Pastel art is thriving in New Zealand, says a master pastellist.
Tricia Taylor was in Alexandra recently to attend the Pastel Artists of New Zealand convention.
She judged entries in the Pastel Artists of New Zealand National Exhibition which is now on display at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery.
The exhibit is a celebration of pastel art from across the country, showcasing works by both established and emerging artists.
Ms Taylor said the standard of work in the exhibition was fantastic.
"[There was] a variety of subject matter from portrait to landscapes, flowers and abstracts showed a range of genre that gave the exhibition a lot of interest."
One painting that was also a varnished work on canvas also showed the diversity of the medium, she said.
The society had different levels of membership from Masters, Distinguished artists and Artist members along with general membership, so there was artwork from each level ranging from professional artists to hobby artists.
"The exhibition is well worth the look to see such a quality exhibition of pastels all in one gallery."
New Zealand has had a thriving Pastel Society for more than 18 years and membership was growing, she said.
Advances in the paper and pastel quality and availability was increasing all the time as pastels continued to grow in popularity.
Ms Taylor said she had visited Central Otago many times.
"Of course, autumn is spectacular and my favourite for painting.
"I have brought artists to the area for painting holidays painting en plein air (outdoors)."
She said the autumn colours and mountain ranges were always a highlight.
"It is a very special and unique part of the world.
"I have travelled extensively and there is nothing quite like it.
"The friendliness of the people just adds that special touch to any holiday here."
Ms Taylor started working in pastels in 1996 and became a Master Pastellist with the Australian Pastel Society in 2011.
The exhibition runs at Central Stories until May 4.

Ocean Alley Announce Fifth Album Love Balloon & Release Infectious Title Track
Globally renowned Australian rockers Ocean Alley are thrilled to announce their fifth studio album, Love Balloon, set for release on September 19 via Community Music. Alongside the news, the six-piece have dropped the record's infectious title track. Joyful and uplifting, 'Love Balloon' offers a blissful glimpse into the band's creative direction on their upcoming album - confident, exploratory and full of character. Anchored by an irresistible groove and a shimmering Nile Rodgers-inspired guitar riff, the track threads an unexpected touch of disco flair along its pulsating bassline, marking playful new territory for the band. It feels effortlessly spontaneous, echoing the carefree energy of previous singles 'Tangerine' and 'Left Of The Dealer'. It's charming, lighthearted, and above all, fun. Working with legendary producer Nick DiDia (Bruce Springsteen, Powderfinger, Rage Against The Machine) for the first time, the band embraced a stripped-back, more emotionally resonant approach to Love Balloon. Across 10 tracks, they take listeners on a journey through life and love in all its complexity, underscored by moments of light, vulnerability and connection. There are moments that feel expansive and hopeful, and others that are more introspective and raw. It's not ignorant of our inner worlds or the world outside - it offers an escape from it. On the record, keyboardist and vocalist Lach Galbraith explained, ' The album explores the many layered dimensions of love - not just the cinematic kind where you're falling head over heels, but the full spectrum: joy, hurt, discomfort and disappointment. Let's call it the river of love - whether it's with a partner, a friend, or family, you never know when it'll get deep, go shallow, or suddenly change course. It's such a force that you have to just surrender to its current. ' With a reputation for their magnetic live performances, and a catalogue that's now surpassed 1 billion streams, Ocean Alley have a huge run of international dates to come throughout 2025. They are making appearances at iconic festivals including Lollapalooza, Sziget and Austin City Limits, alongside shows at LA's Hollywood Palladium and Brooklyn Paramount in New York. The group will make their first trip to Latin America with shows in Mexico, Brasil and Chile, before taking on their largest headline show to date, anywhere in the world - at London's iconic 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace in September. Ocean Alley have truly emerged as one of Australia's most successful musical exports. Across four albums, including 2022's critically acclaimed Low Altitude Living, the six-piece - Baden Donegal (vocals), Angus Goodwin (guitar), Lach Galbraith (keys/vocals), Mitch Galbraith (guitar), Tom O'Brien (drums) and Nic Blom (bass) - have inspired audiences around the world with their unmistakable sound. With chart success across Australia, New Zealand, the UK and USA, and 12 accredited singles of Gold or higher in Aotearoa, Ocean Alley are entering a bold new chapter - and with stadium-sized ambition in sight, they're poised to leave an enduring mark on the music landscape for many years to come.

The Terrys – Share Earnest Single ‘Eraser' Ahead Of Forthcoming Self-Titled Album
Press Release – Good Intent Beloved Gerringong indie outfit The Terrys return with their reflective single ' Eraser ', from their forthcoming self-titled album – out Friday, June 13 through Westway Collective. Pre-order vinyl HERE + HERE. 'Eraser' leans into sombre acoustic textures, pairing delicate guitar lines with Jacob 'Finchie' Finch 's raw, emotive vocals. Produced by longtime collaborators Tasker, Paddy Cornwall, and Taras Hrubyj-Piper, the track offers a moment of quiet introspection — a stripped-back exploration of memory, loss, and letting go. 'Eraser' reveals a softer side of The Terrys — one that trades in big hooks for hushed, heartfelt resonance. Accompanying the album is The Terrys' biggest national headline tour to date, including stops in Meanjin/Brisbane, Tarndayna/Adelaide, Boorloo/Perth, Naarm/Melbourne, Eora/Sydney, Nipaluna/Hobart and Lutruwita/Forth. A central aim of this tour from the band was for it to be affordable for all fans, hence the ticket price of $35. This continues on from selling out shows across Australia, the UK, EU & NZ and playing Australian mainstays Beyond The Valley, Chasing Tides, Hay Park, Spaced Out Festival, Yours & Owls, NYE on the Hill, Rolling Sets and Festival of the Sun. Recently, they also played the Too Turped Up Weekender across Wagga Wagga and Albury. Last year, the band went from strength to strength, with their sophomore album ' Skate Pop ' debuting at #2 on the ARIA Album Chart and landing a coveted triple j Feature Album spot. The singles also appeared at #93 (' No Bad Days '), #103 (' Hopscotch ') and #181 (' Silent Disco ') in triple j's Hottest 100 (2023). Their first record ' True Colour ' also debuted at #3 on the ARIA Album Chart. The Terrys' true north has always been this: stay positive, take it one day at a time and look towards the horizon with a smile and, ideally, beer in hand. 'Eraser' is available worldwide now The Terrys Self-Titled Album will be available Friday, July 11, via Westway Collective Pre-order vinyl HERE + HERE THE TERRYS ALBUM TOUR DATES Tickets available at
