Asean and an indication of the country's rising standing in the regional strategic balance. "Under the Madani government's leadership, Malaysia has helped shape Asean into a more cohesive and influential regional organisation, revitalising the Asean Summit and encouraging dialogue and cooperation among regional nations," he said. He added that while the public may not closely follow diplomatic affairs, Malaysia's recent accomplishments demonstrate the country's strong diplomatic leadership. "Anwar has successfully positioned Malaysia as a trusted partner in regional security matters through a pragmatic, patient, and constructive approach, which has also reinvigorated Asean's philosophy of solving problems in our own way," he said.
