Nick Saban daughter refutes rumor of Alabama football legend's return to coaching
Days after rumors swept across SEC media days that Nick Saban, the former Alabama football coach who led the Crimson Tide to six national championships, was considering a return to the sideline, Kristen Saban posted a video on her Instagram story of her father leading the Crimson Tide onto the field.
Hours later, she posted a selfie with a caption clarifying her previous post.
"Apparently some of y'all feel trolled by my last story of Nick's walkout," she wrote. "He's not coming back to coaching, hate to break it to you. You had your time."
Current Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer addressed the rumor July 16 by saying Nick Saban can do what he wants to do.
"He's one of the greatest to ever do it," DeBoer said. "So he's earned the right to do what he wants. I think the best part of what coach Saban is doing right now is he's still involved in the game. He's growing the game."
Nick Saban's coaching rumor started when Greg McElroy, a former Alabama quarterback who is a college football analyst, told WJOX radio that a very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around, and just really, really admire -- they seem to think Nick Saban is not done coaching." Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin echoed the prediction later saying "I don't think he's done."
Nick Saban spent his first season of retirement as an analyst on ESPN's "College GameDay."

MLB trade deadline: Pitcher Seth Lugo reportedly reaches 2-year, $46 million extension with Royals
Seth Lugo, one of baseball's most underrated pitchers, is sticking around Kansas City after all. The Royals reached a two-year, $46 million guaranteed contract extension with Lugo on Sunday, according to multiple reports. While Lugo was widely considered one of the top trade candidates ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, he'll instead be in Kansas City for years to come. Lugo was under contract until the end of this season with a salary of $15 million. Between his success and the Royals' struggles, Lugo loomed as one of the trade deadline's biggest prizes, so long as the club was willing to deal him. His career has flourished since joining Kansas City, as he finished as the runner-up for the AL Cy Young Award last season behind Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. As a soft-throwing right-hander who doesn't strike out many batters and sees most of his balls in play go in the air, Lugo is hardly anyone's vision of an ace. However, his seemingly bottomless arsenal of pitches keeps batters off-balance enough to post quality starts on a regular basis. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The Royals hold a 52-54 record heading into Monday's matchup with the Atlanta Braves, which has them sitting third in the AL Central. Lugo is set to take the mound Tuesday in the second game of that three-game series. Baseball Savant identifies an incredible 10 pitches that Lugo has used this season: four-seam fastball, curveball, sinker, cutter, changeup, slurve, slider, slow curve, sweeper and splitter. Pitch identification isn't an exact science, but all that goes to show how many looks Lugo can present on any given pitch. And he's a Gold Glover to boot. The results speak for themselves. No pitcher in the American League faced more batters last season than Lugo, and he's on pace to post a similarly strong season this year with the Royals. A lot of advanced stats don't love the 35-year-old's chances of continuing his success, but there are always players who overperform their peripherals. A player with Lugo's approach could easily be one of them. What to make of this extension? Lugo's extension feels like a win-win for both the pitcher and the Royals. Since arriving in Kansas City last season, the Royals' right-hander has been one of the best starting pitchers in the American League. The Royals' key to success has always been starting pitching first; don't expect that to change in 2026. Lugo, who could've opted out at the end of 2025 and re-entered free agency, instead gets the raise he was going to get on the market. And Kansas City keeps the most consistent starter in its rotation around for two more years, with the hope of better success in 2026. In terms of the trade deadline, Lugo's extension takes one of the top starting pitchers off the board and means that teams that were looking to add, particularly with rentals, will need to go back to the drawing board. — Dorsey

Wings' Paige Bueckers to a ref: 'Do you need my glasses?'
Paige Bueckers wasn't available to play on Sunday, a bummer for the Dallas Wings. It did set up one of the funniest moments of their matchup with the Las Vegas Aces, though. After one call went against Dallas, the broadcast cameras focused in on Bueckers. On this day, in casual clothes on the bench, Bueckers was rocking some glasses. And so, she stood up, took a few steps toward an official, and asked, "Do you need my glasses?" Sometimes, that feels like it might be a fair question. That was the high point of the day for the Wings, who lost by 26 to Vegas without Bueckers. They'll just be hoping she can be back soon, because as fun as her referee interactions are when she's not on the court, Bueckers is much more fun in the game. 'Bend It Like Beckham' sequel in the works more than 20 years after the original
'I'm pretty certain that everyone's going to want to come back," director Gurinder Chadha said. Goal! Gurinder Chadha is working on a prequel to Bend It Like Beckham, the 2003 sports cult classic about a young Indian woman (Parminder Nagra) whose dreams of playing pro soccer clash with her strict immigrant parents' ideals. In the comedy, Nagra starred as Jess Bhamra, a teenager who goes against her parents' wishes and competes in matches in secret once she's enlisted by fellow player Jules Paxton (Keira Knightley) for a semi-pro team. Jonathan Rhys Meyers also starred as Jess' coach, Joe, whom she takes a liking to. Stars Nagra and Knightley, as well as Archie Panjabi (who played Pinky) and Juliet Stevenson (Paula), are "aware that a sequel is being developed," Chadha told Deadline, but "want to see a script before they commit." "I'm pretty certain that everyone's going to want to come back," Chadha said. "Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc." No plot details yet, but Chadha intends to once again co-write the screenplay with husband Paul Mayeda Berges. She also collaborated with Emma Hayes, head coach of the U.S. women's national soccer team, to help shape the script. The goal is a 2027 release to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the film's U.K. 2002 premiere. The original film, its title a nod to none other than former soccer player David Beckham, was a box office hit, grossing $76.6 million against a budget of roughly $6 million. It even inspired a 2015 West End production. 'I think people underestimated the power of girls wanting to see films where they were empowered,' Chadha told Entertainment Weekly of the film's enduring success in a retrospective in 2018 ,alongside stars Nagra and Panjabi. 'Those hardly ever existed.'"People love a story about an underdog," Nagra added. "Billy Elliot did it. Rocky. Somebody who has to struggle and is going up against everybody else's version of what they think that person should be. And I think that's what resonates with people: If you put the hard work in and the persistence, eventually it'll pay off." Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
