Panthers beat reporter offers up surprise challenger for team's WR competition

USA Today18-07-2025
For the first time in a long time, the Carolina Panthers have themselves a good depth problem at the wideout position. In fact, one of the most overlooked names on the depth chart even has a real chance of making the initial 53-man roster at the end of the summer.
Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer joined WFNZ's Will Palaszczuk on Thursday's episode of The Kyle Bailey Show. When talking about the Panthers' crowded receiver room, Kaye brought up a dark-horse candidate who has a shot at rounding out the group—"Dirty" Dan Chisena.
"Realistically, they're probably gonna keep six [wide receivers]. If they keep seven, I think the seventh guy's Chisena . . . just for his special teams ability," Kaye stated. "You lost Feleipe Franks, you lost Lonnie Johnson, you lost Sam Franklin. David Moore and Dan Chisena are guys that are glue dudes who are also really good on special teams, and you need to make up for those losses as well."
Chisena, who is set to enter his sixth NFL campaign, appeared in six games for the Panthers in 2024. 81 of his 100 total snaps came on special teams—where he recorded a pair of tackles in return coverage.
Returning to the squad for 2025, however, may not be easy for the 28-year-old veteran.
Carolina has four locks—or near-locks—in 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan, 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette, two-time Pro Bowler Adam Thielen and Jalen Coker. Moore, 2025 sixth-rounder Jimmy Horn Jr. and Hunter Renfrow, who missed the 2024 season due to ulcerative colitis, will also challenge for the backend of the bunch.
But, as Kaye notes, the Panthers will have to patch up their major departures on special teams—and head coach Dave Canales really values special teams.
"I think it's gonna be very difficult," Canales said last month of choosing between wideouts. "I think that we're gonna have to take it through the preseason games, and see who can help us. And special teams is gonna be such a huge piece of that puzzle. How can these guys help us in the coverage units? Can they help us as a returner? Those things, that added value—if it's even the special teamer—makes the team.
"So that's the part where we get to challenge our guys. Find a role, take this thing seriously. You're not here just to catch passes. We only get so many helmets on game day, so we need all of you. We need you guys to contribute in different ways.'
Canales and the Panthers kept seven receivers on their initial 53-man roster last season.
Players are scheduled to get back to Charlotte for the start of training camp next week, beginning with rookie arrivals on Monday.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce honors the franchise's winning culture as motivation

During Wednesday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce shared his motivation for another season, mainly due to the franchise's winning culture and talented staff. "I've been lucky to be here, what is it, my 13th year now? I absolutely love this organization," said Kelce, "I love the team. I love all the coaches I know, just about every defensive coach as well as all the offensive coaches, and vice versa, with the players and the staff in the equipment room, I have fun coming into work every single day. What better way to get better than to make sure that we lean on each other? And if I can give somebody a word that makes them better on that specific router, doing that specific drill, man, I'm here for it." Kelce enters the 2025 season behind Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten for third all-time in tight end yards. He is only 896 yards behind Witten for second place. "I think that gives me more juice than, you know, than anything else. It is the fact that, you know, we have created this culture," said Kelce, "We have created this machine that you know, when you do it the right way, it works, and you get to win football games because of it. And I think that alone kind of gives you the excitement that what we're doing here is special." The 35-year-old ten-time Pro Bowler posted 823 yards with three touchdowns on 97 receptions in 2024.

