Investigators revealed the gang used "a complex encrypted communications system to evade law enforcement, including the use of satellite terminals, hard-to-trace phones and a coded language".Police said the raids were months in the planning and saw 29 properties searched, 69 vehicles seized - including boats and jet skis - and cash and firearms recovered.Details of the raids shine a light on the complexity of the networks international drug smuggling gangs use to get narcotics into Europe, a major market for South American-based cartels.
Spanish police said the operation had "dismantled one of the largest criminal organisations dedicated to cocaine trafficking".The force also said it had identified a local network in the Canary Islands responsible for distributing the cocaine once it had arrived from South America. Footage of the raids published by Spanish police showed armed and masked officers raiding several houses, arresting suspects and carrying out searches.It is not the first time police have intercepted a large amount of cocaine bound for the Canary Islands, a Spanish territory and popular tourist destination lying around 100km (62 miles) off the west African coast.Police announced in December that they had intercepted a Venezuelan fishing boat 1,000 miles out at sea.It was discovered the vessel - which was so dilapidated it sank while being towed to shore - was carrying 3.3 tonnes of cocaine.

A young man who took his own life at a Sunshine Coast childcare centre was an OnlyFans creator with a long history of crime that included drug trafficking. Reubhan Mickeal Gary Ralph, 29, was Tasered by police several times before using a sharp implement to take his life at Habitat Peregian Springs at 6pm on Monday. Five staff members and six children were forced to lock themselves in a room while the terrifying incident played out. Ralph was a fly-in, fly-out worker and OnlyFans content creator who was involved in a local drug syndicate and had a string of serious convictions, court records show. He was previously charged with stalking two women, one of whom was an employee at Maroochydore Police Station. In October 2023, Ralph applied for bail in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court, where police prosecutor Senior Constable Mark Burrell told the court the case against him was 'strong'. 'They are serious offences, there are two separate victims, which is more than normal, and the second victim is an employee of Queensland Police,' he said. Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin described the allegations as 'quite chilling' and highlighted the disturbing pattern of behaviour. 'The second complainant involves another woman who is a civilian working at a police station, and it seems the defendant has now taken an interest in this female, who he could only know through seeing his required visits to the police station,' Mr McLaughlin said. He said Ralph was a 'menace' whose actions left women fearing for their safety. 'It's said he has been loitering around the police station, photographing this woman and making lewd comments towards her, to the extent that she is now worried about even attending work,' the magistrate said. 'In all my years as a magistrate I have never seen a person simultaneously charged with stalking two different women, one of whom he barely knows, it's bizarre, it speaks of a man who has real problems. 'In the very least before I could feel comfortable letting him back into the community I'd need some sort of psychiatric report.' Ralph also played a role in a cocaine syndicate between November 2021 and May 2022, conducting drug deliveries and debt collections stretching from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast. He later pleaded guilty to trafficking and drug possession. In July last year, Ralph made headlines for stealing a truck from a Gold Coast construction site and going on a destructive rampage, smashing into cars and even an ambulance while recording the chaos on his phone. Ralph had armed himself with a sharp object and began smashing a glass door at the childcare centre on Monday. A police officer, working covertly inside the building, quietly guided the children and staff out to safety after the group had locked themselves inside a room. Police attempted to negotiate with Ralph before trying to remove him, which included the deployment of Tasers several times. Police say Ralph began to self-harm and consequently sustained serious injuries. Attending police rendered first aid before other emergency services arrived; however, he was declared dead a short time later. The incident is being treated as mental health-related. No one else was injured in the incident.

Peruvian woman accused of trying to smuggle cocaine into Bali using sex toy
A Peruvian woman has been arrested in Bali after allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine into the Indonesian resort island using a sex toy and hiding drugs in her underwear, police said. The 42-year-old, identified only by her initials NS, arrived at Bali's international airport from Qatar on 12 August when authorities became suspicious. 'The customs officers suspected her behaviour, and after consulting with the police, they did a further check on her,' Bali police narcotics unit director, Radiant, who like many Indonesians has one name, told a press conference. The officers found 1.4kg (3.1lbs) of cocaine inside a sex toy hidden in her genitals and in her underwear. Police also accused her of smuggling dozens of ecstasy pills. The Peruvian woman told the police she was hired to transport the drugs to Indonesia by a man she met on the dark web in April in return for $20,000, said Radiant. The woman has been charged under Indonesia's harsh narcotics law and could face the death penalty if found guilty. Last month, a Bali court sentenced a 46-year-old Argentine to seven years in prison after she was found guilty of smuggling 244 grams of cocaine wrapped with a condom that she hid inside her genitals. Indonesia has some of the world's toughest drug laws. There are dozens of traffickers on death row in the country, including a 69-year old British woman convicted of smuggling cocaine. Indonesia last carried out executions in 2016, killing one Indonesian and three Nigerian drug convicts by firing squad.

Court rejects house arrest for Colombia ex-president Uribe during appeal
BOGOTA, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Bogota's superior court has overturned a judge's order that former Colombia President Alvaro Uribe be held on house arrest while he appeals convictions for bribery of a public official and abuse of process, the court decision showed on Tuesday. Uribe was placed on house arrest this month by Judge Sandra Liliana Heredia, who sentenced him to 12 years in a long-running case about his connections to former right-wing paramilitaries. Uribe has always maintained his innocence and is appealing the convictions, which he and his supporters have characterized as political persecution. The court said it has ruled "to leave without effect" the order for house arrest "until the corresponding criminal court of this tribunal defines the recourse of appeal." The conviction made Uribe the country's first ex-president to ever be found guilty at trial and came less than a year before Colombia's 2026 presidential election, in which several of Uribe's allies and proteges are competing for top office. Detractors of Uribe, 73, have celebrated his conviction as deserved comeuppance for a man who has been accused for decades of close ties with violent right-wing paramilitaries. Uribe, who was president from 2002 to 2010 and oversaw a military offensive against leftist guerrillas, was charged over allegations he ordered a lawyer to bribe jailed paramilitaries to discredit claims he had ties to their organizations.
