Ohio State rock' n' roll icon passes away after decades of bringing fans closer together
One of the men who has helped shape the culture of Ohio State athletic teams has passed away at the age of 77. While he never played in a game, Rick Derringer played something else that would make a lasting impression in the hearts of Buckeye fans all over the world. Derringer was a guitarist with a band called "The McCoys" who brought the song Hang on Sloopy to Buckeye Nation. The song made its Ohio Stadium debut on October 9, 1965 by the OSU marching band and was named the state's official rock song on November 20, 1985.
If you're any kind of Ohio State fan and if you read Buckeyes Wire, you most likely are, you instantly know the rhythmic beat to the famed Sloopy. The tune has become a staple of just about every OSU sporting event since 1965, especially in the Horseshoe on Saturday afternoons in the fall. Just this past weekend, my wife and I were at a reception in Illinois, of all places, and the cover band began playing the familiar notes to the song. We both perked up and added the "O-H-I-O" at the appropriate time, to the looks of bewilderment from those not from the Buckeye State.
People come and go as is the nature of life. Our hope is that when we're gone, we'll leave some type of lasting impression, hopfully in a positive way. Rick Derringer was part of something that did just that. Although he and the band proably didn't know it at the time, they have become part of tradition that makes college sports so relatiable and brings people from all walks of life closer together.

Steelers Rookie Jack Sawyer Already Drawing Rave Reviews
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers put together a very interesting draft. While they didn't take a quarterback as early as expected, waiting until the sixth round to bring in Will Howard, they made other big-time moves before that selection. One of the more intriguing additions was former Ohio State standout pass rusher Jack Sawyer. Sawyer, who was one of the heroes of the College Football Playoff for the Buckeyes, will now look to help T.J. Watt with pressure off of the edge. So far, he is making a major impression on the Steelers and his new teammates. Photo byWith OTA's underway, Sawyer has been given a chance to show his new teammates what he can bring to the team. He has already started making them take notice of his ability. Read more: Peyton Manning Doesn't Hold Back About Aaron Rodgers Amid Steelers Rumors Alex Highsmith, Pittsburgh's veteran linebacker, spoke out with major praise for Sawyer. He likes what he's seeing from the rookie defender. "He's gonna be a dog for us," Highsmith said. "He's got his right head on his shoulders and he works hard. Like I said, he's got the right mindset. It's been cool being able to interact with him and help him out. I came in as a rookie, and T.J. [Watt] and Bud [Dupree] helped me out a lot, as well. That's one thing I want to be able to pour into the new guys that are coming in." Two things can be taken from that quote. Number one, Sawyer could provide an instant impact for the Steelers. Secondly, Highsmith has become a major leader for the defense and will be very helpful for young players. Of course, the rumors surrounding Pittsburgh on the offensive side of the football have not died down. Aaron Rodgers still has yet to sign a contract and the quarterback situation is a complete question mark. Read more: Steelers Given Shocking Suggestion at QB and It's Not Aaron Rodgers Even with Rodgers onboard, the Steelers would need a great defense to compete in the AFC. They seem to have put that defense together well. During his college career at Ohio State, Sawyer played in four seasons and 54 total games. He racked up 144 total tackles to go along with 23 sacks, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, two defensive touchdowns, one interception, and 11 defended passes. There is no question that Sawyer has the talent to become a special player at the NFL level. Already, he's starting to show that potential and his teammates are clearly taking notice. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph thinks Will Howard has a lot of tools.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph thinks Will Howard has a lot of tools. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Many expected the Pittsburgh Steelers to take a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but not many thought they would wait as long as they did. Advertisement They drafted Ohio State field general Will Howard with the 185th pick in the sixth round of the draft, and veteran QB Mason Rudolph thinks that the rookie has a lot of good things going for him. "He's been great," Rudolph said in a recent interview with Missi Matthews. "He's a nice guy, first of all. He's a good guy to share the quarterback room with... He is athletic and he throws the ball well... I think he's got a lot of tools and I'll be excited to go to work with him." Some, including former NFL coach Jon Gruden, have compared the 6-4, 236 pound rookie to Buffalo Bills' MVP winner Josh Allen, who himself was not all that in his rookie season. If Howard can live up to even half of that comparison, the Steelers have something to look forward to. Advertisement In his final season with the Buckeyes this past season, Howard finished with 4,010 passing yards and 35 touchdowns on 73 percent completion, all three of which led the Big Ten Conference. The Steelers' current starting quarterback is Rudolph, with no Aaron Rodgers decision seeming to be imminent just yet. But eventually? If Howard can prove that he has all of the tools that Rudolph says he does, he could have an opportunity to take the veteran's job as Pittsburgh's QB1. Colorado football class of 2026 offensive tackle target releases final five schools
Colorado football class of 2026 offensive tackle target releases final five schools Colorado football class of 2026 offensive tackle target Chancellor Campbell released his final five schools on Friday. The Buffaloes are part of a final quintet, along with heavy hitters Ohio State, Florida, Georgia, Colorado and Penn State. 247Sports lists the 6-foot-8, 295-pound Campbell as a three-star recruit, as does On3. He is the No. 37 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 55 recruit from Florida. The Saint Petersburg native has a 94.6% chance to sign with his home state team, the Florida Gators, according to On3. Campbell has visits scheduled with Penn State (June 20), Ohio State (June 13), Florida (June 6) and Georgia (May 30). It is unclear whether Campbell will schedule an official visit with the Buffs. Colorado's class of 2026 is currently two players deep with four-star tight end Gavin Mueller and junior college product Domata Peko Jr. being the only two commitments so far. Deion Sanders and Colorado should be hitting the recruiting trail hard this spring with official visits heating up as we enter the summer months. High school recruits are never the No. 1 source of new talent for the Coach Prime-led Buffs, but the idea of quality over quantity seems to ring true every time. Campbell, a three-star prospect, would be a quality addition and continue the trend of Colorado bolstering its offensive line.