Video Of NFL Star Jaycee Horn's Car Crash Has Emerged

Video Of NFL Star Jaycee Horn's Car Crash Has Emerged originally appeared on The Spun. The Carolina Panthers had to practice without star cornerback Jaycee Horn this Wednesday. That's because he was involved in a car accident. Although the accident isn't expected to keep Horn off the field for long, he will miss the team's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns. The coaching staff revealed that Horn is dealing with a left thumb injury. "I'm glad that Jaycee was OK," Panthers head coach Dave Canales said. "He did have to have a few stitches in his left thumb area. So they got that all cleaned up and sutured up. ... It doesn't seem like anything else happened, but you know we're just gonna kind of evaluate him each day." Horn went on social media to reassure fans that he's doing fine. The South Carolina product wrote, "I'm straight ! Nun major thank god." On Wednesday night, footage of the alleged accident involving Horn surfaced on Instagram. The video that's going viral appears to show a Mercedes-Maybach SUV crashing into a pickup truck in Charlotte. Check it out: Horn, the No. 8 pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, has racked up 153 total tackles, 26 pass break-ups and five interceptions since going pro. The Panthers signed Horn to a four–year, $100 million extension earlier this offseason. His deal included $46 million. Suffice to say, Carolina wants its $100 million cornerback on the field for Week 1. Worrying Isaah Yeo detail emerges as Penrith's NRL finals charge hits major hurdle

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary admits he's not sure when Isaah Yeo will return for the Panthers as mystery surrounds the shoulder injury he suffered in last week's golden point win over Gold Coast. The Panthers trainer controversy has dominated the headlines this week, but the injury to Penrith's co-captain is also concerning for the club and their chances of securing a top-four finish. Yeo was in obvious discomfort after landing awkwardly on his shoulder in the first half of the Titans game. While he was able to play on and featured for most of the second half, Yeo was unable to finish the game and is set to miss Friday night's round 23 showdown at Newcastle, where the Panthers will be looking to extend their NRL winning streak to nine games. Isaiah Papali'i has been named to wear the No.13 jersey in the absence of Yeo, who has been an almost ever-present for the four-time reigning premiers over the course of their NRL dynasty. Since the start of the club's historic run in 2020, Yeo has only missed 16 games for the club and 14 of those have come around Origin time - whether playing for the Blues or being rested after games for his state. The only other two games Yeo has missed for Penrith over that period were due to head knocks in 2020 and 2022. And it poses a major question around how the Panthers will handle the absence of their inspirational co-captain and what effect it could have on their run home, after Penrith's coach admitted he's not sure when Yeo will return. Isaah Yeo will go for scans on a right shoulder injury that the Panthers hope isn't too suggests main concern is shoulder instability (subluxation/dislocation) - mechanism landing on outstretched just a subluxation considering ability to play through… — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) August 3, 2025 Penrith unsure when injured skipper Isaah Yeo will return "Clearly there's been a little bit of a concern with his shoulder," coach Cleary said. "We'll just give him as much time as he needs, and we're very confident he'll be back." The Penrith coach revealed this week that Yeo had not completely dislocated his right shoulder. RELATED: Dragons set to sign QLD Origin player as former coach lands new gig Calls for NRL rule change after second Panthers trainer incident Eels rocked as third player from grand final team 'requests release' But he conceded the timeframe on his co-captain's return remains a mystery and couldn't say whether Yeo would have been fit enough to play this weekend, had it been a grand final. "We don't know," the Penrith coach responded to a question about Yeo's likely return date. "It was a sublux, so it didn't come right out. They all vary. The fact that he can keep playing is a really good sign. Obviously he pulled up a little sore at halftime and then after the game. He won't be playing this week, and we'll just take it as it comes and see how he goes." Penrith have jumped up to fifth on the ladder - one point behind the Warriors - off the back of their eight-game winning streak. But they face a tricky run home after Friday night's game against Newcastle, with clashes against top-three sides Melbourne, Canberra and the Bulldogs, followed by an away game against the Dragons to close out the season. Yeo's absence for any of those games will make Penrith's quest for a top-four finish that much harder. And the fact that no team has won an NRL premiership finishing outside the four in the current finals format, highlights how important it will be for the Panthers to have Yeo back on the park. "Yeoy he is a massive integral part of our side ... To fill his shoes it is going to be a bit of a joint venture," prop Lindsay Smith said about the skipper. "There are definitely a couple of us boys in the middle that need to take a step up. "You can't replicate Yeoy and you can't replicate his leadership and calmness on the field. But everyone can chip in there in their own department to fill that void as a whole ... When he's been out, we've been able to do that in games." with AAP
