'No bad blood': New Bulldog shines as Roosters toil

Yahoo10-03-2025
Talk of the Sydney Roosters' demise is premature, says new Canterbury recruit Sitili Tupouniua, who claims his former club has more than enough firepower to overcome their horrendous start to the 2025 NRL season.
After Trent Robinson's side were pumped 50-14 by Brisbane last Thursday, Tupouniua was lighting it up on his debut for the Bulldogs by clocking up 148m and five tackle busts to lead Cameron Ciraldo's side to Saturday's 28-20 win over St George Illawarra.
The Tongan forward's impressive performance netted him three Dally M votes and in turn has prompted fresh questions over the Roosters' recruitment and retention.
Tupouniua insists there is "no bad blood" after he was told he was free to leave the Tricolours midway through last season, seven months after he penned a three-year contract extension.

— NRL (@NRL) March 8, 2025
It was a similar story for prop Terrell May, who was also moved on by the Bondi club before Christmas despite agreeing to a new deal last April.
May was a standout on his NRL debut for Wests Tigers.
The exits of Tupouniua, May, Luke Keary, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joey Manu and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii represented 953 games of NRL experience that left the club over the off-season.
The Roosters say they are happy to back their next crop of talented juniors to fill the void over time but may face further growing pains as they blood their next generation.
"Obviously it's in the past now and there's no bad blood there," Tupouniua said.
"It was just meant to be and it (moving to Canterbury) was a fresh start for me.
"They have a lot of young guys there and I feel like, give them time and they'll come good.
"They've still got quality players, so I'm not writing them off at all."
Life doesn't get any easier for the Roosters, who face four-time defending premiers Penrith on Friday - a side they haven't beaten since 2019.
Canterbury, meanwhile, will be aiming to gun down Gold Coast on their return to Belmore.
Tupouniua played as a prop against the Dragons and is happy to play as an edge forward.
"I saw the direction that they were heading and talking to 'Ciro', with the culture that they had here it was something I wanted to be a part of," he said.
"They just wanted me to come and bring energy, whether I am playing on an edge or coming off the bench.
"If I can stay injury free and stay on the field, I know that my best footy is still ahead of me."

Roosters half set to be axed amid timely boost after loss to Wests Tigers

Sam Walker looks set to make a timely return for a Sydney Roosters team who have fallen outside the top-eight. And it looks like being bad news for five-eighth Sandon Smith. The Roosters were expected to put a big score on the Wests Tigers on Sunday, and despite scoring five tries to four they lost 30-28. Trent Robinson's side have now slipped to ninth-place on the NRL ladder, but just two points separate them and the Broncos in fifth. In a timely boost for the Tri Colours, star halfback Walker could make his long-awaited return in Round 19 against the Dragons on Saturday. Walker suffered an ACL injury late last year, and his return was delayed even further when he suffered a broken hand four weeks ago. The Roosters said they expected Walker to miss a month with the hand injury, putting him in line for a possible return on Saturday. Walker will likely slot in at halfback, with Hugo Savala shifting to No.6. It means Smith will be relegated to a bench role or forced to go back to reserve-grade. In Round 15 when Walker was initially named to make his return, it was Smith rather than Savala to make way. That's despite Smith being in the side all season long - even when it was Chad Townsend at halfback rather than Savala. The 23-year-old appears to have overtaken Smith in the pecking order, and outplayed him again on Sunday despite the loss. Savala had a try assist and 393 kick metres, while Smith played more of a second-fiddle role. Smith showed back in Round 8 against the Dragons that he has all the potential in the world, but he looks like being the odd man out when Walker returns. Walker will also take the goal-kicking duties from Smith, who might get a reprieve in the form of a bench utility role in Round 19. The good news, the only good news after that debacle, is that Sam Walker will finally return against the Dargons next week. — Bondi Roosters (@bondiroosters) July 6, 2025 The Tigers' win came with Jarome Luai, Api Koroisau and Jahream Bula all missing, and it marked their first victory over the Roosters since 2018. Benji Marshall's side are now just two wins out of the top-eight. "Regardless of the result, just the way the boys turned up today and actually fought, backs against the wall, given no chance, young side, new spine, players out of position," Marshall said. "We showed for most of that game a lot of the things we've been good at for the last four or five weeks. I'm just proud of the boys' effort." We missed our mark at the start, credit to the (the Tigers) how they attacked the game." with AAP

