Lo'eau LaBonta makes historic debut as USA women ease past China in friendly

The Guardian2 days ago

Naomi Girma returned to the national team and Lo'eau LaBonta became the oldest player to make her international debut for the US in a 3-0 win over China on Saturday.
Catarina Macario, Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps scored while goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce got her second shutout in as many appearances.
LaBonta, the 32-year-old midfielder for the Kansas City Current in the National Women's Soccer League, came on as a second-half substitute.
The match also marked Girma's first appearance for the national team this year. The 24-year-old defender has been nursing injuries but recently returned to help Chelsea win the Women's Super League title and the FA Cup.
Girma commanded a record $1.1 transfer fee when she moved from the San Diego Wave to Chelsea earlier this year.
Tullis-Joyce, who plays for Manchester United, started in goal in just her second US appearance as coach Emma Hayes looks to replace goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who retired from the national team last year.
Macario scored her 11th international goal after Alyssa Thompson kept the ball alive in a tumble in front of the net in the 28th minute.
Coffey made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, taking a pass from Macario out front and banging her second goal for the US past goalkeeper Pan Hongyan with her left foot.
Heaps, the US captain, scored on a header in the 54th minute.
The United States are currently missing several key contributors from last year's Olympic gold medal-winning squad. Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson are both on maternity leave. Trinity Rodman is dealing with a nagging back issue.
The United States famously defeated China on penalties in the 1999 Women's World Cup final. The teams last met in 2023, with the Americans winning both games.
The Americans have a 39-9-13 overall record against China, including five straight.
The United States was coming off a 2-1 loss to Brazil on 8 April. China defeated Thailand 5-1 in their last outing.
The US face Jamaica on Tuesday in St Louis.

Patrick Mahomes left in disbelief as Kansas City Royals call up top prospect Jac Caglianone

It took fewer than 80 minor-league games, but Kansas City Royals phenom Jac Caglianone is already getting called up to the majors - and nobody is happier than Patrick Mahomes. The Royals minority owner and Chiefs quarterback reacted to the news on X, where ESPN's Jeff Passan revealed the 22-year-old Caglianone (pronounced: CAG-lee-ohn) is headed from Triple-A Omaha to Kansas City. Rather than using his own words to convey his excitement, Mahomes instead relied on a meme of Steve Carell's Michael Scott character from the office. 'Oh, my God!' Scott says in the clip. 'Okay, it's happening.' There was some confusion among fans about Mahomes' reaction, given that he grew up in the Dallas area and has a father who once pitched for the Texas Rangers in addition to a number of other teams in the majors and Japan. 'You're a Rangers fan!' one person wrote on X. Others wondered why Mahomes, who obtained a minority stake of the Royals in 2021, learned of the news after Passan. 'Shouldn't you be like the 1st person to know… your (sic) a owner?' another asked. Mahomes is hardly alone in his anticipation of Caglianone's arrival, who could pay dividends for a surprisingly competitive Royals club in the American League Central. Kansas City currently sits at 21-29, which is eight games back of first-place Detroit, but right in the thick of the wildcard chase. Manager Matt Quatraro's pitchers rank fourth in the majors in earned-run average (3.13), but the offense is tied for 28th in runs scored. Enter Caglianone, a punishing left-handed hitter who could complement a lineup highlighted by righties Bobby Witt Jr., Jonathan India, Salvador Perez and Maikel Garcia. A pitcher and first baseman at Florida, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Caglianone has abandoned the mound in favor of the batter's box, where he's flourished since being picked sixth overall in last year's MLB Draft. Over just 79 minor-league games across High-A, Double-A and Triple-A, Caglianone hit .292 with an impressive .358 on-base percentage and a robust .517 slugging percentage thanks to 17 home runs and 18 doubles. He also comes from a baseball hotbed in Tampa, where he attended the same high school as Hall-of-Famer Wade Boggs and current New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso.

Aluminium premium for US buyers soars after Trump doubles tariffs

LONDON, June 2 (Reuters) - Premiums for consumers buying aluminium on the physical market in the United States soared on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he planned to increase tariffs on imported steel and aluminium to 50% from 25%. The U.S. is heavily reliant on aluminium imports. About half of all aluminium used in the country for transport, packaging and construction is delivered from elsewhere, with the vast majority coming from Canada. The new tariffs are due to take effect on June 4. Buyers on the physical market usually pay the London Metal Exchange (LME) benchmark aluminium price plus a premium covering taxes, transport and handling costs. The U.S. Midwest duty-paid aluminium premium reached $0.58 per lb, or $1,279 a metric ton, on Monday. That was a 54% jump from Friday and 164% growth since the start of 2025. Part of Monday's growth was amplified by June 2 being the first trading day of the new month, when regional premiums often make a strong move. Goldman Sachs said the premium would need to rise to between $0.68 and $0.70 per lb to fully reflect the 50% import tariff. LME benchmark aluminium was last up 0.2% at $2,448.5 a ton.
