The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off their annual Girls Flag Football season this weekend.

What started as a club sport in Southwestern Pennsylvania has now grown to include over 50 high schools.
'Girls have been playing football and flag football for years and years. It's been in communities but it's never been official; they've never been able to put on their school jersey, whether it's a high school or college jersey. Now, they have that opportunity to compete,' said Senior Manager of Alumni Relations and Youth Football Mike Marchinsky.
The Steelers have contributed more than $250,000 to develop Girls Flag Football in Western Pennsylvania. The money helps pay for uniforms, travel, coaches and athletic trainers.
Giant Eagle, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Spread Group have also helped make games happen on Saturday.

Russell Wilson #3 and Justin Fields #2 of the Pittsburgh Steelers look on as head coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers #8 of the New York Jets embrace after the game at Acrisure Stadium on October 20, 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. MoreThe wait is finally over as four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers has signed on to become the next starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rodgers comes over after a relatively unsuccessful stint with the New York Jets, but this time around, the former Super Bowl champion is joining a franchise that has a long history of winning football games. Even at the age of 41, Rodgers is still one of the brightest minds in the game and should still possess the arm strength to be effective in the league. Mike Tomlin is one of the very best head coaches in the NFL, and the hope is that he can maximize every bit of talent Rodgers still has to offer. The deal is for one year and $13.6 million, and the future first ballot Hall of Fame quarterback is set to wear number 8 this upcoming season. Another injury for Anthony Richardson has soured his prospects as the Indianapolis Colts' starting quarterback though some are already projecting a new place for him with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Another injury for Anthony Richardson has soured his prospects as the Indianapolis Colts' starting quarterback though some are already projecting a new place for him with the Pittsburgh Steelers. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers finally made the worst kept secret in football an official matter of business this week when the veteran quarterback signed with the team. Pittsburgh had one of the more questionable quarterback situations in the AFC before the deal that now provides at least some temporary stability. Advertisement Temporary is the key word here because the Steelers have struggled to settle on a bona fide franchise centerpiece since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. Rogers takes the reins this time for 2025 but the Steelers again failed in that conquest this offseason. Rodgers will be gone after this season, leaving the Steelers in the same predicament. A better quarterback class projected in next year's draft could point them in the right direction. However, one analyst believes their next franchise quarterback may already be in the league. ESPN's Kevin Clark urged last week on "NFL Live" that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson could be in play when the Steelers are forced into another quarterback decision a year from now. 'I've never seen anybody more destined to be in the 2026 Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback competition than Anthony Richardson, because I'm looking at this and I'm seeing a training camp where Daniel Jones will probably start with the ones... He's going to get a good start somewhere else.' Clark's belief comes under the premise that the Colts are not willing to wait on him to put the pieces together. Injuries have plagued his young career and another shoulder injury has befallen him this offseason. Advertisement If Daniel Jones proves capable, it's likely the Colts ride the hot hand and look for on off ramp on Richardson. However, the Steelers should not be the team ready to provide it. The Steelers need-long term stability under center. Richardson's track record to this point screams the opposite. While he has a fascinating collection of physical gifts, he is no generational quarterback talent and the injuries worsen his case. Pittsburgh's addition of Rodgers and Tomlin's own history of coaching winning teams puts their positioning for a future quarterback in question as it pertains to next year's draft. Anthony Richardson And The SteelersBy Tony Fisher However, sitting and selecting a rookie play caller or moving up the draft board would appear the far better option for the franchise's future than continuing this cycle of deploying quarterbacks with major baggage. Pittsburgh Steelers Wanted $84 Million Quarterback Over Aaron Rodgers
Pittsburgh Steelers Wanted $84 Million Quarterback Over Aaron Rodgers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers finally agreed to a pact last week after months of back-and-forth. The Steelers finally have their quarterback for 2025, but turns out, despite the long offseason drama, Rodgers wasn't the first or even second choice for Pittsburgh. Advertisement ESPN's Adam Schefter laid out the Steelers' game plan from this offseason, and Rodgers was not at the top of the list. "This was the best move that the Pittsburgh Steelers could make right now," Schefter said on ESPN's "Get Up." "But let's also remember that this was the third option for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They were in on Matthew Stafford and couldn't get done a trade. They tried to re-sign Justin Fields. He opted to go to the New York Jets where he will meet Aaron Rodgers on opening day, and after they couldn't get a trade done for Stafford and couldn't get Fields re-signed, they pivoted to Aaron Rodgers." The Steelers had their eyes on a different Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Matthew Stafford. Stafford is entering the first year of a two-year, $84 million contract in Los Angeles. Stafford led the Rams to a Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, completing 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns. In his storied 16-year NFL career, Stafford has completed 5,174 passes for 59,809 yards and 377 touchdowns. Stafford is top-10 all time in completions, yards and touchdowns. Advertisement Stafford threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns, completing 65.8 percent of his passes in 2024. It's not clear the Rams would have entertained a Stafford trade. Schefter's report does indicate at the very least talks were had, but nothing could get done. At 41, Rodgers is even more past his prime than the 37-year old Stafford. Rodgers is coming off of a 5-12 campaign with the New York Jets, where he threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns. Rodgers comes with a lot more controversy than Stafford. Rodgers has been a headline machine over the past few years, especially after his tumultuous Jets' tenure. It's clear the Steelers wanted to grab a veteran stop-gap for 2025. Pittsburgh drafted Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL draft. Whether or not Howard is the quarterback of the future remains to be seen, but Rodgers probably doesn't have much time left in the NFL.
