They advocated:Greater interdisciplinary learning, combining core engineering with computer science, AI and sustainability.advertisementStronger academicindustry partnerships to ensure realworld relevance.Wider inclusivity to bring in students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds.WHY DIVERSITY OF SKILLS MATTERSFocusing solely on CSE risks neglecting crucial sectors where India must build global capacity—particularly semiconductors, batteries, chemicals and materials science. This could hamper the country's competitiveness in key future technologies. The panel's unanimous message was clear: while computer science has its place, India's future depends on nurturing engineers across all disciplines. Students and parents should choose based on passion and national needs—not just salaries.- Ends

TN launches initiative to bridge talent gap in semiconductor sector
The initiative will be carried out in partnership with IIT Madras and leading corporate partners in the semiconductor sector. 'This is part of CM M K Stalin's vision to leverage Tamil Nadu's highly educated workforce to build a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem,' said Industries Minister T R B Rajaa. 'Our goal is to make Tamil Nadu the singular, indispensable source of semiconductor talent — nationally and globally.' The facility will train 4,500 students in two phases through specialised 2–6 week modules. In the first phase, 2,000 students will receive training in advanced semiconductor design and fabrication techniques, under schemes such as 'Naan Mudhalvan'. The curriculum will emphasise translational research and practical applications in areas such as electric mobility, data centres, and space technology. Six to seven key roles have been identified, ranging from technicians to fab managers. 'We will operationalise the centre at the earliest,' said IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti. The initiative will explore collaborating with the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as well. This talent push is a core component of the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Mission 2030, unveiled in the 2025–26 state budget.

Tamil Nadu launches ‘School of Semiconductor' initiative to build future workforce for country
In a pioneering move for India's technological landscape, the Tamil Nadu government is coming out with a 'School of Semiconductor' initiative . As the first intervention under this initiative to address workforce readiness, a Centre for Advanced Semiconductor Technologies — powered by a first-of-its-kind in situ semiconductor fab processing facility in India — has been conceptualised and driven by the Government of Tamil Nadu, in partnership with IIT Madras and leading corporate partners in the semiconductor sector. Tamil Nadu's Industries Minister said: 'With this initiative, our focus is on developing human capital in this sector and building a globally competitive semiconductor workforce in Tamil Nadu. From fabless design to equipment manufacturing, from R&D to startups, and from technician training to advanced engineering, we are creating opportunities for every layer of talent. Our vision is to make Tamil Nadu the singular, indispensable source of highly-skilled talent required for the booming semiconductor industry across the nation and the world.' The Minister also said that the department of Industries and the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation will work together on this. The Government of Tamil Nadu will support this initiative with an initial seed grant of Rs.100 crore. This facility will include a small-scale production-grade fab to jump-start local capability, drive advanced research, and support continuous skilling, localisation of technology, prototyping, productization, and incubation of startups. The initiative will also explore collaborating with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. The proposed centre will be located at the Central Polytechnic Campus in Chennai. The centre proposes to train over 4,500 candidates through specialised modules in a 2–6-week period. The facility will focus on translational research with practical application in priority sectors such as electric vehicles, data centres, and space technology. In addition, the government aims to promote semiconductor growth through workforce development across all levels (from technicians to managers), localisation of technology and manufacturing, prototyping and commercialising innovations, interdisciplinary R&D with strong industry collaboration, development of diamond-based advanced power electronic devices and support for semiconductor-focused startups.
