Bengaluru stampede: Cops had warned against feting RCB at legislature

BENGALURU: Three days after a stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium killed 11 peopleat RCB's IPL win celebration, it emerged that senior police officer MN Karibasavana Gowda had red-flagged the risks just before the event. His written warning to top bureaucrats on June 4, the day of the tragedy, also cautioned against the felicitation at Vidhana Soudha. "Lakhs of cricket fans are likely to come to Vidhana Soudha. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobast will be a problem," Gowda, in-charge of security at the legislature, wrote to department of personnel and administrative reforms secretary G Sathyavathi. Sidda, DKS have blood on their hands, they're trying to wipe it on cops: BJP In the letter, which TOI is in possession of, Gowda also pointed to the venue's sensitive status and lack of adequate CCTV coverage. Hours before the surge, department of personnel and administrative reforms secretary and senior IAS officer G Sathyavathi, overseeing arrangements at Vidhana Soudha steps, publicly urged fans to head to the stadium instead - a short distance away. The team was feted at the legislature and the celebrations then moved on to the stadium. But fears of overcrowding had set in well in advance. Despite the warning, RCB's IPL victory celebrations were allegedly rushed through - less than 24 hours after the final match - without proper crowd control or safety protocols. But permissions were still granted. Adding fuel to the political fire, Union minister and JD(S) functionary HD Kumaraswamy alleged Saturday that the celebrations were "pre-planned" even before RCB won. "The FIR says permission for the June 4 event was sought on June 3 at 6pm - 90 minutes before the final even began. Did they dream about winning?" he asked, demanding accountability from CM Siddaramaiah , deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and home minister G Parameshwara. He questioned the need for a felicitation so soon. "Was such a slipshod felicitation needed? Who put pressure on the police commissioner at 7.30am that day for permission?" BJP's Bangalore North MP and Union minister Shobha Karandlaje echoed the outrage, calling it a "misuse of govt space". "The grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha have always been used for swearing-in or state functions. You used it for a private team," she said. Accusing the Congress brass, Karandlaje said: "Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have blood on their hands. Now they're trying to wipe it on police officers. Where are KC Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala hiding?"

Student's death: Murder case filed against med college principal, others

Kota: City police have registered a murder case against the principal of Kota Govt Medical College, a hostel warden and two MBBS students following directions from the State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST Commission). The case relates to the death of Sunil Bairwa, a 28-year-old third-year MBBS student, who was found hanging in the college's hostel room in March this year. T he accused include Dr Sangeeta Saxena, the college principal, an unidentified hostel warden, and two MBBS students - Adarsh Fojdar and Sandeep. The case has been registered under different sections of BNS and the SC/ST Act at the Mahaveer Nagar police station. The development comes after the deceased student's father filed a plea with both state and national SC/ST commissions, alleging his son was murdered. According to the father's complaint, the college administration denied his son permission to appear for examinations and was allegedly harassed by the warden and two fellow students. Initially, police treated the case as a suicide and registered it under section 194 of BNSS. However, following the commission's intervention, the investigation has now been elevated to a murder case and transferred to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the area. Circle Inspector Ramesh Kavia of Mahaveer Nagar police station confirmed that while preliminary evidence suggested suicide, a fresh investigation would be conducted under the new charges.

Fans stand next to abandoned shoes and a fallen barrier following a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru Not just the Karnataka government officials, but RCB heads also bore the brunt of the deadly stampede that injured over 40 others after fans thronged outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, June 4. On Friday, a city court remanded four individuals — including Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Head of Marketing and Revenue, Nikhil Sosale — to 14 days in judicial custody in connection with the fatal stampede. Apart from transferring officials, the Karnataka government on Saturday ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigation into the stampede case. As part of the investigation, CID officials visited the office of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to gather preliminary information on the matter, ANI reported. As per ESPNCricinfo, top senior officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, have resigned from their posts, citing "moral responsibility" for the stampede. They submitted the resignations to the president of the board, Raghuram Bhat. The brutal stampede also left its footprints on social media. Following the tragedy, angry netizens, who were once all praise for Virat Kohli, demanded that the cricket icon be put behind bars. Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Virat Kohli (L) holds the Indian Premier League trophy aloft alongside teammates outside the M. At least 11 people were killed in a stampede on June 4, as a tightly packed crowd celebrated the victory of their home cricket team in the Indian city of Bengaluru, the state's chief minister said. Social media users even clashed with each other over #ArrestKohli trending on X, as many users claimed the stampede was because of the organisers' failure.
