Luke Littler shows true feelings with four-word statement after winning Phil Taylor Trophy
Luke Littler won his first World Matchplay crown as James Wade's remarkable run in Blackpool fell at the final hurdle and declared: "It means absolutely everything!"
Littler claimed a hard-fought 18-13 victory at the Winter Gardens to become the fifth player to win the PDC Triple Crown – Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and Luke Humphries having also won World Championship, Matchplay and Premier League titles. Wade was in his seventh Matchplay final 18 years on from his solitary success in 2007, which came six months after Littler was born.
Littler's scoring power in a high-quality contest proved decisive – he hit 17 180s to Wade's six in averaging 107 – and set a new tournament record of 64 maximums, beating Adrian Lewis' previous best of 56.
'It means absolutely everything,' Littler told Sky Sports after winning the last four legs to hold the Phil Taylor Trophy aloft. 'I idolise Phil, he's come here 16 times and won it. Now my name is on this trophy – and I can say I've completed the Triple Crown.
'Since I started on the Tour and got my Tour card I've always said to myself, 'as long as I win one of every major I'll be happy.' I've only got a few left to tick off and I'll definitely chase the majors I haven't won yet.'
Littler had to mount another comeback 24 hours after losing the first five legs of his semi-final to Northern Ireland's Josh Rock. Wade stormed into a 5-0 lead but did not have a single dart at a double in the second mini-session as Littler levelled in style.
The 42-year-old left-hander produced an 11-darter in the next, but Littler responded by winning successive legs to lead for the first time at 7-6. Wade managed to keep in touch, helped by a bull finish in the 19th leg, and fought back from a double break down to cut the gap to just one at 14-13.
But Littler pulled away and crossed the line in style with a 115 out shot (20-57-38), the biggest finish of the match.
'A little bit,' Littler said when asked if he had felt in control. 'Five-nil down once again, I said, 'I've been here before, what are you doing?'
'But I managed to pull it out of the bag and win the next five. I've shown I can come back from 5-0 or 7-3 down. I'm happy I can pull myself out of these scorelines, but I don't want to be 5-0 down again.
'James started to drop off a bit and I started to find my best darts.'
By winning the title 18-year-old Littler became the youngest ever champion in Matchplay history, six years younger than Wade when he lifted the title.

FedEx Cup playoff field set; Gary Woodland, Adam Scott miss cut
August 4 - The PGA Tour solidified its field of 70 golfers for the FedEx Cup playoffs following the final round of the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, and Gary Woodland was among a host of notable names that failed to qualify. Germany's Matti Schmid began the regular-season finale sitting 70th in the points standings, and he finished exactly where he started after tying for 31st in the tournament. Chris Kirk was the only player to climb in from outside the top 70. He tied for fifth at 14 under with four rounds in the 60s, and it was enough to boost him from 73rd entering the week to 61st. The one player who lost his spot: South Korea's Byeong Hun An, who missed the cut at the Wyndham and dropped from 69th to 74th in points as a result. Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, had an outside shot of entering the top 70 as he began the tournament in 75th place. Woodland opened with rounds of 67 and 64 to be near the top of the leaderboard after Friday, but back-to-back 70s on the weekend weren't enough. He tied for 23rd at the Wyndham and finished the season 72nd in points. Woodland was attempting to make the playoffs for the first time since he underwent surgery for a brain lesion in 2023. The first man out was Davis Thompson, who nearly rocketed from 78th place by tying for 11th at the Wyndham. Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark had a fine season and contended at last month's Open Championship but finished 73rd in points. Australian Adam Scott fired a 65 on the first day of the Wyndham but was pedestrian from there. He needed a victory to catapult from 85th to the top 70, but instead dropped back to 90th in points at season's end. Further down the list were Joel Dahmen (No. 93), South Korea's Tom Kim (No. 94) and Max Homa (No. 111). Defending FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler holds a large lead over Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy as the top 70 players head to the FedEx St. Jude Championship this week in Memphis, Tenn. The next number to watch is No. 50, as only the top 50 after Memphis will advance to the second leg of the playoffs. Australia's Min Woo Lee currently holds the 50th spot. Notable players currently on the outside include Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas (No. 56), Tony Finau (No. 60) and Rickie Fowler (No. 64). --Field Level Media

