AUS honours philanthropic partnerships shaping future of education
SHARJAH (WAM)The American University of Sharjah (AUS) celebrated its philanthropic partners who are helping shape the future of education during the AUS Donor Appreciation Get-Together, held on campus in the presence of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS.Speaking at the event, Sheikha Bodour said, 'At AUS we see philanthropy as a powerful expression of belief in the potential of education to change lives. Our donors are part of a living tradition that began with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and continues today in every opportunity we provide for students to learn, grow, and lead. The achievements we celebrate are proof of what is possible when we invest in people as well as institutions.'The event brought together philanthropists, alumni, partners and friends of the university to recognise those whose support continues to drive AUS forward. Among the distinguished guests was Sir Magdi Yacoub, world-renowned heart surgeon and philanthropist, who joined the celebration as a guest of honour, underscoring the shared values of compassion, education and service that define the AUS donor community.Dr. Giacomo Chiozza, Sir Easa Saleh Al Gurg Professorship holder and Professor of Political Science at AUS, served as master of ceremonies, reflecting on the power of partnership in academic life. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Sheikha Bodour, who emphasised AUS's responsibility to foster inclusion, drive innovation and prepare the next generation of changemakers with the support of its donor community.Guests were welcomed at the AUS Rotunda by university leadership, faculty and student ambassadors.Donors were invited to share messages in the commemorative Book of Memoir. A curated exhibition highlighting student-led research, creative projects and sustainability initiatives made possible through philanthropic support was also on display.In a special moment of the evening, donors were formally honoured by Sheikha Bodour and Dr. Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, in recognition of their contributions to the university's continued progress. Our donors are catalysts for growth, empowering us to drive innovation, expand access and amplify the university's impact regionally and globally,' said Dr. Laursen.The programme honoured contributions across several categories, including student scholarships, endowed chairs and professorships, zakat-based giving, naming facilities, commemorative benches and tree legacy initiatives.A fireside chat between Sir Magdi Yacoub, world-renowned heart surgeon and philanthropist, and Badr Jafar, Special Envoy for Business and Philanthropy, UAE, was one of the highlights of the evening.The dialogue explored the broader role of giving in driving progress across education, healthcare and society, while emphasising the lasting impact of structured philanthropy and the role of long-term investment in building institutional resilience.'It is profoundly moving to stand among individuals who understand that the true pillars of a flourishing society are education, innovation and compassion,' said Sir Yacoub. Sharjah Ruler approves 1578 new scholarships for undergraduates
31 July 2025 16:18 SHARJAH (WAM)His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has approved 1578 new scholarships for Emirati students for various undergraduate programmes at the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah for the 2025-2026 academic announcement was made by Amna Al Owais, who is in charge of the Scholarship Programme at the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA). Al Owais also mentioned that the deadline for submitting scholarship applications has been extended to Sunday, August 10, giving students who haven't finished their applications more time to apply.

Sheikha Bodour Becomes University of Leicester's 1st Honorary Professor
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), was formally conferred the title of Honorary Professor by the University of Leicester, a distinction given for the first time in the university's history. The ceremony took place at the School of Business's Brookfield Campus and was led by Professor Henrietta O'Connor and Professor Dan Ladley. This prestigious recognition honours her exceptional contributions to women's empowerment, child literacy, and cultural development on a regional and international scale. Connecting Cross-Cultural Academia and Creativity During her visit, Sheikha Bodour engaged with faculty and students and took part in a discussion on museum studies and research within the cultural sector—underscoring her commitment to international academic collaboration and cultural understanding. Championing Literacy, Inclusion, and Publishing Innovation As the founder and CEO of Kalimat Group, Sheikha Bodour has overseen the publication of over 500 socially conscious Arabic children's books across 15+ countries. Her Kalimat Foundation has delivered inclusive literacy programs in 31 nations. She played a pivotal role in the UAE's accession to the Marrakesh Treaty, which ensures accessible books for persons with print disabilities. She also established the Emirates Publishers Association, the UAE Board on Books for Young People, and made history in 2020 by becoming the first Arab woman to serve as President of the International Publishers Association since its founding in 1896.
