PETALING JAYA: Solarvest Holdings Bhd executive director and group CEO Davis Chong Chun Shiong is confident the clean energy expert's order book will cross the RM2bil mark in financial year 2026 (FY26).
As he reviewed the final quarter of the group's 2025 financial year, Chong said the feat will be supported by additional fifth large scale solar (LSS5) contracts, anticipated LSS5+ award, as well as active participation in solar battery energy storage systems and upcoming LSS6 tenders in the second quarter of financial year 2025 (2Q25) and 3Q25 of this calendar year.
'In light of the potential rise in Malaysia's electricity tariffs in July, we also foresee improved project feasibility under the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme.
'This creates compelling opportunities for Solarvest to scale beyond our RM2bil order book target,' he said in a statement.
'The key drivers of our revenue growth include ongoing engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning projects under the Corporate Green Power Programme and LSS5 programmes.
'Beyond utility scale projects, the commercial and industrial segment is also expected to remain strong, with approximately RM200mil in annual replenishments.'
As at March 31, 2025, the group's unbilled order book stood at RM1.24bil.
In the fourth quarter of the financial year ended March 31, 2025 (4Q25), Solavest posted a net profit of RM20.53bil, a 165% increase over the net profit of RM7.73mil in the year-ago quarter.
The group's revenue rose to RM224.87mil from RM96.9mil in the previous comparative quarter.
Earnings per share climbed to 2.82 sen from 1.15 sen previously.
Over the 12-month period, Solarvest's net profit rose to RM51.94mil from RM32.63mil in FY24, while revenue increased to RM536.82mil from RM497.03mil in the previous year.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on its latest results, Solarvest said the outlook for Malaysia's renewable energy (RE) industry remains positive, driven by the government's commitment to increasing RE capacity to 70% of the national energy mix and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
'The power sector is projected to raise its RE capacity to 31% by 2025 and 40% by 2035, with solar energy expected to become the dominant RE source.'
The company noted that Malaysia's renewable energy landscape continues to gain momentum with a series of new initiatives aimed at expanding solar power and energy storage capacity.
'Following the completion of the LSS5 and LSS5+ bidding rounds, the government has issued the Request for Proposal in May 2025 for the MyBeST programme slated to achieve commercial operation in 2027.
'The programme targets the deployment of 400MWh/1,600MWh of storage capacity across Peninsular Malaysia and opens participation to third-party developers.'
Solarvest said this is expected to enhance grid stability and flexibility, supporting Malaysia's transition towards a higher share of renewable energy.
'All these initiatives underline the government's commitment to RE and are expected to benefit local RE developers and engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning players.
'Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the board is of the view that the group's overall performance would remain satisfactory for the coming financial year.'

Growth likely at 4.3% in the second quarter

HLIB Research said on the demand side, growth is anticipated to be primarily led by private consumption. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the second quarter of this year (2Q25) is projected to hit 4.3%, driven by the agriculture sector's recovery, and expansion in the services, manufacturing and construction sectors, says Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research). The projection is slightly below the Statistics Department's advance estimate and consensus median forecast of 4.5%. HLIB Research said on the demand side, growth is anticipated to be primarily led by private consumption, and volatile import duties are likely to contribute positively to GDP. 'For now, we maintain our GDP growth forecast for this year at 4%, pending the release of the full 2Q25 GDP print on Aug 15,' the research house said yesterday. It said growth will be anchored by resilient domestic demand, steady employment and wage gains, and supportive fiscal measures, including a one-off RM100 cash transfer for all adults to be used from Aug 31 to Dec 31. Assuming that the entire amount of the cash transfer is spent, HLIB Research estimates that a total of RM2bil in spending would raise private consumption by 0.2 percentage points. 'Nevertheless, downside risks to growth persist, stemming from global trade headwinds and policy uncertainty,' it said. Meanwhile, Maybank Investment Bank Research also predicted Malaysia's GDP in 2Q25 to be at 4.3%, reflecting slower growth in the services and construction sectors, firmer performances from the manufacturing and agriculture sectors, and smaller contraction in the mining sector. — Bernama

Judge in Sarawak DAP chief's defamation case ordered to produce judgment

KUCHING: The Court of Appeal has ordered the trial judge in the defamation trial of Stampin MP and Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen to provide the written grounds of judgment within one month from today. This is to enable the hearing of Chong's appeal to be heard. The hearing of the appeal today had to be postponed as the written judgment was not available. "As directed by the Court of Appeal, my lawyers will also be writing to the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak on this matter," Chong said. He hoped to receive the grounds of judgment soon for the appeal to proceed. Chong said the trial had concluded four years ago and "yet there is still no grounds of judgment from the trial judge". In 2012, Chong criticised the state's budget, pointing to what he described as a recurring line item titled "government's contribution towards government-approved agencies trust fund". He argued that this allocation acted as a "black hole" since it lacked transparency as substantial sums in billions of ringgit were transferred without disclosure of the actual recipients or their uses. In 2013, the then Sarawak government and State Financial Authority (SFA) filed a defamation lawsuit against him following his published claims, including in leaflets and news outlets, that RM11 billion in public funds had gone into this "black hole". The suit was filed in the Kuching High Court, and the trial started on Jan 7, 2021. On August 30, 2022, the judge ruled in favour of the state government, determining that Chong's "black hole" remark was defamatory, and that his defences — justification, fair comment, and qualified privilege — did not hold. The judge ordered Chong to pay RM150,000 in damages and RM50,000 in legal costs, and issued an injunction preventing him from repeating the statement. Chong said the trial judge then did not provide the grounds of judgment. "After almost three years from the decision of the High Court judge, or four years after the conclusion of the trial, the judge has not provided the grounds of his judgment. "Over the years, we have written five times to the High Court to request the grounds of judgment, but all to no avail," Chong said. He said because there were no grounds of judgment, his appeal, which was to have been heard today, had to be postponed. Chong filed the appeal on Sept 12, 2022, arguing that allowing the government to sue individuals for defamation was a dangerous erosion of freedom of speech and that the judgment posed a threat to democratic rights across the Commonwealth. The judge who presided over the trial was a judicial commissioner at the time.

Singapore director charged in RM155k cheating case involving Malaysians

JOHOR BAHRU: A Singaporean company director pleaded not guilty in court today over cheating allegations involving three Singaporeans and a Malaysian in a RM155,000 investment scheme. Chong Kok Ming, 54, a Singapore permanent resident, is accused alongside another Singaporean man still at large of deceiving four victims into depositing money into a Malaysian company's account. The victims were allegedly misled into believing they would become shareholders and receive annual dividends from the investment. Lim Swee Chong and Lim Swee Joo reportedly lost RM71,250 each, while Ho Sang Bin and Puah Kot Choon suffered losses of RM6,250 each. The offences allegedly occurred at a bank in Batu Pahat on October 15, 2014. Chong was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' jail, a fine, or both. The prosecution proposed a bail of RM15,000 per charge, but Chong's lawyer requested a lower amount, citing his client's financial responsibilities. Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail set total bail at RM20,000 with one surety and scheduled the next mention for September 17. - Bernama
