The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Deserve It All—and More
Well before the second season of America's Sweethearts premiered on Netflix this week, I knew what I wanted to say about it. In November, I'd spent a game day embedded with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders as the Cowboys played the Texans—though 'day' isn't exactly right. The squad worked for more than 12 hours straight, pulling a shift that stretched from Monday morning to the early hours of Tuesday. Sure, some of that time was spent on buses to and from the Star, the Cowboys' headquarters in Frisco, Texas, and some was spent on hair and makeup. (The cheerleaders are responsible for their own professional-level glam, which demands a lot of powder and a lot of time wielding a Dyson.) But most of those hours were spent dancing: 'Thunderstuck,' their pre-kick-off routine, involves both a 50-yard sprint in under eight seconds (in cowboy boots!) and chorus line jump splits. By the end of the night, the whole team was dripping in sweat and covered in blisters, their pantyhose ripped from their high kicks. Many required trainers for various muscle ailments, or to help wrap their ankles. There were dozens of ice packs, foam rollers, and empty Gatorade bottles scattered across the locker-room floor. But there would be no rest for the pom-pom weary: They had practice the next day, and the day after that. They had all the football games, the corporate shows, the press junkets, and the Cowboys Christmas Spectacular. They had major appearances with Kacey Musgraves, at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, and at Mike Tyson's fight with Jake Paul in Las Vegas. Netflix camera crews were everywhere, as was our team from Vogue. Everyone stood to profit from their glamorous image—everyone, that is, except for the cheerleaders themselves. Their pay was about $15 an hour and $500 for each appearance. Most had to support themselves with other jobs. They did not have health insurance. Once upon a time, that made a kind of sense. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader squad as we now know it came about in the 1970s. It was advertised as a part-time gig: You had a few practices during the week and performed during the Sunday games. Half a century later, between Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, Pro Bowls, and countless more events, the DCCC are working 30 to 40 hours a week for much of the year, and the Cowboys franchise is worth $11 billion dollars—three billion more than any other team in the National Football League. Their branding as 'America's team,' complete with an unabashed commitment to a stars-and-stripes, yeehaw aesthetic, has made their image endlessly exportable and mineable. Go anywhere in the world, and people know about the Dallas Cowboys—whether they're winning or not. (In 2024, their record was 7-10.)

The Texas Rangers Are Approaching An Inflection Point
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Kumar Rocker throws during the first inning of a baseball game ... More against the Chicago White Sox, Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. (AP Photo/LM Otero) What kind of team are the Texas Rangers? Almost halfway through the season, we still don't have an answer. At 36-39, they could still finish anywhere from first to last in the American League West, and no outcome would be too surprising. The club is approaching an inflection point in the 2025 season, not just because they need to go on a run if they want to contend for the playoffs, but because the front office has decide whether they'll be buyers or sellers before the trade deadline. The Rangers have a lot of key players who have been disappointing, inconsistent, or unhealthy for much of the year. They could either stabilize and right the ship, or flatline and sink the season. Rangers Hitters Their best hitters haven't been veterans Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, or Joc Pederson. Seager hasn't found his power stroke, posting a .387 slugging percentage that is 120 points below his career average. He also missed about a month's worth of games with two separate injuries in April and May. His .714 OPS is a little bit higher than the MLB average, but it's the lowest mark of his 11-year career by far. Semien and Pederson have been negatives at the plate. The former is hitting .226/.306/.337 with an 88 OPS+, indicating his offense has been 12% below average, and the latter was hitting .131/.269/.238 before going on the injured list with a fractured hand on May 24. Their best hitter has been the less-heralded Josh Smith, who leads the club with a 132 OPS+ and has started games at every position except catcher and pitcher this year. He was Seager's replacement at shortstop when he was hurt, but he has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury. Wyatt Langford has emerged as a solid hitter with a 118 OPS+, but his former top prospect counterpart Evan Carter has continued to befuddle the organization. He has bounced between the major and minor leagues and dealt with minor ailments, so he has only 80 plate appearances for the Rangers this year, but he's hitting a healthy .254/.338/.465. However, 10 of his 18 hits came over a four-game stretch from June 8 to June 12 in which he went 10-16. Outside of those games, he's only 8-55. Rangers Pitchers Two of the Rangers' best starting pitchers are out of action for the time being. Nathan Eovaldi's 1.56 ERA through 12 starts would be the best in MLB if he had enough innings to qualify, but he's on the shelf with triceps inflammation. He's joined on the IL by Tayler Mahle, who has a sore shoulder and owns a 2.34 ERA despite a low 18.2% strikeout rate. Two older hurlers have been better than expected for Texas. Jacob deGrom hasn't thrown more than 92 innings in a season since 2019, but the 37-year-old has a 2.19 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP, and hasn't missed a start. Patrick Corbin had ERAs ranging from 5.20 to 6.31 over this last four years with the Washington Nationals, but it's down to 3.91 this season. No one knows what to make of their two highly-regarded young arms. Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker were teammates at Vanderbilt who were both drafted in the top ten overall. Leiter has been reliable, if unexceptional. He's maintaining a 4.40 ERA and a 4.91 FIP. His 97.7 mph fastball isn't blowing hitters away, and he's fanning only 18.9% of them. Rocker was a disaster through his first six starts, posting an 8.87 ERA and getting demoted twice, but he threw five shutout innings in his most recent outing. Right now, the Rangers don't have a fifth starter in their rotation. They'll have to make a decision about what to do in the next few days, which serves as a metaphor for their entire season. They need their pitching to get and stay healthy, their big bats to produce more offense, and their youngsters like Carter and Rocker to do more than tantalize their potential.

Florida standout Jac Caglianone launches first two home runs of MLB career
Former Florida Gators slugger Jac Caglianone has been the hot talk among rising Major League Baseball prospects, and on Thursday night he reached one of the first of many milestones in his nacent professional career. The lefthanded first baseman, outfielder and designated hitter — as well as pitcher — slugged his first MLB home run against the Texas Rangers in Arlington. Caglianone's first dinger was a solo shot off a 95.5 mph two-seam fastball served up by southpaw Jacob Latz above the strike zone, which he sent 387 feet with an exit velocity of 106.5 mph into the stands; according to Statcast, the round-tripper was good enough to leave the park in 17 of 30 MLB parks. Cags grounded his next two times up, but in his fourth at-bat of the day, he went deep once again with another solo shot. This time, he slugged an 85.8 mph first-pitch slider from lefty Robert Garcia 439 feet thanks to a staggering 110.2 mph exit velocity — a towering shot that was out of the park in every single MLB venue this season. Advertisement He finished the day 2-for-4 before being subbed out for John Rave in right field as a defensive replacement. For the 2025 campaign, Caglianone has played in 14 games, stringing together a .218/.232/.364 slashline along with a pair of doubles, the two newly-minted home runs, four runs batted in and 12 strikeouts against one walk. Both his Fangraphs and Baseball Reference WAR values are currently in the negative, but if his performance on Thursday night was any indication, his value should be positive sooner rather than later.
