Minister calls for urgent measures to prevent killing of wild animals and cattle in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar dist.

The Hindu03-07-2025
Animal Husbandry and Sericulture Minister and Chamarajanagar district in-charge Minister K. Venkatesh on Thursday directed Forest Department officials to take stringent and urgent preventive measures to ensure that wild animals and cattle are not killed in forest border areas and nearby villages.
In the wake of the recent deaths of five tigers by poisoning in the Hoogyam range of the M.M. Hills Wildlife Division, and the death of monkeys in the Kandagalu area of Gundlupet range, the Minister held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner and Forest officials in Hanur to gather information.
He was updated on the ongoing investigation being conducted by Central and State-level officials on the tiger deaths, and sought details on the current stage of the probe.
The Minister instructed officials to remain extra vigilant in protecting cattle in villages bordering forests, and take steps to prevent wild animals from straying into villages in search of food.
Under the MGNREGA scheme, fodder cultivation should be promoted and ponds constructed in villages near forests to benefit cattle, he said, emphasising that there should be no shortage of fodder or water for local livestock.
Patrolling in forest areas and adjoining villages must be intensified, including special night patrols, he directed. Deploying watchers and other forest staff under proper supervision will help prevent wildlife attacks, he advised.
'When wild animals attack cattle, forest officials must build confidence among farmers and villagers by consoling them and should respond immediately,' the Minister suggested.
The Minister stressed that it is the responsibility of the Forest Department to ensure timely payment of salaries to outsourced staff in the M.M. Wildlife Division. 'This issue should be brought to the notice of higher authorities without any delay and resolved at the earliest,' he instructed.
The Minister assured that steps would be taken to get necessary grants sanctioned to provide protection and basic facilities for wildlife, people, and livestock in forest fringe areas.
MLA M.R. Manjunath, CADA Chairman P. Mariswamy, former MLA R. Narendra, Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag, and other officials were present.

Police resort to lathicharge, fire teargas shells as tribals' protest against power project turns violent, 300 booked

Police allegedly resorted to lathicharge and lobbed 19 teargas shells on protesting tribals, who pelted stones and were obstructing the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) officials for a spot visit of the proposed Pumped Storage Project in Songadh taluka of Tapi district on Tuesday. A police inspector I D Desai and Sub Inspector P M Chaudhary sustained minor injuries in the stone-pelting and they were discharged after treatment at a private hospital on Tuesday, police said. According to sources in GSECL, the PSP project was proposed on the forest department land in various villages including Serula, Old Kulivel, Satkashi, Old Amalpada, Old and Bavli. On Tuesday, the GSECL officials of Tapi district, accompanied by the Forest department officials, district administrative officials and over 40 police personnel, reached Old Kulivel village for a spot visit. 'A large number of people armed with wooden sticks and stones gathered at Old Kulivel village and stopped us from going to the PSP project site. The police official tried to explain to them that it is an official procedure. They (tribals) said they don't want the project in their village. The villagers stopped the officials from moving ahead and gheraoed them. They pelted stones at police, who in turn resorted to lathi-charge and lobbed 19 teargas shells to disperse the mob. The situation turned tense and we left the spot without conducting the spot visit,' said Kirti Chaudhary, GSECL officer at Ukai, in the FIR filed with Songadh police station on Tuesday. 'Earlier on May 19 and May 20, we carried out an awareness meeting at Serula village wherein the villagers and sarpanches from Serula, Old Kulivel, Satkashi, Old Amalpada and Old Bavli were present. We explained to the villagers that the project is coming up on forest land and no private land or public land will be acquired. In the meeting, the locals and sarpanches objected to the project,' the FIR said. Songadh police have registered a case against over 300 people and identified six among them. The accused were booked under BNS section 126 (2) (offence of wrongful restraint), 189 (2,3,4, 5) (Unlawful assembly, armed with deadly weapons, disturbance of public peace), 190 (criminal liability of individuals who are part of an unlawful assembly), 192 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 221 (offence of obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their public functions). The six accused are identified as Ganesh Vasava, Kishan Vasava, Shailesh Vasava, Ishwar Vasava, Nilesh Vasava and Yusuf Gamit, all residents of different villages in Songadh taluka. Talking to the Indian Express, Tapi district Superintendent of Police Rahul Patel said police detained a few protesters to control the situation and that they were freed later. 'We have got the videos of the incident, and we have identified some of the leaders who incited the tribals. These leaders and those who pelted stones at the police will be arrested soon,' Patel said. Former Panchayat president and Congress leader Yusuf Gamit, named as one of the accused, said, 'The local tribals are against this project. The sarpanch and tribal leader don't want this project in their village. We will not allow this project to take place. Police had first pushed the tribal leaders, and the tribals got angered and pelted stones at them.' GSECL sources said that the PSP is an off-stream closed-loop project with an installed capacity of 300 MW/1854 MW. The project involves construction of upper and lower reservoirs, designed with gross storage capacities of 5.656 MCM (Million Cubic Meter) and 6.792 MCM, respectively. The upper reservoir will be 57 meters high and the lower reservoir 44 meters.

HC extends restraint on arrest of Vedan to Aug. 25

The Kerala High Court has extended to August 25 the restraint on arrest of Hirandas Murali, a Malayalam rapper popularly known as Vedan, who was recently charged with sexually assaulting a woman doctor multiple times on the promise of marriage. This was after the counsel for the doctor sought more time to submit details of personal chats between the doctor and Vedan. When her counsel submitted yet again that two other women also had raised similar allegations against the rapper, and sought that he be considered as a 'habitual offender', the court told her to argue within the confines of her client's case. It said that courts took decisions on the basis of evidence that was presented before them and that a criminal case cannot be registered on the charge of withdrawal from a promise of marriage. The government's counsel opposed the anticipatory bail plea, citing that Vedan had earlier been charged with narcotic cases, while the Forest department had filed a case against him for possession of a pendant made of suspected leopard tooth.

Elephant Crushes Chhattisgarh Man To Death, 6 ‘Wives' Turn Up To Claim Compensation

The six women and their children are claiming Salik Ram's compensation, insisting they are legitimate heirs. Reports say he married them at different times, each with 2-3 children In a bizarre twist following a tragic elephant attack in Chhattisgarh's Surguja division, the death of a man has sparked an unusual dispute over government compensation. While he was known to have one wife, six women have now come forward claiming to be his spouses, each seeking a share of the compensation. The tragic incident occurred in Balajhar Chimta Paani village, in Chhattisgarh's Pathalgaon forest range, claiming the life of Salik Ram Toppo. After his death, six women and their children came forward, each asserting they were his spouses and rightful heirs to the government compensation. This unusual situation has become a topic of widespread discussion in the village. Each of the six women, along with their children, are asserting their claims, insisting that they are the legitimate recipients of the compensation. It is reported that Salik Ram had spent time with these women, each having 2 to 3 children, and had married them at different times. Villagers are particularly astonished because, in his final days, Salik Ram lived with just one wife and his son, Bhagwat Toppo. The emergence of these six wives, who have now prepared Panchnama papers to stake their claims, has left the community in disbelief. The Forest Department has acknowledged the complexity of the situation. The children and sons-in-law of Salik Ram's former wives have also approached the office, demanding their share of compensation. However, the department has clarified that the further process will involve obtaining Panchayat consent and conducting a thorough investigation. The Forest Department has stated that only women who can present valid certificates proving their marriage to Salik Ram will receive the compensation. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
