The world-renowned sweet Philippine mangoes has officially reached Rome, Italy!
With the collaborative efforts of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Italy (PCCI) and the Philippine Embassy in Rome — led by H.E. Ambassador Nathaniel Imperial and Agricultural Attaché Josyline Javelosa, the first commercial export of Philippine mangoes to Italy has landed and is now being sold in Filipino stores in the city.
On Monday, June 2, PCCI officials and members, together with Ambassador Imperial and Agricultural Attaché Javelosa, celebrated this milestone at Pinoy Saver's Mart Battistini, one of the official distributors of Philippine mangoes in Rome.
The historic shipment weighed nearly half a ton and marks the beginning of what stakeholders hope will be a long-term presence of Filipino agricultural products in Europe.
Ambassador Imperial said, 'This is only the beginning of a broad effort to lessen our country's wide trade deficit with Italy. We aim to export more fresh agricultural produce and processed foods to Italy where there is a growing market for Philippine-sourced food products.'
Representatives from Artigiani Imprenditori d'Italia (CNA) joined the event and expressed support for stronger agricultural trade ties between the Philippines and Italy.
Dennis Carrascoso, chairman of PCCI Italy and the key figure behind the initiative, shared the group's vision of promoting Filipino products not just in Italy, but across Europe.
'This project is the fruit of teamwork. With the financial support coordinated by Benford Fortuna of Sarap Restaurant and the documentation handled by Jocelyn Tupino of Pacific Cargo, we were able to turn this dream into reality,' Carrascoso said.
He added, 'On behalf of PCCI, we are truly grateful to the Philippine Embassy and to all our fellow Filipinos who supported — and continue to support — this initiative. This is just the beginning.'
This achievement is more than just a successful shipment — it is a proud symbol of the Philippines' agricultural excellence. It also opens doors for more opportunities for Filipino farmers, exporters, and entrepreneurs to compete in the global market.
The good news? More stores in Rome are now offering Philippine mangoes, including Mancini on the Go and Sarap Restaurant.
For Filipino farmers and agribusinesses back home, this is a clear message: our harvests are world-class, and the world is ready for more. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Marcos office seeking P1.018-B budget for local, foreign trips

The budget for President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr.'s local and foreign missions as well as state visits next year has been increased to more than P1 billion. According to the 2026 National Expenditure Program, the local or foreign missions and state visits were appropriated with P1,018,304,000. This was an increase from the P982,649,000 budget this year. Marcos' recent trip was his state visit to the Republic of India. Before that, he had an official visit to the United States to meet American counterpart Donald Trump. The Philippine leader also participated in the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in May. Early this year, Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said the foreign visits of Marcos had generated more than 200,000 jobs for Filipinos. He said power, renewable energy, and electronics manufacturing were the first sectors to create jobs. The entire proposed Office of the President budget for 2026 stands at P27.362 billion, which is higher than the P15.9 billion under this year's national budget. According to the Department of Budget and Management, the OP will get the highest confidential and intelligence funds allocation at P4.5 billion. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Diploma does not guarantee jobs, OJT needed —CHED chief

Half of the country's college graduates remain unemployed, a reality that Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairperson Dr. Shirley Agrupis said should serve as a wake-up call for schools, students, and policymakers. Speaking in a recent public forum, Agrupis stressed that a diploma alone does not guarantee a job. 'In the data of the 25,000 interviewed, only 3,000 were hired,' she said. "It's not because of the expertise in the field but because of the lack of soft skills, writing ability, communication skills, critical thinking.' She pointed to studies by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) and direct feedback from industries as key indicators of the mismatch between higher education output and labor market needs. To bridge this gap, CHED has issued a memorandum requiring all universities to integrate on-the-job training (OJT) into their degree programs. "We are compelled to deploy our students to an industry related to the degree program. After finishing the required number of hours, the OJT gives feedback to us,' she explained. The program serves two purposes: giving employers a chance to evaluate student competence and offering them an opportunity to demonstrate their skills. 'Most of them are employed after OJT,' Agrupis said. "But the diploma is not a guarantee for immediate employment. We always emphasize that," she said. Addressing questions about 'mass promotion' in basic education, the CHED chief clarified that while tertiary institutions use entrance exams to maintain academic standards, basic education promotion policies fall under the Department of Education (DepEd). She reiterated that improving higher education outcomes also depends on strong foundational skills from earlier schooling. 'We are teaching the same Filipino from preschool to college. At what stage can we implant the right values so they grow up knowing their responsibilities?' she asked. CHED continues to work with DepEd and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) under a 'tri-focalized' education framework to align curricula with both technical requirements and soft skills demanded by employers. 'This is how we progress — by shaping not just the mind, but the character of our youth,' she said. During the session, Agrupis outlined a sweeping reform blueprint for Philippine higher education, known as the new seven-point ACHIEVE Agenda, will be CHED's strategic guide from 2025 to 2030. Through this agenda, CHED aims to integrate flexible learning programs, harmonize research with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, create a unified data portal to track learners from elementary to employment, and strengthen global competitiveness through academic mobility and international collaborations. The session, organized by the SEAMEO Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO INNOTECH), is one of three SEAMEO regional centers hosted by the Government of the Philippines. Since its establishment in 1970, INNOTECH has continuously and effectively provided quality learning services, research and solutions development, knowledge management, as well as other enabling and support services, to effectively respond to educational needs and concerns in Southeast Asia.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
