'Robocop' repaired: Roberto Soldic shifts into new gear ahead of long-awaited ONE 171 return
With confidence he's new and improved, Roberto Soldic returns Thursday at ONE 171 with the hope of quickly shaking the ghosts of his first two promotional appearances.
It's been a minute since he competed. Well, it's been more than a minute. It's actually been 21 months since Soldic (20-4) was knocked out by Zebaztian Kadestam in May 2023 – a shocking upset.
With nearly two more years of training and improving under his belt, Soldic, 30, aims to once again raise his reputation to that of what it was when he was one of the hottest free agents available in early 2023.
'I had so many opportunities after KSW,' Soldic recently told MMA Junkie. 'It was a really tough time for me in my career to decide where to go. Sometimes in life when too much opportunities (present), it's not good also. I don't know what to do. UFC called me. ONE Championship. KSW wanted that I stay there. For the mental thing, I think this was a really hard, hard time to decide what is good to choose. But I don't see anything wrong with ONE.'
Soldic's debut was underwhelming, as he was kneed in the groin by Murad Ramazanov and their bout was stopped just past the two-minute mark. With the encore against Kadestam be a knockout loss, Soldic understands the doubters are more populous.
'Sadly, in the beginning against Murad (Ramazanov), people talk like I lost the fight,' Soldic said. 'It's a no contest. The guy threw a hard knee in the groin and I couldn't continue. Sadly also after the Murad fight, six months later I had a fight with the former champion, former ONE champion Zebaztian (Kadestam). I can say I rushed. The first round I got him a couple times, and I want so hard to finish him. I use only my one weapon, the left hand. I didn't use everything I can get. I know I have more weapons in my skillset. I made a mistake. I threw the left hand to the body, and he caught me with a perfect elbow.
'I can say that out of 100 times, he do that one time maybe. I don't know. On that night, God was on his side. What can I say? You can see Demetrious (Johnson), also. He moved to ONE, he lost to former champion, even he with 12 or 13 UFC title defenses. Anything can happen on this level. The guys are really, really skilled and they are dangerous so I have to now have a chance to change this on Feb. 20 against a really tough guy, Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev. I'm really well prepared and with a new game plan and patience. I'll take this win.'
But Soldic thinks he's identified the mistakes and the holes in his game have been patched up. He plans to finally get that long sought-after first ONE win Thursday vs. Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev (9-2).
'I'll try to bring good performance with patience in a smart way,' Soldic said. 'It's not easy. It's a tough, tough sport. I have to do this to prove the people are wrong. Always guys comment this, that. I try to finish hard guys. That's it. This is my job. This is what I like. I am healthy. Thank God everything is on point from now and I'm ready to compete.'
'He's also an aggressive fighter with a 9-2 record. All his life, he was in ONE Championship. He lost to Christian, who is a ONE champion. He's been two years off. But he only lose to good guys, those two fights, two losses. In ONE Championship everyone is a good fighter. I accepted a really tough fight and I prepared for this. I know I can beat this guy and I never choose any opponent. My manager told me that guy, I sign. They told me Murad Ramazonov, I sign. they gave me a former champion, I sign. It doesn't matter to me. I want to compete. I want to be the best. If you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best. So I accepted a tough fight and I'm ready for it.