‘That's cringe' – Fans want India DISQUALIFIED from England Test series for Mohammed Siraj's celebration
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ENGLAND cricket fans have fumed that India should be disqualified from their Test match victory after Mohammed Siraj's 'cringe' celebration. Siraj, 31, didn't hold back during his celebrations after India stunned England to win the Fifth Test by six runs. 7 Mohammed Siraj riled up England fans with his celebration after India won the Fifth Test to draw the series Credit: Getty 7 Siraj emulated Cristiano Ronaldo's famous celebration Credit: Getty 7 Siraj bowled out Gus Atkinson to win the Test Credit: Getty Siraj and his team-mates pulled off a devastating showing as they took three wickets in just over 30 minutes of play to leave an injured Chris Woakes needing to take to the crease with his arm in a sling. Woakes, who has been out of the series since dislocating his shoulder on day one of the final Test, was forced to come out and partner Gus Atkinson and bat with ONE HAND as England searched for just 17 runs to win the series. The drama came to an end when Siraj bowled out Atkinson to win the Test and draw the series. And the fast-bowler made sure everyone packed inside The Oval knew exactly how much it meant to him as he leapt up and celebrated by emulating Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Siu' celebration in the middle of the pitch. But England fans were left furious by the celebration, slamming it as "cringe" and excessive. One fan wrote: "I just cringed so hard at Siraj pulling the Siu in the middle of The Oval." While another added: "That celebration is shocking". A third fumed: "Why are they celebrating like they won the whole thing?" 7 Cristiano Ronaldo is well known for his 'Siu' celebration Credit: Getty 7 Chris Woakes came out to bat one-handed with a dislocated shoulder Credit: AFP 7 Woakes was clearly in pain as he ran between the stumps Credit: Getty CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS And a fourth even suggested India should be disqualified, writing: "India should be disqualified from winning that purely on the basis of Siraj doing Ronaldo's celebration. God that's cringe". Others praised Siraj for his moment of brilliance that tied the series for India. Chris Woakes bats one-handed with arm in sling as Piers Morgan leads stunned reaction One wrote: "Siraj, what a spell. And that celebration… chills. When Ronaldo is your idol, greatness isn't a choice, it's fate." And a second posted: "Yeah, Siraj has got that clutch Ronaldo gene". England captain Ben Stokes said that his team were "bitterly disappointed" not to get over the line and win the series following India's dramatic final Test victory. He told Sky Sports: "Both teams have put so much energy and effort into this whole series, it's been an amazing one to be a part of. "Obviously bitterly disappointed that we couldn't get over the line here, but [it's been] a series that has made me very proud of my team and everything they've thrown into this. "We obviously would have loved to have come away with the series win but it wasn't meant to be".

Kent excited about Aberdeen test
Frankie Kent believes it is good to test yourself against top teams early on in the season and Aberdeen are the visitors to Tynecastle on Monday night (kick-off 8pm) as Hearts open their campaign in the William Hill Premiership. The big defender believes the Scottish Cup holders are, in his words, 'a good team' and the opening clash in the William Hill Premiership, live on Sky Sports, with a full-house inside Tynecastle, is, according to Kent, a barometer of where the Jambos are since new head coach, Derek McInnes, took over. The former Arsenal Academy player said: 'It's a fresh start, a fresh season, and we are trying to build off the pre-season we have had, the positivity around the place, and are looking to putting that into the first game. 'Monday should be good, I'm excited and all the boys are as well. We aim to get off to a positive start.' Kent said there had been a massive change in the squad which is now a big group, but the players have spent a lot of time together, including a week of warm-weather training in Spain which helped the players bond. The 29-year-old added: 'We have good characters and good attitudes in the group and they have mixed with what we already had here, which was a quality group. Everybody has gelled quite well.' The squad is the biggest he has been involved with and that breeds competition for places. He added: 'Training, since we got back, has been very high intensity, everybody trying to impress and prove themselves and be in the squad and be a valued member of the squad. 'It is exciting to see and you need that re-fresh at times. It is nice as players to have that motivation.' Kent had more of what he called a 'back seat' last season because of injury, but he added that the squad felt they were capable of making the top six but did not meet the standards required. He stressed: 'We want to put that right and we are excited to do that.' Frankie Kent Like this: Like Related
