Stunning Buninyong home hits market

Herald Sun7 days ago
Ballantrae, a gothic revival homestead built in 1857, is set on five acres just outside the rural township of Buninyong, near Ballarat.
Despite its nearly two-century-long age, the 7208 Midland Highway home has only ever had four owners.
'The family that built the house went bankrupt building the house, and so they only owned the house for two years.
'The next family owned the house for 140 years, then the family we bought it off, owned the house for about 40 years,' the vendor says.

The vendors stumbled across the home by accident when viewing a vacant lot next door.
'We were going to build a new house on that lot, but it had flooding issues, so the owner invited me to his house to have a discussion, and on arrival, we got talking about his house, which he thought maybe I should buy that instead,' the vendor says.
'On seeing it for the first time without even going inside, I agreed to buy the house. It has so much character and hasn't been touched for nearly 40 years.'
The vendor says his experience as a builder not only allowed him to see the potential, but it also assisted during the renovation process, which included painting, retiling, and rewiring.
'In principle, we left the bones of the house and made it more modern with our style, but certainly kept the history and heritage of the house,' the vendor says.
These renovations created a sophisticated blend of period features, including open fireplaces, a wine cellar, and the home's striking facade and modern comfort, including high-end appliances and fixtures.
Based at the foot of Mount Buninyong, the home also encompasses its natural surroundings.
'The rear of the house faces north, so we have tried to make all the rooms at the rear of the house have a view of the park, as I call it, to the rear of the property,' says the vendor.
'This includes the kitchen, meals area, a deck, and a bathroom, where you can sit in the bath and open the windows, and really feel part of nature. The park is a very private space, so you feel part of it in all of these rooms.'
Outside, the property features expansive grounds and shedding, allowing opportunity for a hobby farm or space simply to enjoy.
'There are five heritage-listed trees on the property, so just to walk around the garden at dusk, it's beautiful,' says the vendor.
'We often go for a quiet walk after dinner and just enjoy the energy of the trees; they are quite magnificent. Recently, we rebuilt a small dam/pond, and seeing the ducks returning to the property is rewarding.'
Buxton Ballarat's Mark Nunn has the home listed for sale with a $2.45m-$2.65m asking price via private treaty.

Victoria's green energy build almost doubles in price

Victorian Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio insists the higher energy bill prices resulting from a near doubling of the cost of connecting the state's renewable energy zones will pay off in the long run, even as experts question the plausibility of the calculations. The Victorian Transmission Plan, released on Sunday, revealed the price of future energy infrastructure costs had blown out to almost $8 billion – close to double what was slated in a 2024 draft.

Socialist wildly claims there is ‘no need' for the housing market

Victorian Socialists' Jordan Van Den Lamb joined Sky News host Freya Leach to analyse the great housing debate raging through the country. 'It's pretty clear your main concern is how people would make profit instead of, oh, it is a way to stop 10,000 people experiencing homelessness every month in Australia,' Mr Van Den Lamb told Sky News host Freya Leach. 'Yeah, we just do not need markets for human need … if a market is an efficient way of distributing something, then why do we have more than 100,000 empty properties in the Melbourne metropolitan area alone, while we have 30,000 approximately in the entire state of Victoria experiencing homelessness.'

Potter, who rode 1309 winners, called time on his 25-year career as a jockey in July, teaming up with Jolly, a Group 1-winning trainer who has 966 winners in his own right. A $6000 bargain buy at the 2023 Inglis Gold Yearling Sale, Nextonixs ($10 Sportsbet) has already repaid that fee in spades, winning three races from five starts, and $95,680 in prizemoney. â€' (@Racing) January 24, 2025 • Superstar v apprentice: J-Mac staves off Siena in Rosehill slugfest 'We bought her cheaply as a yearling, we probably just liked her pedigree a little bit,' Jolly said post-race. 'She's very fast, she's had one failure, here during the summer, she jarred up a little bit leading into it. 'Justin (Potter) said a couple of weeks ago, 'she's flying this thing', Streetcar Fury is a fast horse but we've had to take him away from her, because he hasn't been able to keep up with her (at trackwork). 'I was very confident leading into today that she was going well. She's a cantankerous little thing, very sassy, she's very hard work on the ground but a good ride.' • Maher colt comes out on top in Vain battle Jolly believes a race down the hill at Oakbank will suit the four-year-old, but also has a Victorian assignment in his cross hairs. 'I'd love to take her to Moonee Valley for a Friday night, she's got a very high cruising speed and a kick,' he said. It was an afternoon of mixed emotions for Murray Bridge trainers Ron Daniel and Trish Stanbury, the pair saluted with promising mare Hot Strut in a Class 2 over 1400m, but will anxiously await scans for stakes winner, Colmar, who pulled up lame after finishing sixth as favourite in a Benchmark 72 (1250m). 'It's pretty upsetting, we come here thinking it was a really good race for him today leading into the Balak Cup (Sep 10),' Daniel said. 'Rochelle (Milnes) said he was travelling OK then felt a bit funny. He pulled up, he was definitely sore, his nearside fetlock is pretty big.' Milnes, Jason Holder and Jake Toeroek shared riding honours on Saturday's nine-race program, the three premiership-winning hoops nailed a double each. It was also a landmark day for trainer Tyler Donaldson-Aitken, the Ballarat handler nailed his first metro winner with Welcometotheshow, who charged home to win the final race on the card, a 0-62 Handicap over 1250m.