Danger! UFC Shanghai's Johnny Walker knows he has a ‘big challenge' in front of him and he‘must play it smart'
No. 13-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight contender, Johnny Walker, will square off against surging Chinese knockout artist, Zhang Mingyang, in the main event of UFC Shanghai this weekend (Sat., Aug. 23, 2025) inside China's Shanghai Indoor Stadium. So far, no one has been able to solve Zhang inside the Octagon. Indeed, 'Mountain Tiger' has bulldozed his way through the bottom of the 205-pound division, stopping every single opponent in less than five minutes — including former title challenger, Anthony Smith (watch highlights). The 27-year-old wrecking machine is riding a 12-fight win streak, all in the first round, with 10 coming via knockout. Walker — who has struggled with durability in his UFC losses — knows he's got his hands full. 'He is a big challenge for me,' Walker told reporters during UFC Shanghai media day. 'He's on a big win streak and is a powerful guy with a lot of finishes in the first round. He's dangerous, so I must play it smart to beat him.' If that 'smart' gameplan involves grappling, though, Walker hasn't thought about it (uh-oh). 'No. I'm a striker, and I'm going to strike with him,' Walker concluded. Of course, the Brazilian could be keeping his cards close to the chest. Now training under Eric Nicksick at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas — a coach known for detailed gameplans (except for Roman Dolidze) — Walker may have a trick or two in his back pocket. Still, the timing couldn't be tougher. Walker enters UFC Shanghai on the third two-fight losing skid of his Octagon career, having been violently knocked out in back-to-back bouts (watch highlights). A win would stabilize his position in the rankings … but another knockout loss to the Chinese phenom could push him to the brink of irrelevance in a super crowded division. What are the odds? LIVE! Stream UFC Shanghai On ESPN+ LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT MONSTERS! Bruna Brasil explains how she ended up in main event of Road to UFC card in China
Bruna Brasil will headline Friday's Road to UFC card in Shanghai opposite Chinese prospect Shi Ming, but that was not the original plan. The UFC has a Fight Night event booked for Saturday in Shanghai, headlined by Johnny Walker and Zhang Mingyang at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium, while Road to UFC, the tournament built to recruit Chinese fighters to the promotion, has a show at the same venue a day before. 'I didn't expect to go to China [laughs]. The opponent never crossed my head either, she just got in the UFC,' Brasil told MMA Fighting. '[The fight] was going to be in the regular UFC but then they suggested to transfer the fight to be a special main event to promote the Road card. I thought it was cool because it will get more attention. We would probably be fighting in the prelims, and now we get to stand out more.' Brasil said it's more 'captivating and exciting' to be the main event of a smaller show than filling up a regular UFC Fight Night. 'Tickets went on sale and it was sold out in like, 10 minutes,' Brasil said. 'I was very excited about that. I think it's going to be very cool to enter the octagon in a packed arena with everybody screaming and cheering. It's going to be fantastic. It's an unusual opportunity, I didn't expect to be the main event of a UFC event, so it's going to be an incredible experience for me. It's going to be wonderful to show people my talent and what I have to offer.' The Fighting Nerds strawweight dropped to 2-3 in the UFC after a short-notice flyweight loss to Wand Cong in February, seven months after beating Molly McCann in Manchester. Brasil now aims to once again be victorious in enemy territory. 'She's beloved in China, we've seen that already,' Brasil said of Ming. 'People like her personality, the fact she's super nice. And she's also very respectful in the fight, and Asians like that.' Ming joined the UFC after a pair of decision victories on the Road to UFC tournament, and is back to the octagon for the first time since an incredibly violent head kick knockout over Xiaocan Feng at UFC's last trip to Macau in November 2024. Brasil said that Ming is very technical and moves well on the feet, and flexible to escape submissions on the ground, but might still be untested in the sport. 'I believe she has competed with good athletes, based on what I've seen, but I don't believe she has faced anyone of my level yet,' Brasil said. 'People say I'm misguiding, that I look thin but my strikes are powerful, especially the kicks. I believe she will feel when I land the first kick or teep. I believe she will feel that hard, and that's when she will begin to realize she has to maybe change strategies a little bit, try to circle more. I'm ready for those changes. I believe she will try takedowns, too.'

Ex-champ Sean O'Malley predicts Cory Sandhagen vs. 'savage' Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 320
Sean O'Malley gives Cory Sandhagen a chance to dethrone Merab Dvalishvili. O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) is coming off back-to-back title losses to bantamweight champion Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC), most recently getting submitted at UFC 316 in June. Dvalishvili will make a less than four-month turnaround to defend his belt against Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in the UFC 320 main event on Oct. 4 in Las Vegas, his third title defense of the year. "The dude jumped into a frozen lake on top of his head; not surprised that he's fighting back-to-back-to-back times," O'Malley told MMA Junkie of Dvalishvili. "He's a savage. He's built for fighting, and why not take advantage of it? Not surprised at all." According to BetMGM, Sandhagen is a +275 betting underdog against the champion, who is a -350 favorite. O'Malley thinks Sandhagen's well-rounded skillset could surprise Dvalishvili. "Merab is improving each fight, but he's still – to this day, I watch him and I'm like, 'God, I know I can knock this motherf*cker out,'" O'Malley said. "He's sloppy in certain positions and he's beatable. He's definitely beatable and you can't count Cory out. "Cory is one of the most skilled guys in the UFC, not just in the bantamweight division. You can't count Cory out. I'm very curious to see how that fight plays out, what happens if Merab gets a hold of Cory. Merab felt super strong, so I'm curious to see what kind of scrambles Cory can create and if he can give him any trouble."
