Brendan Gleeson honoured for 'commitment to social justice'
The Dubliner, who has starred in the likes of Braveheart, Michael Collins and the Harry Potter films, more recently won critical acclaim for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, for which he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
This week the star was one of seven people to receive an award from the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain, which marked his 'outstanding achievements in acting and social justice'.

His fellow recipients included the groundbreaking athlete Rhasidat Adeleke, former Ireland rugby star Johnny Sexton and Fair City actor Bryan Murray and his partner Úna Crawford O'Brien, for their "contribution to the arts, on stage and on screen and for raising awareness of dementia".
Croatian twins Allen and Jay Bobinac were also recognised with awards marking their 'outstanding voluntary service to the people of Dublin and their dedication to helping the homeless in the city'.

Team Power of One received an award in recognition of their work raising awareness and funds for Heart Children Ireland and Children's Heart Centre – CHI Crumlin in memory of Saoirse.
And an award was given posthumously to Isobel Henderson 'in recognition of her outstanding service and unwavering dedication to the Girls' Brigade Ireland'.
Ms Blain presented the awards at a ceremony held at Dublin's Mansion House.
'These awards are a chance for me to say thank you, on behalf of all the citizens of Dublin, to some people who have made a real difference to the social fabric of life in our city,' she said.
'Some of the award recipients will be well known to many of us, others not so.
'However, they are all very worthy of this award and I am delighted to be able to honour them in this way.'

The trailer for the Colin Farrell-starring psychological thriller Ballad of a Small Player has been released ahead of the film's arrival in cinemas and on Netflix in October. Ballad of a Small Player will be released in Irish cinemas on Friday 17 October and on Netflix on Wednesday 29 October. The film teams Farrell with Edward Berger, the director of the Oscar-winning Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front. "However, in hot pursuit is Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton) - a private investigator ready to confront Doyle with what he is running from. "As Doyle tries to climb to salvation, the confines of reality start to close in." Ballad of a Small Player is based on the Lawrence Osborne book The Ballad of a Small Player and is adapted for the screen by Rowan Joffe (Tin Star, 28 Weeks Later). The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September.

Farrell is set to appear in the lead role in Ballad of a Small Player as a high-stakes gambler on the run as his debts begin to mount. The teaser shows Farrell's character, Lord Doyle, moving through the streets of Macau and playing in card games in the city's casinos. The film, an adaptation of the 2014 novel of the same name by Lawrence Osborne, has been written for the screen by Rowan Joffe, who wrote The American and 28 Weeks Later, the horror sequel released earlier this year starring Cillian Murphy. Alongside Farrell, Chen and Swinton, it will also feature performances from Deanie Ip and Alex Jennings. Ballad of a Small Player will get a theatrical release in select cinemas across Ireland and the UK from October 17 ahead of its global release on Netflix on October 29. His starring role in the psychological thriller continues a successful year for Farrell, who earned his first Emmy nomination for his lauded performance as Oz Cobb in the Batman spinoff series The Penguin.

Colin Farrell ‘beyond excited' to receive Zurich Film Festival's Golden Icon Award
COLIN FARRELL will be in Switzerland next month to receive a prestigious industry award honouring his success as an actor. The Irishman, who hails from Dublin but now lives in the US, has been confirmed as the 2025 recipient of Zurich Film Festival's Golden Icon Award. Having starred in the likes of Miami Vice, In Bruges and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Farrell received a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Martin McDonagh's 2022 hit The Banshees of Inisherin. He will fly to Switzerland to accept his latest award during the annual Zurich Film Festival which takes place from September 25 to October 5. There he will be honoured for his lengthy career and also his performance in his recent film, Netflix's Ballad of a Small Player, in which he was guided by Swiss director Edward Berger.
