PTI protests outside ECP over ‘stolen mandate'

Express Tribune03-05-2025

On the call of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, a major protest was held outside the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) office in Peshawar.
Organized by PTI, the demonstration drew a large crowd, including party workers and members of the provincial assembly. In anticipation of the protest, authorities cordoned off the ECP office with barbed wire and deployed a heavy police contingent to maintain order.
Chanting slogans in support of Imran Khan, PTI supporters demanded the immediate release of their party's founder and other detained members.
Addressing the protestors, PTI Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa President Junaid Akbar, Special Assistant to the K-P Department of Population Welfare Malik Liaqat Ali Khan, MNA Atif Khan, and other party leaders alleged that national institutions were undermining the public mandate.
'The power and privileges of institutions exist because of the people; therefore, they must respect the public's vote,' speakers emphasized.
Junaid Akbar said PTI workers stood ready to mobilize at Adiala Jail or D-Chowk whenever Imran Khan gives the call.
He accused institutions of eliminating political space for PTI and unjustly labeling its peaceful workers as terrorists.
'We are here today to bring shame to the shameless,' he declared, branding the ECP as the 'Corruption Commission' and a 'guardian of defectors.'
Condemning PTI's targeting in the foreign funding case, the leaders questioned why financial scrutiny of other political parties remained pending.
They claimed that peaceful protests were taking place nationwide to reclaim what they described as a 'stolen mandate.'
The speakers denounced Imran Khan's imprisonment as unjust and demanded his immediate release, calling him the nation's hope and a symbol of democratic struggle.
They vowed that the fight for democracy, constitutional supremacy, and the rule of law would continue.
They called for legal action against returning officers allegedly involved in widespread rigging during the general elections.
'PTI candidates won by a clear majority, but the ECP, in collusion with others, manipulated the results to ensure their defeat,' they claimed, accusing returning officers of conspiring to alter outcomes deliberately. 'Such blatant rigging would even shame a dictator,' they said.
Criticizing the ECP's role, they accused it of announcing pre-written verdicts and disrespecting the people's vote.
'Those once demanding respect for the vote are now glorifying the boot,' they said. The speakers maintained that if electronic voting machines (EVMs) had been used, rigging would have been exposed within an hour.
They further alleged that the ECP, PML-N, and other institutions worked together to strip PTI of its rightful seats.
'Despite receiving the public's vote, PTI candidates were sidelined due to poor planning and open rigging. The seats were awarded to candidates from other parties,' they claimed.

PTI activists protest outside SHC, brave police brutality

During the hearing for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan's bail plea in the Al-Qadir Trust case, PTI leaders and workers staged a protest outside the Sindh High Court (SHC) under the leadership of PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh. The protesters demanded the release of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and other PTI leaders in custody, along with their acquittal in the false cases filed against them. During the peaceful demonstration, a police contingent attempted to arrest Haleem Adil Sheikh and other leaders. However, PTI lawyers intervened, and escorted Sheikh and the others into the court premises. Haleem Adil Sheikh stated, "our protest was peaceful, yet the police resorted to brutality and violence, which we will challenge in court. A civilian dictatorship has been established in Sindh, and martial law has been imposed across the country." Sheikh further said that Imran Khan has remained falsely imprisoned for over 600 days, stating, "the 26th Constitutional Amendment has resulted in a massacre of justice, and the judiciary has been weakened." Regarding the Al-Qadir Trust case, Sheikh asserted that Imran Khan is not a beneficiary and has committed no corruption, and instead "the real corruption was committed by Asif Ali Zardari and others, who purchased flats in London using stolen money, with the Sharif family as the beneficiaries. Imran Khan, on the other hand, established Al-Qadir University for religious education."

During the hearing, Barrister Salman Safdar, representing the Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi argued that the petitions for suspension of the sentence were heard, after much prayers and supplications, adding that today's date has not been given easily. NAB Prosecutor Rafay Maqsood appeared before the court and said that his request is that the federal government had to appoint a special prosecutor in this case but he has not been appointed yet. Rafay prayed the court to grant four week, stating that they had received the notice yesterday. The acting chief justice said for issuing notification for the prosecution team seven days are enough. Salman Safdar contended that more than 300 cases have been filed against the founder of PTI and the trial court sentenced him. In this matter, founder PTI Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi approached the IHC seeking suspension of their sentences in the £190 million case. Selection of CEC chief, ECP members: PTI nominates members for parliamentary body

ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday formally nominated its members for the parliamentary committee tasked with selecting the new chief election commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). In a statement on X, the opposition leader in National Assembly Omar Ayub posted a June 2 letter addressed to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, in which PTI nominated four National Assembly members and two senators for the committee. The nominees include MNAs Asad Qaiser, Gohar Ali Khan, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Latif Khosa, along with senators Shibli Faraz and Allama Raja Nasir. The move comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited the opposition leader for consultations on appointing a new CEC, following the expiration of the terms of the current CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja and two ECP members from Sindh and Balochistan on January 26, 2025. The premier's letter highlighted that despite their terms ending, the incumbents have continued to perform duties under Article 215 of the Constitution. According to Article 213 of the Constitution, the prime minister and opposition leader must send three names for each position to the president by mutual consensus. If no consensus is reached, names are submitted to a 12-member parliamentary committee equally representing the treasury and opposition benches, which then recommends a name to the president. The PTI's nominations follow procedural consultations within the party and were announced a day after the prime minister's invitation for dialogue with the opposition. The nominations are part of the constitutionally mandated process under Article 213(2B) for appointing the CEC and members from Sindh and Balochistan. The appointments are pending amid deep political polarisation in the country, with little prior engagement reported between government and opposition leaders on the matter. PTI had earlier filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in March, challenging the delay in appointing a new CEC. The petition named the federal government, Senate chairman, National Assembly speaker, and ECP as respondents, alleging constitutional violations due to the delay. It requested the court to compel relevant authorities to form the parliamentary committee and hold meaningful consultations under Article 213. Meanwhile, two other ECP members from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continue their terms until 2027, ensuring partial continuity within the commission. The selection process remains critical as the ECP is responsible for overseeing the transparency and conduct of elections in Pakistan. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
