President, Guv, CM greet people as Raja festival begins in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, President Droupadi Murmu, Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik on Saturday greeted the people of Odisha as the three-day Raja festival began across the state.
The state welcomes the Raja festival every year as a mark of respect for womanhood, fertility, and the rhythms of Mother Earth. This time, the festival reflecting deep-rooted traditions and cultural pride, is observed between June 14 and 16.
President Murmu, who hails from Odisha, posted on X: "I am wishing my dear countrymen heartily on the occasion of Raja festival. On the arrival of rainy season, honouring Mother Earth this agrarian festival is observed by eating sweets, playing swings, kabaddi and betel and sweet drinks. This festival is celebrated for three days in Odisha. From this, we should take inspiration from walking in harmony with nature."
She also said, "On the occasion of Raja festival, I wish happiness and prosperity for the state and the countrymen."
The X handle of Governor Odisha said: "On the occasion of Krishivithik Gana Parv # Raja the Hon'ble Governor Shri @DrHariBabuK has extended his greetings and best wishes and wished that the eternal spirit of this festival may be felt by all. #RajaParba."
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who hails from Keonjhar district, where Raja is a major festival, also wished the people of the state.
"Greetings and best wishes to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Gana Parva, a unique tradition of honouring tradition, nature, motherhood and womanhood. May this festival bring joy and happiness to everyone's lives.#Raja #PahiliRaja," he said.
Former chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik also congratulated the people on the occasion and said: "Heartiest greetings to everyone on the occasion of Odisha's mass festival, Raja. May this unique tradition of paying homage to the land and mother fill everyone's lives with joy and happiness. #RajaParba."
The nomenclature of the festival 'Raja' is rooted in the Sanskrit word 'Rajaswala' . Raja marks a symbolic period when Mother Earth is believed to rest and rejuvenate, like women during their menstrual cycle, said Asit Mohanty, a researcher in Odia culture. He said that the festival also witness the beginning of cultivation works which comes coinciding with the onset of the monsoon month 'Asadha'.
During the festival, young girls and women rejoice by wearing new clothes, applying henna and alta, playing traditional games, enjoying swings called - 'Raja Doli', and eating festive foods, mostly handmade cakes. Special sweets like Poda Pitha, Arisha, Kakara, and others are prepared at houses and offered to guests, Mohanty said.
The festival unfolds in four phases. The first day of the festival is called - 'Pahili Raja' , middle day is 'Raja Sankranti' , first day of Asadha, celebrating seasonal transition and 'Basi Raja' , the last day of the festival.
At the end of the festival, the women in houses observe a ritual called 'Basumati Snana' when the mother earth is bathed after her menstruation period, Mohanty said.
He said the girls are exempt from household work, and no farming or digging is done, showing reverence to nature's fertility during the three-day Raja festival.
Raja festivals are held across the state including state capital of Bhubaneswar.

The recruitment drive spans five departments, with the works department receiving 563 appointees. Other departments include water resources with 62 posts, panchayati raj and drinking water with 117, housing and urban development with 204, and food supply and consumer welfare with 18 positions. Majhi highlighted his govt's commitment to accelerating employment opportunities in both public and private sectors. "We have set an ambitious target of filling 1,50,000 govt positions within five years, with 65,000 posts to be filled in the first two years," he said. The CM said that 28,346 appointments were already made, marking a historic achievement. "The private sector absorbed 45,000 youths in the first year alone, bringing the total employment figure to 73,346 across both sectors," said Majhi, highlighting the state's decision to raise the age limit for govt employment to 42 years. He also said that strict laws were enacted to make the recruitment process transparent, fair and corruption-free. The CM urged the appointees to maintain integrity and remain committed to public service while implementing govt welfare activities for the state's development. "The Utkarsh Odisha 2025 initiative attracted 1.7 million investments across 16 sectors, potentially creating 1.29 million job opportunities. Within five months of its launch, 56 industrial establishments were inaugurated, promising 1,10,000 jobs," a govt statement read. Food supplies minister Krushna Chandra Patra, housing minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra and works minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, among others, were present.

Bhubaneswar, June 16 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday urged newly recruited government employees to work with determination, remain above corruption, and ensure the effective implementation of all government welfare programmes. Addressing a recruitment fair organized to fill 964 posts across five government departments, Majhi emphasised the government's commitment to harnessing the energy, potential, and enthusiasm of the youth for the state's development and welfare. At the recruitment fair, appointments were made to 563 posts in the Works Department, 62 in the Water Resources Department, 117 in the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, 204 in the Housing and Urban Development Department, and 18 in the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department. The posts included Junior Engineer, Junior Enforcement Officer, Tracer, Legal Metrology Inspector, and Junior Accountant. Congratulating the newly appointed employees, the Chief Minister expressed hope that they would serve with dedication, address public concerns, and strive to meet the aspirations of the people, considering themselves as true public servants. He noted that since the new government assumed office, significant employment opportunities have been created in both government and private sectors — a stark contrast to the slow pace of the past few years. 'The government has set a target to fill 1.5 lakh government posts over the next five years. So far, 28,346 government jobs have been provided, which is a historic achievement for us,' Majhi said. He further stated that, beyond the public sector, 45,000 youths have also been employed in the private sector in the government's first year in office. 73,346 youths employed in 369 days: Odisha CM Majhi
Bhubaneswar, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday said his government has facilitated employment for 73,346 youths in just 369 days since taking office. Speaking at the 'Nijukti Mela' , where appointment letters were distributed to 964 newly recruited youths, mostly junior engineers, Majhi said, "Our government is only one year and four days old. In this short span, we have appointed 73,346 youths — 28,346 in government departments and 45,000 in the private sector." Underlining the importance of government jobs, Majhi said he and his ministers failed to bag government jobs and therefore opted for other professions like politics. However, the newly recruited youths are lucky to get absorbed in the government sector, he said. "People have an obsession with government jobs. This is clearly shown in the Hindi film 'Nayak', where the heroine's father refuses to marry her off to a journalist and insists on a government servant. That reflects how highly people value government service," Majhi told the gathering. Majhi added, "Only two per cent of Odisha's population are in government jobs. That's why we are actively creating jobs in the private sector." He said the state has finalised investments worth ₹13 lakh crore, expected to generate 12.90 lakh private-sector jobs. "Once these industries are set up, large numbers of jobs will be created for our youth," he emphasised. Calling youths the "pilots of Odisha's development chariot," Majhi said, "We are committed to channelling the energy, potential, and enthusiasm of the youth for the state's development and social welfare." Of the 964 recruits, 907 are junior engineers who, he said, "will contribute significantly to infrastructure and growth." He expressed hope that the newly recruited youths would work with honesty and dedication. "Always remember, your actions and decisions at the government level must reflect public interest. You are servants of the people," he told them. Majhi added that the government plans to recruit 1.5 lakh youths in the state service over the next five years. "Around 65,000 posts will be filled in the first two years. Till date, 28,346 government posts have been filled," he said, adding that the age limit for government jobs has been raised from 32 years to 42 years. Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister KC Patra, Works Minister Prithivi Raj Harichandan, Housing and Urban Development Minister KC Mohapatra and Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Nayak were also present on the occasion.
