Volunteers show up to support wildfire evacuees
Volunteers are coming together in Bridgetown, N.S., to support people who have had to leave their homes as the Annapolis County wildfire at Long Lake continues to burn out of control. On Monday afternoon, officials said the wildfire — which began on Aug. 13 — is estimated to be 3,210 hectares, or about 32 square kilometres. Maj. Leslie Wiseman of the Salvation Army told CBC News on Monday that the organization is managing donations. "There's a community that wants to help and they need some direction on how to help," Wiseman said. "And so that's what we are providing here." The Salvation Army opened its church in the community on Sunday night. Wiseman said the organization is looking for donations like cash and gift cards so residents can buy things that would be the most helpful to them. But Wiseman said they are also accepting hygiene items, pet food and clothing. Donations will be accepted on Tuesday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the church. Cash, gift cards, hygiene items "Based on last week and being at the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department, a lot of donations were coming in like material donations, water and snacks and that sort of thing. And so based on that response, we're really hoping that people will rally together and drop off some donations so that we can help our neighbours," she said. Wiseman lives in an area not far from where the fire is burning. She said there is a "general feeling of being unsettled." "It's almost like you're holding your breath or you can't fully relax or focus on what you're doing because you're just watching news updates all the time. You're thinking about the first responders and the firefighters on the ground and just this heaviness of concern. "But also in the midst of worry and concern, there's also this beautiful coming together as a community." Neil Alderson, the director of the Nova Scotia Guard — an organization created by the provincial government last year to help during disasters — said eight volunteers have been helping out at the community hall and the command post. 'Our volunteers are amazing' "Our volunteers are amazing. They've been here since Sunday morning. I had the chance to to work and meet with a number of them and they're just really wanting to help community and give back," Alderson said. Alderson said most of the volunteers helping with the Long Lake fire are from the Annapolis County, but a few are from surrounding counties. He said Nova Scotians love to give back through volunteering, which he acknowledged can be challenging to do in emergencies. "The whole creation of the guard was to create that opportunity for Nova Scotians who want to help their communities and give back in times of need," he said. Donations will be accepted on Tuesday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the church.
