Transport staff to go on strike across Karnataka from today
Though the Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Trade Unions of KSRTC, led by AITUC-affiliated KSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation, to put on hold the proposed indefinite strike from August 5 for a day, the JAC said it received the HC writ petition and order copy only by 7.30 pm and all the members of the JAC were not available for discussion and decision. 'We have submitted the writ petition for legal opinion and will decide on Tuesday. The strike will start as announced,' Federation General Secretary Vijaya Bhaskar said.
The JAC, which consists of trade unions of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Western Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Kalyana Karnataka West Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC), had called for an indefinite strike seeking implementation of many of their demands. The major demands include 25% pay hike with effect from January 1, 2024, settlement of pending salary arrears for 38 months (January 1, 2020, to February 28, 2023) and wage revision.
Govt is free to do what it wants: Fed prez
On Monday, Siddaramaiah chaired a high-level meeting with Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, federation president HV Anantha Subbarao and JAC representatives at Vidhana Soudha. After the meeting that lasted for almost three hours, Subbarao said, 'Siddaramaiah remained non-committal on the 25% wage hike revision from January 1, 2024. As against the clearance of 38 months' salary arrears, the CM has agreed to pay only 14 months. The stalemate continues and we are going ahead with the strike.'

Venugopal writes to Shah, Chhattisgarh CM seeking closure of ‘fabricated case' against 2 nuns
Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal on Tuesday separately wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai urging them to take necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the 'fabricated case' against two Catholic nuns from Kerala who are accused of human trafficking and forced conversion. In his letters to Mr. Shah and Mr. Sai, Mr. Venugopal also demanded that strict legal proceedings be initiated against those who physically attacked the nuns and the tribal women. Two nuns from Kerala and another person, accused of human trafficking and forced conversion, were released from the Durg Central Jail in Chhattisgarh on Saturday after a court granted them bail, holding that the case was based on 'mere suspicion.' Leaders of the Congress and the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala welcomed the news and accused the BJP of ignoring the atrocities against minorities in the States ruled by it while championing their cause in the southern State. In his letter to Mr. Shah, Mr. Venugopal said the arrest of the nuns and the events leading up to it represent a gross misuse of state power, driven not by law but by communal prejudice and political malice. 'The arrest stemmed from an entirely baseless FIR filed by a Bajrang Dal-affiliated individual, who fabricated allegations against the nuns based on vague 'apprehensions.' Far from being victims of trafficking or conversion, they were assaulted and coerced by Bajrang Dal members to give false statements implicating the nuns,' the MP from Kerala's Alappuzha said. 'Despite repeated complaints from the nuns and tribal women about manhandling, coercion, and mistreatment, the police have failed to register an FIR against the actual perpetrators. This blatant inaction reflects the disturbing bias, double standards, and extreme one-sidedness in what is clearly a politically motivated case of misrepresentation and harassment,' Mr. Venugopal said. The conditional bail granted to the accused after eight days of unjust incarceration following sustained protests by the Opposition and the public, including the Christian community, is an indictment of the injustice they were subjected to, he alleged. 'I urge you to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of this fabricated case in a time-bound manner, ensuring that the investigation reflects the truth and upholds constitutional values. At the same time, I also demand that strict legal proceedings be initiated against those who physically attacked the nuns and the tribal women. An FIR must be filed based on their statements,' Mr. Venugopal said in his letter to Shah. The impunity enjoyed by such vigilante elements must be decisively ended if the rule of law and constitutional order are to be upheld, he said. Mr. Venugopal made similar demands in his letter to Mr. Sai. Earlier in the day, United Democratic Front (UDF) MPs held a protest in the Parliament House complex, demanding that the cases in Chhattisgarh against the Catholic nuns be dropped and the 'Bajrang Dal goons who attacked the nuns' and the women be prosecuted for their hate crimes. Catholic nuns Preethy Mary and Vandana Francis and another person were arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) at the Durg railway station on July 25 following a complaint from a local Bajrang Dal functionary, who accused them of forcibly converting three girls from Narayanpur and trafficking them. The arrest sparked off a political slugfest with the Congress and CPI(M) criticising the police action and Mr. Sai accusing them of politicising the issue.

Israel mulls full Gaza control despite military and public concerns
Israel is weighing an expansion of its armed presence in Gaza, despite concern by military chiefs and a majority of the country's public that the move risks jeopardising the prospect of freeing the remaining hostages held by Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering whether to deploy the Israel Defense Forces into the 25 per cent of the Palestinian territory not already under its control, according to an Israeli official briefed on the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive information. Some Israeli military leaders have expressed reservations, the official said, while the plan would likely face considerable opposition by international governments fearful of the worsening humanitarian situation in the strip. A final decision hasn't been made, the official said, and Netanyahu plans to convene his decision-making Security Cabinet some time this week to finalize a strategy. The prime minister held a three-hour security consultation on Tuesday, during which the IDF's chief of staff 'presented the options for continuing the military campaign in Gaza,' according to a statement from Netanyahu's office. 'The IDF is prepared to implement any decision made by the security cabinet,' it said. The deliberations come with Israel under pressure both abroad and at home over its approach to the near two-year long war. Several international governments have spoken out against the spiraling humanitarian toll on Gaza's 2 million-plus population, with the United Nations warning of worsening starvation due to Israeli restrictions on food supplies and the devastation wrought by the conflict. Israel agreed to better facilitate aid distribution in Gaza by UN-affiliated agencies and NGOs at the end of July, and on Tuesday said it would further ease commercial access to boost deliveries of food and sanitary equipment, albeit under strict security vetting. Domestically, Netanyahu has lost majority public support for a war that has exhausted military reserves and failed to free all the Hamas-held hostages, according to an Institute of National Security Studies poll published Tuesday. The Islamist group still holds 50 of those kidnapped in the October 2023 attacks that triggered the war, of whom 20 are believed to be alive. The military's reservations on stepping up operations in Gaza, which local media including Ynet said are led by IDF Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir, has created tension in both Israel's government and the opposition. Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military should implement political policies and that he will make sure 'that is the case.' National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, a hard-liner member of Netanyahu's coalition, said on X that Zamir should be 'obliged to state clearly that he will fully comply with the directives of the political echelon.' Opposition leader Benny Gantz, a former IDF chief, called the attack on Zamir 'reckless.' So far, no date has been set for a security cabinet meeting. Science Minister Gila Gamliel, a member of the cabinet, said the discussion had originally been set for Tuesday but has been repeatedly deferred. She said there's still time to find an alternative diplomatic solution to ceasefire talks which stalled last month. 'At these very moments there's a chance, albeit not as good as before, of success in creating a different platform through the mediators,' Gamliel told Army Radio. US President Donald Trump, whose administration is working alongside Qatar and Egypt in the negotiations, has called for Hamas — designated a terrorist organization by Washington —- to surrender and return the hostages. But the Iran-backed group has shown no sign of capitulating, demanding a full Israeli withdrawal and refusing to disarm. Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, known as COGAT, said the Tuesday move to ease the commercial passage of food and goods into Gaza was aimed at 'reducing dependence on the collection of aid by the UN and international organisations.' In practice, a limited number of local merchants will be able to import the aid into Gaza and offer it on sale in local markets. The average number of trucks collected by aid organizations has gone up from around 30 per day in mid July to 185 by August 2, COGAT said.
