Johnny Depp says he has empty-nest syndrome

The Advertiser6 hours ago

Johnny Depp has revealed he has empty-nest syndrome now his daughter and son are in their 20s.
The 62-year-old actor - who has Lily-Rose, 25, and Jack, 22, with former partner Vanessa Paradis - misses the days his children were still young enough to call him "Papa".
"Years get away from us, don't they?... I'm of the empty-nest syndrome," he told the Sunday Times newspaper.
Asked if he misses having his kids around, he replied: "Oh man, my kids growing up in the south of France in their youth?
"I was Papa. I cannot tell you how much I loved being Papa. Then, suddenly, Papa was out the window. I was Dad. But Papa was awesome and I'm getting old enough for Papa to possibly come back. Some motherf***er's going to have to call me Papa!"
The Pirates of the Caribbean star is currently living in London, but admitted the only place that has ever really felt like home was France.
"Well, I don't spend much time in the US. So there is the joint in the Bahamas or here. But home. Truly, the first time I felt I had a home was the place in the south of France where Vanessa and I raised the kiddies. That's the only place that ever felt like home."
Although Lily-Rose is a successful actor in her own right, Depp would never have wanted her to follow in his footsteps.
"Sometimes kids say to me, 'I want to be an actor, what's your advice?' And I say, 'Don't be!' I know what's coming for them," he said.
"I was chucked on that road and the only advice that I can give is, 'Don't allow anyone to make you something you are not.' They'll want you to be a poster boy and it's tempting - a lot of money. And if that's the direction you want? Go for it. But don't let anybody choose for you."
The Black Mass actor has never felt comfortable with fame and rarely even goes out with his friends because he doesn't want to bring unwanted attention their way.
"Well, to this day I just rarely go out. If friends invite me out for Mexican, I say, 'Dude, that's sweet of you but I will ruin your night.'
"My presence will bring attention and, Jesus, I have had almost 40 years of fame but I'm still not used to it. And I'm glad I'm not."

Melissa Barrera doesn't want to be restricted to horror parts

Melissa Barrera wants to "stretch" herself as an actress. The 34-year-old star has established herself as a scream queen with roles in movies such as Scream, Abigail and Your Monster but is determined to take parts in a range of genres on the big screen. Melissa told The Seeds podcast: "I love horror. It's super fun. And there's so many great horror scripts. "I also have never liked putting myself in a box of any kind, and I know that I have a lot other skills that... I want to showcase, and I want to like play with. So, I feel like I would get bored – I do get bored easily if I'm doing the same thing or the same genre." The Mexican actress believes that her background has meant that she had to work harder to be cast in certain roles during her career. Melissa – who was dropped from her role as Sam Carpenter in the Scream franchise in 2023 after making controversial comments about the war in Gaza – said: "You kind of have to fight for more room. "People (are) not necessarily looking for people that look like you for a role, but you got to kind of try and... knock on the door and be like, 'Hey, I know you're not looking for me. But like, maybe, would you mind? I'll just do it, and if you like it, maybe.'" Barrera revealed that she was desperate to land a role in the 2022 picture Scream as she knew that it would provide other Latino stars with opportunities as her character in the flick had a family. The In the Heights star said: "The big reason that I wanted to get that role so badly was because I knew that this character was going to have the family, and that if I got a role, then that meant more opportunities for other Latinos in the other roles. So that's the kind of thing that you think about." Melissa previously revealed that she felt as if her life "was over" after she was axed from Scream after work offers dried up for "around 10 months" afterwards. She told The Independent: "It was the darkest and hardest year of my life, and I had to re-evaluate everything. "There were times where I felt like my life was over." Barrera continued: "It was quiet for, like, 10 months. I was still getting offers for small things here and there – I'm not going to lie and say there was nothing – but [the message] was, like, 'Oh, she probably doesn't have work, she'll say yes to anything.' "I would get [roles] that I wasn't excited about, and I've never been a person that just wants to work for work's sake. I give so much of myself to acting that if a part of me feels like it's not worth it, I'm gonna be miserable. "Inside I'm constantly freaking out."

Perth teen's crazy outfit results in Katy Perry stage time

An Armadale teen's bizarre decision to dress as an orange 'sandwich board' inspired by Katy Perry's 2022 Menu Log commercial has resulted in an unforgettable moment on stage with the pop star. After turning 16 on Friday, Archie Richards used Perry's Sunday night RAC Arena show as the setting for his birthday party. Summoned to the stage by the performer alongside several other fans in eye-catching outfits, the teen was encouraged to rap a few famous lines from the advert — and even took some snaps with the star he's admired for more than 10 years. Archie Richards has fun on stage with Katy Perry. Credit: Archie Richards 'You always manifest it, but you don't actually think it's going to happen to you,' he told PerthNow. 'It just didn't feel real.' Asked how the Roar singer reacted to his obscure outfit choice, Mr Richards believes he caught her slightly off guard. 'I think she was a bit taken aback. It's not every day you see a teenage boy dressed up in a Menu Log sandwich board,' he joked. Each moment of his performance was caught on camera by his 'ecstatic' friend, with the audience lapping up the youngster's energy. However, his unforgettable experience almost didn't happen. The teen said that his one-of-a-kind outfit was a last-minute DIY job, initially planning to attend as a 'firework' before a change of heart. 'I thought, 'What if I just paint (the cardboard) orange and stick some glitter in the shape of Menu Log on it?',' he recalled. 'I made it the day of the concert in about two hours, so I'm pretty proud of it.' Perry played a mix of her classic hits, such as Dark Horse and Roar, as well as recent hits from her 2024 album titled 143. The 40-year-old's famous husband, actor Orlando Bloom, and her daughter Daisy have accompanied the star in Perth. With Mr Richards part of the next-generation of Perry fans, the teen showed his age when asked how he felt about the Pirates of the Caribbean star's presence in town. 'To be completely honest, I don't know who Orlando Bloom is,' he said. The excited fan said he would be attending the singer's second show in Perth on Monday night, and vowed to 'outfit repeat' after success the first time. 'Same costume, but I'm sitting a lot closer so she'll definitely see me,' he said.
