A year of ground-breaking achievements in organ transplants at KFSHRC
In 2024, KFSHRC's Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence (OTCoE) performed 882 organ transplants, a 6% increase from 2023, securing its position among the top ten transplant centres globally. The hospital's kidney transplant program has surpassed 5,000 transplants since its inception, demonstrating its unparalleled expertise in meeting complex medical demands with precision and care.
Building on this foundation of excellence, innovations in robotic surgery defined the year. The world's first fully robotic heart transplant, the world's first living donor left lobe liver transplant, and the Middle East's first robotic pancreas transplant offered transformative solutions for Type 1 diabetes patients. KFSHRC also performed the region's first liver transplant for MNGIE disease, contributing to the treatment of rare medical diseases.
Leadership in the paediatric transplant was another highlight of the OTCoE in 2024. Over 100 liver transplants, 80 kidney transplants, and two lung transplants, fostering hope for young patients and their families, placed KFSHRC among the world's top five centres for paediatric transplant procedures. Additionally, its kidney-paired exchange program set a new Guinness World Record with 135 exchanges, optimising donor-recipient matching.
Complementing these clinical advancements, KFSHRC maintained high survival and graft rates while expanding its specialized care offerings with a new liver transplant centre in Jeddah and the region's first Fatty Liver Clinic.
Strengthening its global presence and commitment to collaboration and innovation in speciality medicine, KFSHRC's OTCoE hosted the inaugural Minimally Invasive Organ Transplant Consensus Conference (MIOT.CC), bringing together 80 international experts to provide insights on innovative transplant techniques and set global standards in the field.
It is noteworthy that KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 20th globally in the list of the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centres for the second consecutive year and has been recognised as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2024 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, it was included in the World's Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine. On World Organ Donation Day KFSHRC announces 10 kidney exchange transplants completed in 48 hours
Riyadh: King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) successfully performed 10 kidney exchange transplants over two consecutive days, setting a global record for the highest number of such procedures conducted within a two-day span at a single center, coinciding with World Organ Donation Day on August 13. This milestone reinforces KFSHRC's position as a global leader in organ transplantation. This accomplishment reflects the hospital's high clinical readiness, the seamless coordination of its multidisciplinary medical teams, and its advanced systems for managing donor-recipient matching, alongside its extensive experience in executing complex transplant procedures. All of these factors enable KFSHRC to carry out this type of exchange transplantation with precision and within an exceptionally short timeframe. Paired kidney transplantation is an innovative approach that matches donor–patient pairs for mutual exchange. In this system, each donor gives a kidney to a patient with whom they have no direct relation, while their own relative receives a kidney from another donor. The process significantly improves compatibility rates and offers new hope to patients who face challenges in finding a suitable match within their families. Last year, KFSHRC celebrated a major milestone by completing more than 500 paired kidney transplants since the program was launched in 2011. Since launching its organ transplantation program in 1981, the hospital has successfully performed over 5,000 kidney transplants, placing it among an elite group of global transplant centers. In 2024, the hospital conducted 80 pediatric kidney transplants, the highest annual volume reported worldwide. This makes KFSHRC's pediatric kidney transplant program the largest of its kind compared to leading centers in the United States and Europe. This remarkable achievement underscores KFSHRC's commitment to its vision of being the provider of choice for specialized healthcare. By leveraging its skilled workforce, advanced technologies, and the integration of research and clinical programs, the hospital aims to deliver world-class treatment experiences both locally and globally, while enhancing the Kingdom's position as a leader in organ transplantation. KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers for the second consecutive year and has been recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2024 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, in the same year, it was ranked among the world's best 250 hospitals and included in the World's Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine. KFSHRC advances robotic surgery with a successful Ivor Lewis Esophagectomy
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh successfully performed a robotic Ivor Lewis esophagectomy, the first of its kind in the Middle East, on a 46-year-old male diagnosed with gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer located near the area where the esophagus meets the stomach. The patient regained mobility within two days of surgery, began oral intake by day five, and was discharged within ten days. This outcome demonstrates the effectiveness of the robotic approach in reducing pain, minimizing complications, and accelerating recovery compared to conventional surgery. The procedure was led by Dr. Khalid Aldaghri, Consultant in bariatric, upper gastrointestinal, and robotic surgery at KFSHRC. Utilizing the Ivor Lewis technique, a complex and technically demanding procedure involving two phases. The abdominal phase involved stomach mobilization and creation of a gastric conduit. This was followed by the thoracic phase, in which the diseased esophagus was resected and the conduit is robotically connected within the chest. Precision in the robotic system enabled surgeons to reach deep anatomical areas without large incisions, enhancing safety, reducing risks, and improving outcomes in one of the most complex cancer surgeries. Close collaboration among surgical, anesthesia, nursing, and technical teams was key to the procedure's success. All teams worked synchronously across every stage, from pre-op planning to post-op recovery. This approach reflects KFSHRC's multidisciplinary model of care, designed to improve patient outcomes and boost clinical efficiency. With its advanced features, the robotic surgery significantly enhanced the safety and accuracy of the esophagectomy by offering three-dimensional high-definition visualization, stable instrument control, and superior access within confined anatomical spaces. These capabilities enabled more precise dissection, better preservation of surrounding structures such as nerves and vessels and reduced intraoperative risks. The technology also made it physically easier for the surgeon to operate over an extended period. As a medical milestone, the success of this procedure opens the door for broader applications of robotic surgery at KFSHRC. It enables more patients to benefit from advanced surgical techniques and reinforces the institution's commitment to clinical innovation, safety, and effective alternatives to traditional surgical approaches. It is noteworthy that King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers for 2025. It was also recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East by Brand Finance in 2024 and was listed among the World's Best Smart Hospitals by Newsweek for 2025.
