FRIM listed as Malaysia's sixth Unesco World Heritage Site
In a statement today, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry said the announcement was made yesterday during the 47th session of the Unesco World Heritage Committee, held from July 6 to 16 at the Paris headquarters of Unesco.
The ministry said the listing was decided by the 21 member states of the World Heritage Committee, following a nomination process that began in 2013.
"FRIM Selangor Forest Park is a unique site and represents one of the earliest large-scale tropical forest ecosystem restoration efforts through the replanting of trees in a former tin mining area.
"This initiative has set an international benchmark by successfully creating an ecosystem that closely resembles a natural tropical rainforest, rich in tree species diversity and overall biodiversity," the statement added.
According to the ministry, the inscription of the forest park affirms Malaysia's ongoing commitment to protecting and conserving natural and cultural sites of outstanding universal value, while enhancing the country's visibility on the global stage.
"The ministry is confident that this recognition will add significant value to FRIM Selangor Forest Park as a key tourism product in Selangor.
"In line with Visit Malaysia 2026 and Visit Selangor Year 2025, this achievement is expected to boost international tourist arrivals and contribute to Malaysia's economy, particularly benefiting local communities," the statement added.
With this latest listing, Malaysia now has six Unesco World Heritage Sites.
The previous sites are Kinabalu Park (2000), Gunung Mulu National Park (2000), the Historic Cities of the Strait of Malacca—Melaka and George Town (2008), the Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley (2012) and the Archaeological Heritage of the Niah National Park Caves Complex (2024).
To date, a total of 1,223 sites worldwide have been inscribed under the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. — BERNAMA

The refreshed attraction features 16 impressive new models built from over 1.5 million Lego bricks. Highlights include iconic landmarks such as the Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer, the Merlion Fountain, as well as the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome. Meanwhile, Lim said Legoland Malaysia has continued to reinvest in facilities and attractions to enhance visitor experience and stay competitive in the evolving tourism landscape. He said Legoland's role in drawing domestic and international visitors is expected to further support economic activity in Johor. He added that the company has seen a steady increase in visitors over the years, buoyed by strong demand from its resident market, namely Malaysia and Singapore, which account for about 60 per cent of total visitors. The remaining 40 per cent comprises tourists from Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Australia and South Korea, among others. Lim said Legoland Malaysia remains upbeat about its outlook for the second half of the year and into next year, which will see both VJY 2026 and Visit Malaysia 2026 campaigns running concurrently. 13MP roadmap to boost Malaysia tourism sector by 2030
KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has hailed the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as a strategic roadmap to elevate tourism into a high-income and sustainable sector. With Visit Malaysia 2026 on the horizon, Tiong emphasised that the plan reflects the government's dedication to industry growth and nationwide benefits. During Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's parliamentary presentation, the tourism sector's strong recovery was highlighted, with foreign visitors contributing RM102.2 billion in 2024. 'This achievement is promising, and under the 13MP, we aim to increase tourism's GDP contribution to 16 percent by 2030,' Tiong stated. A key initiative involves establishing Special Tourism Investment Zones (STIZ) in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Sarawak. 'Forty-three potential sites have been identified as of June 2025. We will expedite implementation with relevant agencies,' he added. Tiong also praised the focus on rural tourism, particularly homestays, which provide income opportunities for local communities while showcasing Malaysia's cultural diversity. Aviation expansion is another priority, with plans to introduce 178 new aircraft by 2030 to enhance regional connectivity. Infrastructure projects in East Malaysia, including the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road and Pan Borneo Highway, were noted as crucial for tourism growth. Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew is confident that Sabah will fully unleash its potential as a leading destination for Business Events (BE) or Meeting, Incentive, Convention & Exhibition (MICE) tourism. She said going by the relentless efforts made by the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sabah is on the right track towards reaching this milestone in the not too distant future. 'We (Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment) fully support the SICC-organised Bigsabah Sale 2025 from October 31 to November 2, given its role in driving domestic tourism, empowering local entrepreneurs, and elevating Sabah's profile in the regional economic landscape. 'I understand that the event will feature 500 booths, up from 300 in 2024, and is expected to attract 50,000 visitors,' Liew said after a courtesy call by the Chief Executive Officer of SICC, Datuk Dr Hajah Rosmawati Haji Lasuki on Tuesday.
