Brian Wilson, founding member and main songwriter of the Beach Boys, has died, aged 82.
The news of the singer-songwriter's passing was shared by his family on Instagram. The post reads: "We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. "We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving."We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy."
No cause of death has yet been disclosed.
One of the most respected and admired musicians ever to work within the field of pop music, Wilson was born on June 20, 1942 in Inglewood, California. He co-founded the Beach Boys with his brothers Dennis and Carl, their cousin Mike Love, and close friend Al Jardine in 1961, and the group were signed to Capitol Records the following year. The defining sound of Californian youth culture in the early '60s, Beach Boys went on to become the most iconic and successful American band of the decade, scoring Top 10 Billboard chart singles with songs such as Surfin' USA, Fun, Fun Fun, I Get Around , California Girls, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Good Vibrations and many more.
In 1964, Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown and elected to withdraw from touring with the group to concentrate on songwriting and production. His group's acknowledged masterpiece, 1966's Pet Sounds, has been widely acclaimed as one of the greatest albums ever, with Wilson recognised by musicians worldwide as a songwriting genius for his innovative, groundbreaking and hugely influential compositional skills, his use of complex harmonies, his arrangements and orchestration. "I believe that without Brian Wilson's inspiration, Sgt Pepper might have been less of the phenomenon that it became,' Beatles producer George Martin is quoted as saying in Charles L Granata's book Brian Wilson And The Making Of Pet Sounds. 'Brian is a living genius of pop music. Like The Beatles, he pushed forward the frontiers of popular music."Beach Boys have sold sold more than 100 million records worldwide, according to their website.
Last year it was revealed that Wilson was suffering from dementia, and was placed in a conservatorship, overseen by his manager and US publicist.
The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood was one of the first musicians to pay tribute to Wilson following the announcement of his death."Oh no, Brian Wilson and Sly Stone in one week ~ my world is in mourning," Wood posted on X. "So sad."
In his own tribute, John Lennon's son Sean hailed Wilson as "our American Mozart."

Remembering Sly Stone and Brian Wilson

This week, pop music lost a pair of world builders: Sly Stone, who created visionary psychedelic rock, soul and pop that helped integrate popular music and captured harsh social realities under the guise of big-tent cheer; and Brian Wilson, the macher of the Beach Boys, whose ear for elevated harmony helped create some of the defining sounds of the 1960s. Both men were 82. Wilson and Stone excelled in a moment in which the country was shaking off the staidness of the 1950s. Wilson's work with the Beach Boys initially took on themes of American freedom before evolving into a more complex outfit on 'Pet Sounds.' After that album, Wilson descended into mental instability, and remained largely out of view for decades. Stone had his commercial peak in the early 1970s with up-tempo funk numbers riven deep with social meaning. But he, too, lost his grip on his career, and was heard from only intermittently in subsequent years. On this week's Popcast, a conversation about Stone's improvisational genius, how he channeled his social moment through music, and what it took to turn the life stories of Stone and Wilson into books and film. Guests: Ben Greenman, a longtime journalist who collaborated with Stone on 'Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin): A Memoir' and Wilson on 'I Am Brian Wilson' Joseph Patel, a producer of the documentary 'Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius)' Vernon Reid, a rock musician who was the founder of Living Colour and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition Connect With Popcast. That got me hunting for the kind of flowers one would scatter down the aisle at a wedding ceremony. I was a page boy at a wedding when I was a toddler, the memory of which still haunts me thanks to the tartan kilt and beret I had to reluctantly wear – a feeling that gave me a lifelong loathing of fancy dress – but my duties didn't include throwing petals. I digress. The relatively rare letters V and Z made VIOLET and AZALEA easy to spot, with the most tricky petal for me being PETUNIA. How did you do today? Let me know in the comments below.
