Coach, berth no. stamped on hands: How 56 women were saved from trafficking on train in Bengal
What it revealed was a tale of false promises, preying on vulnerabilities, and a racket of trafficking.
In all, 56 women were rescued and two persons accompanying them were arrested from the train at the New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri, West Bengal, officials told news agency PTI.
The women, aged between 18 and 31, hailed from the Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar districts of West Bengal.
The ticket examining staff and the railway protection force (RPF) suspected something amiss when they found that none of the women had valid tickets on them.
The coach and berth numbers were stamped on their hands, a routine check by RPF personnel revealed at the source station.
The women told them they were promised employment at a Bengaluru-based company.

The RPF found a man and a woman accompanying them who failed to clarify why the women were being sent to Bihar when they had been promised jobs in Bengaluru.
They failed to produce any documents confirming job offers or the cited reasons for the travel, officials said.
The accompanying duo were thus arrested at the spot.
The women have, meanwhile, since been returned to their homes.

The railway police and the RPF are jointly probing the case, especially the human trafficking angle.
West Bengal also has a specialised cell against human trafficking in its Criminal Investigation Department. This Anti Human Trafficking Cell (AHTU) can be contacted on 033-24506114, as per the CID website.

A young Tibetan singer and activist has been detained by Chinese authorities, the India-based Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) said. Tzukte, popularly known as Asang, was taken into custody sometime in early July after he sang a song eulogising Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, the CTA said in a statement Saturday (July 27, 2025). The CTA, which functions as a government-in-exile but is not officially recognised by any country, said the arrest was "part of Beijing's broader campaign to suppress Tibetan voices, specially Tibetan artists and writers". China considers Tibet an inalienable part of its territory and has ruled the region with an iron fist since its troops crushed an uprising for autonomy in 1959. Chinese authorities did not respond to a request for comment. "His detention, without charge or information on his whereabouts, violates international human rights norms and underscores China's ongoing assault on freedom of expression, cultural rights, and religious belief in Tibet," the CTA said. Asang, who is in his twenties, is a student of Gebe, a prominent Tibetan singer supporting the Tibetan cause through his music. Earlier this year, Asang reportedly appeared in public in the Ngawa region of Sichuan province with the word "Tibet" written on his forehead — a gesture that drew widespread praise online but also intensified scrutiny from officials. Rights activists have regularly voiced alarm at Beijing's alleged efforts to erase cultural and religious identity in Tibet.

Farooq Abdullah condemns killing of Gujjar man in Jammu
Srinagar, Jul 27 (PTI) National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Sunday expressed anguish over the recent killing of a Gujjar man in cross-firing with police in Jammu city. Calling the killing of Parvez Ahmad 'deeply unfortunate and regrettable," Abdullah echoed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's call for accountability and justice, emphasising that the use of force by law enforcement agencies must be responsible and proportionate. Parvez Ahmad (21), a Gujjar hailing from the Nikki Tawi area of Jammu, was killed in a crossfire when police were allegedly chasing drug peddlers in the Satwari area on Thursday. His killing has sparked protests by the community, with his family accusing the police of murdering an 'innocent" man in a 'staged" encounter. 'This tragic loss of life cannot be brushed aside. It is imperative that a swift and impartial inquiry be initiated so that the truth comes to light and those responsible are held accountable," Abdullah said. He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul. 'My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Muhammad Parvez in this hour of immense grief. Justice must prevail," he said. Abdullah also cautioned that such incidents have previously caused irreparable damage to public trust and societal harmony, and urged authorities to prevent their recurrence. Rave party busted in Hyderabad's Kondapur; 9 people arrested, 2 absconding
Nine people were arrested on Saturday night for allegedly planning to organise a rave party at an apartment in Kondapur area of Hyderabad. Based on intelligence inputs, the Prohibition and Excise Department's State Task Force conducted a route watch and busted the drugs party in Kondapur area. The key accused, who organises drug parties, along with other accused — peddlers, from Andhra Pradesh had booked a service apartment for the proposed party, reported news agency PTI citing an official. The STF team has seized 2.080 kg of dry ganja, 50 grams of OG Kush (hybrid ganja), among other narcotic substances and LSD blot papers from the possession of the accused, which were meant for the rave party, besides six vehicles, the official said. According to the report, a case has been registered against 11 people. Nine accused have been arrested, while two others are absconding. Further probe into the matter is underway. Meanwhile, Pune Police arrested seven persons after busting a "drug party" following a raid at an apartment on Sunday and seized narcotics, hookah set ups and liquor. The raid was conducted around 3.30 AM on Sunday and a "drug party" was busted at the studio apartment, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nikhil Pingle said at a press conference. During the raid and subsequent search, the police seized 2.7 grams of a cocaine-like substance, 70 gm of a ganja-like substance, a hookah pot, various hookah flavours, and liquor and beer bottles, Pingle said. Pranjal Khewalkar, the husband of former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse's daughter Rohini Khadse, was among those arrested. "We have arrested seven individuals, identified as Pranjal Khewalkar, Nikhil Poptani, Sameer Sayyad, Shripad Yadav, Sachin Bhombe, Isha Singh and Prachi Sharma, under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act," the DCP said.