Trbojevic takes centre stage to bag double for Manly

Tom Trbojevic has shown signs of returning to his best, firing the Sea Eagles back into the NRL's top eight with a 30-12 win over South Sydney. Two games into his shift from fullback to centre, Trbojevic scored a double at Brookvale Oval on Sunday and set up another as Manly ran to a 24-0 lead. The win made it two straight for Manly after what had loomed as a crucial fortnight for coach Anthony Seibold, and consigned the Rabbitohs to six straight losses. TURBO 🚀 — NRL (@NRL) July 6, 2025 The main concern for South Sydney will be Brandon Smith, after he limped from the field with ankle injury late in his return game from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Playing his first game in nine months and featuring for Souths for the first time, Smith started and played two short stints before being hurt in a tackle. Smith's injury came on the same leg he ruptured his ACL last August, and adds to what has been a wretched few years of injuries for the Rabbitohs. As undermanned as the Rabbitohs may be, this was still a crucial win for Manly given the noise around Sydney's northern beaches a fortnight ago. Seibold said last week that he would reconsider Trbojevic's centre move after the Souths match, wanting his most dangerous man to get his confidence back. Trbojevic appears to have at least done that, running with power again in what was easily his best match since March. He regularly played a roaming role in attack, popping up on the left of the field to give Manly an extra number on that side of the field in attack. Even at 36, DCE still has it! 👏Sportsbet #TryJuly — NRL (@NRL) July 6, 2025 The Sea Eagles' first try came in that fashion, with Trbojevic linking up with new No.1 Lehi Hopoate on the left side of the field to send Reuben Garrick over. Trbojevic scored Manly's next himself when he again went in field searching for the ball, and created pressure by chasing through on a Daly Cherry-Evans kick. On the next play he made use of the broken defensive line and stepped through two to score. It was Trbojevic's second try after the break that showed the most promise, when he again took a ball on the left, charged infield and beat three to score. Trbojevic has starred as a roaming centre at representative level, but questions linger over defensive cohesion with two Souths tries coming late down his edge. The Sea Eagles have the bye next week before a difficult month against three of the NRL's top four, and they desperately need Trbojevic firing if they are to play finals. Manly hope to have Haumole Olakau'atu back as soon as after that bye, after a middle led by Matt Lodge able to overturn Souths' better early ball on Sunday. Garrick also scored a double in the win, while fellow winger Jason Saab appeared to suffer a lower-leg injury late.

Tigers stun Roosters for best win of Benji Marshall era

Wests Tigers have bitten back at their critics with the most significant win of the Benji Marshall era yet - a frantic 30-28 upset defeat of the Sydney Roosters that breathes life into their season. Under fire from all quarters this week amid the exit of gun junior Tallyn Da Silva and a six-game losing streak, the Tigers overcame the absences of Jarome Luai, Api Koroisau and Jahream Bula and rode a stunning 20-0 lead to one of the year's biggest boilovers. Latu Fainu had a career-best game to prove he's ready to replace Lachie Galvin in the halves, while new second-choice hooker Tristan Hope impressed in only his second NRL game by putting Sione Fainu over. In his first appearance against the Roosters since being inexplicably cut, Tigers prop Terrell May was immense at Allianz Stadium with a team-high 199 run metres. An admittedly undermanned Roosters side threatened to break the Tigers' hearts when James Tedesco burrowed over on the left side in the final 20 seconds, helping the Tricolours close to only two points behind. But with seven seconds left, the Roosters were stifled by the Tigers' defence and the visitors held on, Adam Doueihi having landed his third penalty goal minutes before. The Tigers' first defeat of the Roosters since 2018 puts the joint venture two wins out of the top eight to finish the weekend and vindicates Marshall's claims of improvement - albeit not always in results - during his second year as coach. Marshall had been adamant the Tigers were better than their recent form slump suggested and would have been buoyed when Starford To'a offloaded to Charlie Staines down the short-side for first points. Caught napping by that try, the Roosters were asleep at the wheel again when Savala spilt the ball cold on the 50-metre line, allowing Latu Fainu to regather and sprint to the line. Hope's flat ball to bench forward Sione Fainu made it a 20-point game and gave Tigers fans another glimpse into the bright future promised by the trio of brothers brought over from Manly. A rampaging Samuela Fainu! 🔥 — NRL (@NRL) July 6, 2025 The Tigers' defensive resolve was just as promising, with the visitors holding their hosts up over the tryline three separate times in the first half and withstanding 14 more red zone tackles than they enjoyed with the ball. Marshall's side would've been nervous when Mark Nawaqanitawase bulldozed through four defenders for his second try, which cut the lead to only six with four minutes to play. Tedesco's four-pointer pulled the Roosters closer than they'd been since Staines' opener, but time ran out to avoid an all-time Tigers upset.
