When Tom Brady's New England Patriots teams were in their heyday, some of the best wide receivers in the NFL made their home in Foxborough. Randy Moss, Deion Branch and Wes Welker are among the many wideouts who caught passes from, arguably, the greatest quarterback in professional football history.

DeMario Douglas is conscious of this fact. He told reporters on Monday that he frequently watches film reels of wide receivers from past Patriots offenses led by current offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, whose most recent stint with the team lasted from 2012 to 2021.
According to Douglas, there is one wide receiver who stands out ahead of the rest: Julian Edelman, a three-time Super Bowl champion and member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame who spent the entirety of his 12-year career with the team.
"It's got to be Jules," Douglas said when asked about his favorite wideout to watch. "We got cutups of Mack Hollins running some of the plays when he was with the Raiders and stuff like that. [But] definitely watching Jules, I have Edelman, for sure."

Douglas and Edelman have had numerous conversations since the former joined the Patriots organization ahead of the 2023 campaign. Douglas said, whenever these conversations happen, he takes advantage of the opportunity to gain insight from a player he has tremendous respect for.

"Every time I see him, he gives me nothing but good knowledge. I watch his film, and I'm like, 'How did you get open on this?'" Douglas said. "He knows the game, and he's done it. So, every time I pick his brain, I try to get all the knowledge I can."
The Patriots selected Douglas with a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Since then, he has emerged as one of the team's go-to targets, totaling 1,182 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 115 receptions during his first two seasons in the league.

49ers GM explains why team decided to 'throttle back' on spending big in 2025 offseason It took awhile for the San Francisco 49ers to get active in this year's offseason. They made a handful of low-level free agent additions while watching several starters and key reserves leave to join other clubs. After the draft, the 49ers got busy with big-money extensions for tight end George Kittle, quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner. Still, it was a strange offseason considering how willing the 49ers have been to spend money to fill holes in free agency. This year they chose to fill their more significant roster weaknesses via the draft. General manager John Lynch in an appearance on the 49ers Talk podcast explained the club's decision to 'throttle back' on their aggressiveness in free agency. "Look, we've been aggressive since Kyle (Shanahan) and I arrived here," Lynch said. "And that's what Jed and the family want to do. They want to be aggressive and we have been, but you can't just keep doing that. At some point you have to throttle back. Then we felt for the overall health of our cap and cash situation -- plus our roster in general -- you don't want to just become an aging roster. "The year before, we felt like we had such a good team. Let's keep it together, but you've got to stay young. And I think our draft last year was really good, and we had a chance with 11 picks to really add to that, and I was really excited. I thought we did a good job executing that plan." It's hard to argue that the 49ers executed their plan well. They wanted some of their less productive, expensive, aging players off the roster so they could either save money or accelerate their cap hits to this year when Purdy is still not making a ton of money against the cap. With 11 picks to supplement an eight-player class from a season ago, San Francisco has successfully made their roster younger and less expensive in the immediate future. On the other hand, whether this strategy ultimately works remains to be seen. The 49ers aren't tanking, but they're relying a lot on rookies for a club that's trying to get back to Super Bowl contention. On-field production will ultimately tell us whether the 49ers successfully executed their long-term strategy, but for now the offseason appears to have played out exactly as they expected. "Being fully transparent, obviously, last year didn't go the way I wanted," McCaffrey said. "It didn't go the way anyone wanted. But having this time off has allowed me to start from scratch and have the time where I can build a base again, come into OTAs, play football and now get back into it mentally, emotionally, physically in all ways. It was much needed and I'm happy we had it." Clearly, the superstar running back has approached his offseason the right way. He seems rejuvenated and ready to get back to dominating opposing defenses. Back in the 2023 NFL season, McCaffrey put together a massive season. He carried the football 272 times for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. In addition, he caught 67 passes for 564 yards and seven more touchdowns. Not only will McCaffrey getting back to full health be good for San Francisco, it will also help franchise quarterback Brock Purdy. He also had a down year in 2024 with opposing defenses being able to key in on the passing game. He is clearly excited to get the season underway. Hopefully, he will be able to stay healthy throughout the entirety of the 2025 season.
